Changes to the In-App Scanner

Munzee is an app with many moving parts. From time to time, we evaluate those parts to see if they can be improved, or if costs can be reduced. The scanner solution that was used in the app to scan physical munzees up until today falls into the latter. Today, we’ve released an update to the Munzee app that now uses the QR Code scanning functionality that is native to your device.

Please note this will require updating your app in the Apple App or Google Play Stores. This is not an Over-The-Air (OTA) Update, it may take longer for the update to be available. If you don’t see it in the app stores yet, check back later!

If you run into any issues with this new scanner, please let us know at support@munzee.com. It would be helpful for us to know your device model (i.e. iPhone 7+, Samsung Galaxy Tab S) and OS (i.e. iOS 13.1.2, Android 7.1.1) as issues are often device- or OS-specific.

Additionally, this change also means that Version 3 of the app will no longer be able to scan physical munzees. With the release of 4.0 last year we wrote that we are no longer able to support updates to Version 3, but would permanently shut it down sometime in the future. For now, Version 3 will still remain live, but its days are numbered. If you haven’t already, please make the switch to the latest version of the app. There are a lot of improvements we’ve made that we think you’ll enjoy, including:

MHQ Petting Zoo Animals Have Escaped!

It wouldn’t be spring at MHQ without some cute baby animals, but instead of playing it safe with tried-and-true pastels, we added a more colorful, nostalgic twist! Unfortunately, it seems that someone at MHQ (*cough* Flat Rob *cough*) didn’t check if the pens were secure, so now the animals have run amok! Starting at 11:11 MHQ on April 9th, Baby Animal specials will begin bouncing around the map until 23:59 MHQ on April 30th.

Baby Animals Details

Players of our sister app, WallaBee, may recognize the art for these adorable bouncers! We chose these 5 animals based on 3 factors: cuteness, cuddliness, and charisma. We hope they can provide a little virtual snuggle for those of you who really need it during this unprecedented time. Can you collect them all?

500 of these specials (100 of each) will bounce to all all colors of Virtual Munzees, Electric Mysteries, Surprises, Onyxes, and Citrines every 1 hour or when captured. Each animal will be worth 150 points for Capture and 50 points for CapOn, so you don’t want to miss out!

These colorful cuties will be attracted to Virtual Magnets! However, they will not be blastable. To access these specials, please turn on your “All Expiring Specials” and “All Limited Edition Specials” filters.

Badges

Additionally, there will be five badges to earn based on the number of Baby Animals specials you capture. But just how many captures it takes to earn all 5 badges will be kept a secret! However, we will reveal the first badge in the line, which appears as follows:

Sweet Stickers- Capture 1 Baby Animal Special of any type.

One way we’ve been amusing ourselves at home is digging through our garages for old toys — does this post inspire you to search through your forgotten troves? We’d love to see any treasures you find — please post them in the comments of our social posts so we can all see!

We hope you’ll fall in love with these furry friends!

Munzee Mistakes: How to Munzee from Home!

Last year, we started the Munzee Mistakes series of blog posts using tips from our very helpful and knowledgeable players! As we thought we had done a good job of covering the basics, we started going into more specific territory with the last Munzee Mistakes post. This post is somewhat a return to the origins of Munzee Mistakes, as we’ll be covering the basics of munzee-ing from home. While the core of Munzee gameplay is to visit many locations to either capture or deploy munzees, there is a lot you can do without setting foot outside! Here are some tips from both players and staff that we hope you’ll find useful, quarantine or not!

We posted a call for tips from our players last Saturday, and have compiled them in the list below. Consider these tips while playing to avoid the most common Munzee mistakes! For more, you can see what everyone posted on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram!

Tip #1: Maximize the munzees you can capture from your house!

Keep proximity requirements in mind, and deploy a variety — both physical AND virtual munzees. You need to be within a certain distance to capture a munzee, and munzees must be deployed a certain distance from other munzees to prevent crowding. Both distances vary by munzee type, but most munzees can be captured from within 300 ft. Some munzee types can be captured from a much further distance — if you don’t know which, read on as specific munzee types are recommended in later tips!

Tip #2: Virtuals are made for at-home Munzeeing!

Deploy a few near your home as well to attract bouncers (and to magnetize if you want to ensure bouncers will land), or if you are feeling social, you can trade deploys with other players! Ask friends or other members of your clan! If you don’t know anyone to ask, there are Facebook Groups made specifically for the purpose of trading virtual deploys with other players — those would be a great place to start!

Tip #3: Did you know you can deploy virtuals from the Munzee website?

This allows you to be very precise as you can enter in a latitude and longitude before deploying!

Tip #4: Deploy in a virtual garden, or create a virtual garden near you!

Don’t think that gardens have to be as large as the ones featured in our GOTM posts — small gardens are just as sweet! If you want a new garden near you but you’re not confident in creating a design, there may be another player who’ll be willing to create one for you — again, Facebook Groups are your friend! Though we heard that Dale of Space Coast Geo Store might create a cookie cutter garden for you if you ask nicely!

Tip #5: Deploy virtual munzees thoughtfully!

If gardens aren’t really your thing but you still want a way to deploy virtual munzees thoughtfully, consider high traffic locations such as airports and tourist attractions (i.e. Disneyland, Las Vegas, etc.). Another factor to consider is future events — check the Munzee Calendar and deploy a temporary virtual or a regular virtual depending on how soon the event is going to take place. Definitely check any notes the host has left to find out if the event will be rescheduled or canceled, so you don’t waste a deploy!

Tip #6: Places Munzees make especially great trades!

You can capture them within a 1,000 ft radius and you can capture them once a day!

Tip #7: Deploy Treehouses and greenies near your home!

Paired with a Physical Magnet, you’ll be able to attract all sorts of bouncers! Your mailbox can be a great spot for this, as it will still be accessible to other Munzee players (one of our rules for Physical Munzees), but will be close enough for you to get to it first most of the time! If you don’t have a mailbox, just look for the nearest street sign! If you are on good terms with your neighbors, you can also ask them for permission to stick a munzee on their mailbox / other parts of their property that are prime sticker locations.

Tip #8: Be consistent in your Munzee play!

If you are an active player, you may notice more bouncers coming your way, without even using a magnet!

Tip #9: Swap certain virtual and physical munzee types for points!

If you need deploy points for Clan Wars, this is a great way to meet that quota without having to scout around for new locations. This swapping is currently only a feature on the Munzee Website, so it’s definitely stay-at-home friendly!

Tip #10: Join the Global QRantine Event!

Munzees deployed by the event account have been “upgraded” so that they can be captured from anywhere in the world — but they function exactly the same way as other munzees of the same types! Here’s one you can capture right now!

Do you have any tips to share? E-mail us at iloveyou@munzee.com! You can also check out our past blogs about 25 master tips, 20 capping tips, 20 deploy tips, and 10 tips for new players. For more tips, be sure to check the blog daily for updates!

A big thanks to all who shared tips, and if you’re a new player, welcome to the Munzee family! As you can see, this is an interactive community in which players help each other master the art of Munzee. We’ve also been updating the Munzee Help Manual, which will feature all of these tips and tricks as well as a comprehensive breakdown of many aspects of gameplay.

Prank Badges Are Here!

On Wednesday, we announced the debut of Sir Prize Wheel and teased that a new related badge line would be released later in the week. The wait is over! This retroactive line of Prank Badges launches today at 12:00 MHQ time!

We wanted to try something new this time and award badges not only for Captures and Deploys of munzees, but for CapOns as well! So this new line of six Prank badges will be based on overall points instead!

Overall activity on both Surprise Munzees and Sir Prize Wheel Munzees will count toward the first four badges, but the last two badges will only count Sir Prize Wheel points! As these badges are retroactive, you may have already met the requirements for some of them, and should see them on your account soon! If not, please wait a few days as our system catches up with awarding these new badges to everyone who has earned them, before contacting support.

We won’t spoil all of the Pranks, but you can check out the first badge in the line below:

Whoopee Cushion- Earn 1000 combined points from Surprise or Sir Prize Wheel Munzees.

For help earning these badges, always check your local areas, because you never know when a new munzee will be deployed around you. Deploy Surprise and Sir Prize Wheel Munzees around the world, especially for the CapOn rewards! You can shop both in the Freeze Tag Online Store HERE!

We hope you enjoy these new badges!

Happy hunting, and Munzee on!

This New Munzee Type is No Joke!

As we enter into our third week of self-quarantine / working from home we at MHQ have been racking our brains to think of more ways to make the game accessible for those who can’t be out and about. From our past surveys, we know that Prize Wheels are quite popular amongst our players, so we decided to introduce a new virtual munzee type inspired by them!

Say hello to the snazziest gameshow host around- Sir Prize Wheel!

We are happy to announce the Sir Prize Wheel Munzee is now available for purchase! In case the name wasn’t obvious enough this new virtual type works like a combination of Surprise and Prize Wheel Munzees. You can pick up 20 Sir Prize Wheel Munzees every 10 days from the Freeze Tag Online Store HERE.

Sir Prize Wheel Munzee Details

The Sir Prize Wheel joins the Gaming Munzees as a virtual type. Once the Sir Prize Wheel is captured, he will award you points and a prize either by adding items to your inventory (like Zeds!) OR scattering a special munzee type nearby, similar to how the current Air Mysteries work. Make sure to read the popup that appears after capturing this munzee carefully so you know what you got! The owner of the munzee also has a chance to receive prizes as part of the CapOn!

Capture Radius: 300 feet, not blastable

Updated addition: Proximity: 300 feet to any other SPW, 150 feet any other type of your own, 50 feet to any other munzee from different owner.

Deploy: 200 points

Capture: 100 points + Random prize

CapOn: 50 points + Random CapOn prize possible

To access the Sir Prize Wheel munzee, turn on your “Virtual – Gaming” filter. To access any scatters, turn on your “All Expiring Specials” filter. For more information on the Sir Prize Wheel Munzee, you can check out our Help Guide article.

As part of this launch we are also adding the Surprise Munzee to the Gaming category, so that is TWO new virtual gaming types! Due to these new types we’ve updated the clan requirements in the app and on the previous blog. The Surprise Munzee also has a new, lower price and you can purchase those HERE! You can also shop the entire Gaming Munzee collection HERE!

Badges

In honor of April Fools Day we will also be releasing a new line of badges in the next week or so! Stay tuned for more information, we promise it’s no joke!

MHQ Has No Shortage of Toilet Paper!

Last month, Flat Matt’s luck was put to the test and he seemed to come out unscathed, thanks to all of the unlucky 13’s you captured! But why is Flat Matt always getting the attention? This month, we think it’s time to show Flat Lou some love! Starting at 11:11 MHQ on March 31st, Lou Roll specials will begin bouncing around the map until 23:11 MHQ on April 13th.

Lou Roll Details

Before you think we’re unfairly poking fun at Louise, just know this was her idea! Flat Lou has been sponsored by a toilet paper company for her upcoming race. It may not be the most extravagant of sponsors, but she does get all the two-ply she wants!

401 of these specials will bounce to all Flat Lous and Virtual Colors every 4 hours or when captured. Each roll will be worth 140 points for Capture and 41 points for CapOn, so you don’t want to miss out!

These plush MOBs will be attracted to Virtual Magnets on Virtual Colors! However, they will not be blastable. To access these specials, please turn on your “All Expiring Specials” and “All Limited Edition Specials” filters.

Badges

Additionally, there will be four badges to earn based on the number of Lou Roll specials you capture. But just how many captures it takes to earn all 4 badges will be kept a secret! However, we will reveal the first badge in the line, which appears as follows:

Rare Roll-Capture 1 Lou Roll Special

Both Lou Rolls and loo rolls are in rare supply these days! We don’t suggest hoarding, but you might want to have a couple extra rolls around in case of a rainy day. Are there slang terms for “toilet paper” where you’re from? Please share in the comments of our social posts!

We hope these specials help to lighten your load, wherever you are!

ZeeOps- Operation: Lockdown (April 2020)

A few weeks ago, we announced that there would be no ZeeOps for the month of March. Like the rest of the world, ZeeOps HQ was caught off-guard by the spread of COVID-19. Agents were ordered to limit their time outdoors and prepare for remote assignments. But things never go as smoothly as we hope. Just as our March missions were ready to be released, a nasty new virus was detected in our computing systems, originating from a simple “Hello World” text file stored on an agent’s computer.

Luckily, Director Zee has successfully recovered thanks to all of your hard work in February and having the month of March off! Though he is a bit shaken from his recent experiences, he is ready to face this new threat and hopes he can rely on your support. While the order to limit your time outdoors is still in place, the staff at ZeeOps HQ have identified some core operations that you’ll be able to complete remotely to help identify the structure of this virtual virus and protect the currently uninfected files. Will you accept these missions?

April 2020 ZeeOps Operations are now live and you can begin planning your Missions to start on the following day. You will only have until April 30th at 23:59 MHQ to complete this month’s Operations. All four Operation types available for this month- the Basic Op (3 days), the Advanced Op (7 days), the Mega Op (10 days), and the Ultra Op (14 days)! We hope this gives you something to do while you’re staying safe at home!

You can plan your Operations at munzee.com/ops/ and purchase more ZeeCred in the Freeze Tag Online Store. Remember that if you hit a snag at any point in your Operation you can use the Mission Mulligan feature to keep going! This month features a variety of munzee types so be sure to stock up in the Freeze Tag Online Store.

By completing any Operation this month you’ll earn the “Operation: Lockdown” badge.

April 2020 Clan Wars Requirements

It’s almost April! You’ll find all the details to our clan requirements and rewards in the clan section of our app. This month WILL be different. It is possible that we could update clan requirements prior to April 3 and reserve the right to do so. The final requirements and rewards will be in the app, and will be updated here if anything changes before the 3rd. All of this is up in the air based on how situations continue to change worldwide based on COVID-19. UPDATED BELOW IN RED ON APRIL 1 at 12pm based on player feedback via our contact link and additional updates to the game and worldwide restrictions.

These requirements are written with lower goals, and therefore lower rewards, at all levels. Much of the lower levels this month can be completed from the comfort of your home, which may be required in your local area. Some clans may have to choose for the first time not to go for levels they have achieved in the past. Some players may have to choose to play in new clans, or not at all for upcoming months. We will continue to provide opportunities for ALL players to play Munzee their way, while also following our code of conduct.

If Clan Wars won’t work for you this month we hope you will join us for ZeeOps which will be announced on the 31st and begin April 1. April Badges

Since there is NO Level X this month, there will be a total of 5 badges available in April. The first badge will appear as follows:

Novice Newbies: April 2020- Reached Level 1 in April 2020 Clan Wars

Overall Clan Notes:

Please keep in mind Levels 4 & 5 are considered advanced gameplay and not recommended for brand new players. Be aware when allowing new players to join your clans.

Bouncer captures include any POB, MOB, or TOB (even the temporary POB)

Physical points include all Cap, Deploy, and CapOn for ALL Physical types.
Deploy points are for all types excluding Personals.

Total points include Cap, Deploy, and CapOn of all types.

Social and Personal will not count for Deploy requirements.
Social will not count for total Capture requirements.
Personal will not count for Physical points of any sort. It is not a true physical munzee.

For complete information regarding Clan Wars, access our Help Guide!

Hints for how to play during Stay Home orders:
Use the swap feature for brand new virtual deploys.
Using the app to Renovate a motel will also give you a Renovation capture which is not given for an online renovation and does count as part of daily capture activity.
Use the online map to deploy virtuals worldwide or find gardens to deploy in on social media groups.
Watch the online store for sales during the month to help meet your goals.
Use evolution reset credits to get new CapOn points from OLD deploys (they do NOT count as new deploys)

And finally, be responsible. If your local government, your health, or any circumstances require you to Stay Home – DO NOT participate. It is up to each of us to determine what is safe and what is allowed. This is a game and not worth risking your own live or the lives of others.
Munzee on, stay safe and Play Your Way!

Requirements and rewards found in app are the final word. Please report any issues to Munzee support.
Play at your own risk, within the laws of your local area.

April 2020’s Resolution Can Be Done From The Comfort of Your Home!

It’s almost April, and while many of us are confined to our homes, that doesn’t mean our fitness has to suffer! As we announced in our January Resolutions blog, we will be launching monthly Capture Streak Badges centered on a year of being active. Each month’s badge will be dedicated to practicing a different exercise. Similar to how our Super Streak badges operate, you will be awarded a badge if you capture at least one munzee* each day for the entire month. This month’s badge may be tricky to get, but we believe in you!

Each month’s badge will be themed around the particular resolution goal. For April we thought that popular aerobic exercises would be a good way to maintain fitness, indoors or out! Time to rock those colorful sweatbands, arm warmers, leg warmers, and leotards!

Why are aerobic exercises important?

Aerobic exercises get your blood pumping! Good circulation is important as it means nutrients from the food you eat, the beverages you drink, and the air you breathe are more quickly delivered to your entire body, especially the extremities.

Healthline points out that, compared to exercises such as those featured in last month’s Resolution, “You perform aerobic exercises for a sustained period of time,” and additionally, “The American Heart Association recommends 30 minutes or more of aerobic exercise five or more days each week. That can be broken up, though. For example, you can take three, 10-minute walks throughout the day.” The article goes on to recommend 10 aerobic exercises you can try, but here’s our own (edited and slightly Munzee-fied) version of that list:

  1. Jumping to reach those QR codes that tall players stuck on signs
  2. Circuit of:
    1. Sasquatch Yeti Squats
    2. Leprechaun Lunges
    3. Pegasus Pushups
    4. Dragon Dips
    5. Tuli Twist
  3. Running or jogging to the nearest bouncer
  4. Walking the loop of Greenies and Elementals around your house
  5. Swimming with Mermaids and Sirens
  6. Biking and blasting
  7. Picking up each piece of litter you see one by one and tossing it into a trash can (bonus points if you had to chase after several tiny square sticker backings that got blown away by the wind)
  8. Kickboxing other Munzee players so that you can be FTC
  9. ZEEumba
  10. Cutting sheet after sheet of Munzee stickers into individual pieces

Are you ready to break a sweat between scanning QR codes? Before you attempt any exercise, it’s always a good idea to consult your doctor**. Good luck and Munzee on!

* In order to encourage active gameplay we will not count Social Munzees for these capture streaks. If you know you’ll be in an area without munzees, plan ahead!

** MUNZEE IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY EXERCISE-RELATED INJURIES

Best Dressed Fall into Spring Events Contest Details!

With the first Fall into Spring events kicking off this weekend*, we can’t wait to see how players celebrate the change in season! Similar to last year’s 8zees Best Dressed Contest, the event host will choose a winner at each event based on best themed attire. Event attendees will have 2 of 3 outfit options:

  • if it’s Spring where the event is being held, consider dressing in a Spring-themed outfit, e.g. florals, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, etc.
  • likewise, if it’ll be Fall where the event is being held, consider dressing in a Fall-themed outfit, e.g. leaves, golden and jewel tones, in-season fruits and vegetables
  • if you’re game for a more challenging option, consider dressing as one of the Mythological Munzees, such as those that appear on the Fall into Spring Event Package badges, or take inspiration from our staff members below!

L to R: Mari, hunniees, and Tamara at Registration Night for MH-Boo Bash! Mari is dressed as a Rainbow Unicorn while Tamara is dressed as a Pegasus.

It’s the event hosts’ responsibility to decide which attendee will win the Best Dressed badge. In order to earn the special badge for winning this costume contest, the event host must submit an entry to our Google Form, which we will provide to each host. Unfortunately we will not be able to award any Best Dressed badges without a form submission, so be sure to get them in! You can see the artwork for the badge below!

Featuring another ethereal goddess, Trish, who is responsible for a lot of our event artwork! She and Louise are a dynamic Event Goddess duo!

We’ll share some of our favorite player outfits to the official Munzee social media pages throughout March and April, but the badge will not be awarded until after the events have wrapped up. Then we’ll add all of the winners to a gallery on the Munzee Blog to announce when the badge has been awarded!

Don’t forget there’s still time to purchase Fall into Spring Event Packages, but Trish’s diary is filling up so if you want custom artwork you better act fast! Remember that we’ve extended the period for Fall into Spring Events up to and including the month of May! For those hosting events in the coming weeks please remember to use caution and follow local guidelines in regards to health concerns.

We’ve got an exciting season ahead of us, so stay tuned!

Munzee on!

*Event safety is up to the host of each event. Please follow community COVID-19 guidelines.
