December 2020 GOTM Winners + The Future of POTM

This month was all about creating some Munzee Magic in the form of the Holiday Card Collectors Club and all the various Christmas Combat Specials!

We are now happy to announce the winners of the December Garden of the Month (GOTM), give a reminder for December Player of the Month (POTM), and let you know about our plans for the POTM program in the coming year! The badges for December GOTM and POTM will be awarded in early January, but we couldn’t wait to share the winners we’ve chosen!

December GOTM

As we’re now fully into Christmas/Holiday mode, the gardens we’ve chosen certainly make the map feel a little bit merrier! Remember that all winning GOTM organizers and all players who deployed in the winning gardens will be awarded special badges for their contribution to growing the map. This month we’re happy to award the Xmas Knole Deer Garden, designed by Maattmoo, and the Queensland Koala Garden, designed by BonnieB1, as our winning December GOTM! The gardens appear as follows:

Xmas Knole Deer by Maattmoo in Sevenoaks, United Kingdom

This garden looks like a slightly more grown-up version of our Baby Reindeer Christmas Critter!

Maattmoo shared his thoughts behind the design:

It started over a month ago when I found out about an event being held in the grounds of Knole Deer Park for Xmas and the event organiser was trying to build up the area a bit for the event.

I thought, wow what a great space for a new garden, so checked if they wanted to do a garden or if I would be able to do.
They agreed that I was free to do and it would be a great addition to the area and event.

So what design, well Knole Park is famous for its free roaming deer herds and being a Christmas event, a red nose deer felt like a perfect fit. Now over the last month with some social media persuasion and gentle coercion we have filled the garden complete and with a week to go to the event too.

The event Maattmoo wrote about was on the calendar HERE!

Queensland Koala by BonnieB1 in Queensland, Australia

We started the year with Aussie Animals, so we thought it would be a nice way to end the year too!

This garden was created for another event that took place on the same day as Maattmoo’s, but across the globe! You can find the A Queensland Christmas event on the calendar HERE!

All players who deployed in the respective winning gardens will receive the following special badges:

Rules for GOTM nominations:

  1. Garden must feature non-licensed character designs.
  2. The garden must feature a Garden Places Pin.
  3. The garden must be built using a publicly available spreadsheet which we will ask to be locked after being 100% deployed.
  4. We’re asking for ongoing nominations and we will release the winners throughout the year.

Send your nomination for GOTM to iloveyou@munzee.com! Keep in mind that we take all former nominations into consideration for upcoming months. Just be sure your garden follows the nomination rules in order to be considered eligible!

If you need help deploying in a Virtual Garden, you can check out this step-by-step tutorial that will making deploying in a garden easy no matter how long you’ve been playing. To fill in the gardens, make sure to stock up on Virtuals and Color Credits from the Freeze Tag Online Store.

December POTM

December’s POTM called for stories of Munzee acts of kindness. There’s still a bit of time left to earn this badge, so please send your stories to the Google Form at this link: https://forms.gle/JqF1LPaft6G6yeBAA

Thank you for sending in your stories! You can expect to see the badge in early January.

The Future of POTM

As the app has grown and changed we decided to re-evaluate the POTM program so it wouldn’t feel stale. So far, we’ve been alternating nomination-based months with requirement-based months. This was so that players could have fair and varied opportunities to earn the badges.

Our goal moving forward is still to feature and celebrate our players, but in a way that feels more organic and special. So although we will not be moving forward with the POTM program for the foreseeable future, we are still working out what new ways we can highlight our awesome players. Please look forward to more information in the coming months!

Event Spotlight: Raision syksy

While Munzee can certainly be a solo game if you choose, there’s no denying the appeal in meeting others who share your interests. Munzee Events are perhaps the best example of this, as they allow you to meet both old and new players in a safe, friendly environment. On top of that, there are usually activities, games, and — if you’re lucky — goodie bags! That being said, planning events requires a considerable amount of effort. So, to make it easier for prospective hosts (and maybe even recurring hosts), we decided to put the spotlight on past events, Munzee-Toolkit style! We hope this series of posts will inspire you to try hosting an event if you never have before, or provide you with ideas to spice up future events if you’re an old hand at it!

Today we’re featuring the Raision syksy event, which took place on November 6, 2020 at Raisio, Finland and was hosted by tcguru, RePe, and kilpertti.

Give us a brief summary about your event!

We have arranged normally four events every year in Turku, Finland, area. It’s not a very large area, but we have almost 50 more or less active players. Good locations for events have already all been used, these days we must think creatively. Neighbor cities and towns of Turku such as Kaarina, Lieto and Raisio are good for now, only they also are loaded with Munzees these days! Would be nice to find a location on which players could deploy for example Prize Wheel Munzees, but it has become more and more difficult. This was number 3 out of four events in Raisio this year, and was quite a success, we had over 40 visitors! The time of the event was obviously well chosen, it was on a Friday afternoon – early evening. Event #1 at the Easter time had a virtual garden (Chameleon), and this event #3 had another, smaller garden (Mushrooms). We are thankful to all players who have helped us with these gardens, Mushrooms is already full and Chameleon almost.

What tips do you have when hosting an awesome event?

Plan ahead, and try to find every time something new. The Chameleon garden had one feature I’ve never seen before: most of the virtuals there are of colors the deployers have chosen out of few alternatives, there was a dropdown on the spreadsheet for each consisting of the colors that were possible on that location. This way a real chameleon formed!

Also try to get some little more scarce game pieces on the event area if possible, for example now the greetings cards attached to the Holiday Card Collectors Club campaign are such. Prize Wheels and Sir Prize Wheel Munzees are favorites of many players, if you can deploy these on the event site many players are happy.

If you can get a visitor or two from out of town or even from another country / state, such players that are not normally seen in that area, then many local players would be pleased. This would mean for example Personal Munzees many have not scanned before, and it’s always nice talking to players you don’t see that often. Most players are really nice folks!

What made your event unique?

One of the hosts, RePe, came up with an idea of a badge design for all the events in this series of Raisio events. The Easter event was on spring time, then we had a summer event, this Halloween event in fall, and on Dec 5 we are having the final event, almost winter time here. All four seasons appear on the same image of a tree, and the badges are designed so that the current season is in all colors, while the other three are grayscale. This way a series of four badges is formed, which is visually very nice.  Another remarkable thing about this event was the huge amount of greeting card Munzees deployed on the area. It was awesome, we had never seen this kind of an amount in Finland before. Thank you everyone who deployed cards for this event!

Would you like to highlight any future events you’re hosting?

Raision joulu (#4 in the series of these 4) on Dec 5 on the same area.

Thank you to tcguru for being such a great host and submitting the details for this event! We will be reaching out to other past event hosts in the future, so keep an eye on your inbox!

Munzee Toolkit Thurzday: vmbiohazard

One of the best parts about Munzee is that you can play how you want. Everyone goes about playing a bit differently, and that leads to some very creative and innovative uses of objects. From containers to bags to maintenance, we always encounter something new when we meet players. We want to showcase your Munzee Toolkits to see how you play the game and possibly even inspire other players who may need help!

The week’s featured Munzee Toolkit comes to us from vmbiohazard, who hails from Pennsylvania. He started playing Munzee over 8 years ago, so we’re happy he’s stuck around for so long! He has even made the leap to co-hosting an event despite the current situation! Read on to discover his essentials and also find the link to his event!

vmbiohazard Toolkit

Hey all! I was first introduced to Munzee by my Uncle (HiTechMD). I go by the handle VMBiohazard. I started playing years ago when my uncle and I went Geocaching. I took a small break from both and then started playing again when COVID-19 hit. This got me out of the house and moving around. I have been going hard on Munzee ever since. I was fortunate enough to join the awesome clan that my Uncle is in, Surface Interval.

I live in South-Central Pennsylvania, work in Maryland, and vacation in New Jersey. My job allows me to travel quite a bit, so I additionally get to play all over. I will be co-hosting my first event in about a week in Maryland, and will be looking to host my own event come 2021 in Pennsylvania. So stay tuned for those of you nearby!

As for my kit, I keep a few things handy when I am driving around. First, I keep a neck gaiter mask around my neck at all times (thanks to COVID). I have a small multi-compartment fishing tackle case (link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07QWH7VC9/) with all my deployable physicals. I keep them all sorted and ready. Makes it nice in case I have to go on foot. I can just slide it right into my cargo pocket. I keep a phone charger in the truck, and also have a mobile battery pack to take with me when I am on foot. I also keep all my Munzee Coins and Personal Munzee Tag in the truck, in case I come across another player. Should it start getting dark, I keep a few flashlights in the truck ready to go. I also keep bottles of hand sanitizer in the truck to use after I do any type of physical deploy.

Cheers!

Share Your Kit!

If you have a Munzee Toolkit that you’d like to show off, you can email us at iloveyou@munzee.com with the subject “Munzee Toolkit.” Make sure to include:

  • Your username and where you are from.
  • A few high quality photos.
  • A list of what each item is and how you use it.
  • What made you decide to use those items.
  • Any other relevant details.

Please feel free to include as much information about your gameplay as you wish to share! We want to see your creativity and learn how you play, so show us what you’ve got! And for Munzee tips and tricks, you can always check out our Help Guide articles!

A big Munzee thank you to vmbiohazard for sharing his Munzee Toolkit! If you’ll be in Maryland anytime soon, consider attending his event! As you’ll see on the calendar page, the event hosts are taking care to keep everyone safe and healthy by following COVID-19 restrictions.

November 2020 GOTM Winners + December POTM Requirements!

This month has been a bit all over the place, but as it’s sandwiched between Halloween and Christmas, perhaps November was doomed from the start to be a strange transitional period.

For those looking forward to Christmas, we started off strong with the MunzPaks, which include the very popular Christmas Critters! We also featured a past Christmas Event in an amazingly detailed Event Spotlight by denali0407! Lastly, we released the Holiday Card Collectors Club, which seems to be well-received so far! We have some more things related to Christmas in the works, so be on the lookout!

For those who wish it was still Halloween, we released the popular Kill Them With Kindness Greeting Card and had a double points day to go along with it!

As for non-holiday related updates, we announced the results of our Zeecret Agent Competition, released 3 more nomads, and a much-requested new Places munzee, the Drink Depot!

We are now happy to announce the winners of the November Garden of the Month (GOTM), give a reminder for November Player of the Month (POTM), and announce the criteria for December POTM! The badges for November GOTM and POTM will be awarded in early December, but we couldn’t wait to share the winners we’ve chosen!

November GOTM

As mentioned above, we’re caught between Halloween and Christmas, so the first garden we chose reflects this split. The second garden was chosen as it looks like the perfect Christmas gift for a young child! Remember that all winning GOTM organizers and all players who deployed in the winning gardens will be awarded special badges for their contribution to growing the map. This month we’re happy to award the Claire’s Candy Canes Garden, designed by Jeffeth, and the Teddy Bear Garden, designed by CoalCracker7, as our winning November GOTM! The gardens will appear as follows:

Claire’s Candy Canes by Jeffeth in Ontario, Canada

We love the way Jeffeth expanded on the idea of Candy Cane gardens into other special days! Don’t forget that you can get a slightly larger Candy Cane garden deployed at your Christmas Event: https://munzeeblog.com/get-your-christmas-greetings-done-early-with-this-new-card/

Jeffeth shared his thoughts behind the design:

A garden made for my wife, who always enjoys getting into the Christmas spirit early. 🙂

It was designed specifically as a November garden. The first candy cane represents veterans day/remembrance day held in November, the second has a lot of orange in reminder of Halloween which just passed, and the third shows the original candy cane and Christmas that is coming.

Also, such a unique use of a variety of different munzees showing there are so many ways to make the same thing.

Teddy Bear Garden by CoalCracker7 in Gettysburg, PA

What an adorable way to celebrate the birth of a new baby!

This garden was created for this year’s Teddy Bear’s Picnic event! The tummy was colored blue to celebrate the birth of former staff member Daniel Hammock’s son.

December POTM Requirements

This month’s POTM requirement was suggested by a player, and we thought it would be a great fit for the season of giving. We want to hear about Munzee acts of kindness! For December Player Of The Month we want you to send in stories about times your faith in humanity was restored (or perhaps you were the restorer of faith to someone else!) while playing Munzee. We know our player community is full of great people, so we’re expecting to receive a lot of submissions! Munzee Toolkit MunzDay: Ulifredo

The week’s featured Munzee Toolkit comes to us from Ulifredo, who hails from Germany. With only 4 months of Munzee experience, Ulifredo has amassed more than 300,000 points, 200 badges, and 100 deploys. He’s also made some great progress towards the Capture Super Streak, as he’s managed to cap something every day from just a few days after he started! Ulifredo has a compact kit perfect for his preferred mode of transportation! Read on to learn more about this charming new player!

Ulifredo Toolkit

Hello! My Munzee name is Ulifredo, that was the name of my first cat. I am from Germany. I’ve only been playing for 3 months (at the time of writing — we received his submission in October), but I’m completely hooked!

Like many people in this country, I use the bike a lot. It is very convenient to quickly capture rare bouncers (before others :)), avoiding traffic jams. To orient myself while riding, I have that phone holder for the handlebar, where I visualize the Munzee map.

Since I need free hands, I carry that fanny pack (or belt pouch), which is very light and with enough capacity for all the things I need. These are:

  • A mask (in the flat back pocket). Maybe you do not need it if you go to a solitary area, but just in case.
  • Power bank. The cable has an extension to recharge the phone comfortably while riding.
  • Granola/cereal bars, in case you miss your lunch (or even your dinner). When you munzee, you know when you start, but you don’t know when you will finish…
  • A fine pen marker (0.4 mm) to repair damaged or faded-out munzees (sometimes it works!!)
  • Pads to clean lenses (in the small front pocket), they are useful to clean dirty stickers, or to clean surfaces when you deploy.
  • And of course some generics (also in the small front pocket) to QRew/ZeeQRew or simply because you never know when you are going to find a nice place to deploy.

Munzee Toolkit Thurzday: Jawillia

One of the best parts about Munzee is that you can play how you want. Everyone goes about playing a bit differently, and that leads to some very creative and innovative uses of objects. From containers to bags to maintenance, we always encounter something new when we meet players. We want to showcase your Munzee Toolkits to see how you play the game and possibly even inspire other players who may need help!

The week’s featured Munzee Toolkit comes to us from Jawillia, who hails from Niceville, FL. With over 4 years of Munzee experience, Jawillia has amassed over 6.5 million points thanks to her active gameplay. Despite having deployed over 1,000 munzees, Jawillia has created a simple toolkit that works well for her and her husband! Read on to discover their essentials!

Jawillia Toolkit

My Munzee name is Jawillia. The name has followed me from the earliest days of my IT career, when jobs were run via Punched Cards, and took days to get back. So that tells you I’m not young. Munzee is the best thing that happened to old age. It is the one hobby that you can continue to do past the point that your body says no to so many others. We have had to change how we Munzee, and especially in these days, but it is still one of my leading sources of fun.

Our Munzee toolkit is the same for each car. The bag was chosen because it holds readily uncut sheets of 25 micros, a pair of childrens pointed end scissors, a flashlight, and typically a few personal Munzees. We keep the different types of Munzees we plan to use sorted with plastic bags inside the case. It fits easily in the glove compartment, and then in my hubby’s pant’s pocket, or a jacket pocket when we’re away from the car.

A big Munzee thank you to Jawillia for sharing her Munzee Toolkit! Next time you’re in Florida, swing by Niceville and cap some of her munzees, or deploy some for her to cap!

Event Spotlight: Scrooged at Central Market

Earlier in the year we featured Primdahl’s Covid-19 Påske Special event, which had some great tips on how to plan and hold events in the current situation. Now that it’s been half a year since then, and the situation hasn’t really changed, we thought it would be a good idea to revisit those tips and also get some more! denali0407 has a wealth of information written for you here, so we greatly appreciate the time and effort she took to share! Also, don’t forget about the new Christmas Event Greeting Cards and Candy Cane Gardens we posted about last month, which might make setup a bit more convenient! And now, without further ado…

Today we’re featuring the Scrooged at Central Market event, which took place on December 6, 2018 at Fort Worth, TX and was hosted by denali0407, Roogles, Werewulf, and Brandikorte.

Give us a brief summary about your event!

“Scrooged at Central Market” was our Christmas 2018 event and featured one of my favorite badges ever (thanks, Trish!). Working within the madness of the Christmas season, this one was scheduled for a Thursday evening at a tried-and-true event site (where chocolate covered cherries can be found – and what event cannot be made better with chocolate covered cherries, I ask you?).

(Brief. You said brief, and I [mostly] delivered. Hallelujah!)

What tips do you have when hosting an awesome event?

Provide something for attendees to DO! Eventzee is ideal, especially when your clues tie into both the event site AND other attendees. Clues that entice players to interact with each other, and even to work together to figure out the necessary photos to stage, make it easy for people to get to better know their fellow players. Or to spend some silly time with the folks they already know and love. Either way works. The more outrageous the clues, the better the stories when people regroup!

Also provide fresh Munzees to cap. Virtual gardens work great, but it’s also a really good idea to blanket the area with physical Munzees when possible. If you place your event Munzees among the physical Munzees, the payoff for both attendees and deployers is even greater.

Plan early, when and if possible, and spread the word far and wide. Even tiny events can become the stuff of legend when you can manage to draw folks from all over the area. Catching up with seldom-seen faces is priceless. But those folks need advance notice, so do them a solid and give them an early heads-up.

Bear in mind the time of year and the likely weather you’ll face, and make necessary provisions. If it’s 7th level of hell hot, then water. And shade. And sunscreen. If it’s a blustery 42° (hey, that’s frigid for us here!), then move indoors. We typically like to have restaurants available, preferably with outside seating. (We liked to provide opportunities to social distance before it was The Thing To Do.) Corners and nooks and tables for two are an introvert’s dream. Adapt to the occasion and people will rise to that occasion!

What made your event unique?

This “Scrooged at Central Market” event all but created itself when a line from Dickens’ A Christmas Carol randomly came to mind: “If I could work my will, every idiot who goes around with ‘Merry Christmas’ on his lips, should be boiled with his own pudding, and buried with a stake of holly through his heart. He should!” From that, the badge was born, and everything else fell into place. Central Market is a grocery store with upstairs seating, outside seating, and Christmas displays galore. It seemed a natural fit for our needs.

This was one of our smaller events, which made it more intimate and cozy. We were able to use some of the time not just to socialize, but also to plan for some rather larger upcoming events in the area. Teamwork. It’s a beautiful thing.

We also tried something different that could really only work with a small event. Attendees were provided pen and paper and were asked to write down something they liked* about at least two of their fellow Munzeers (we were all fairly well familiar with each other, you see) and then surreptitiously, anonymously place it in the appropriate person’s candy dish (I say that like it was a thing of porcelain beauty – um, it was a red Solo cup) to find and digest later, with their sweets.

*All part of our ongoing efforts to, “Give me an occupation or I shall go mad!” (Bonus points to you, if you can name that movie.)

The Eventzee for Scrooged was particularly sublime (thanks to a brilliant co-host). It included various displays and items located throughout the event site and made for some interesting debate about loopholes, intent, and the spirit of the thing, post-event debriefing in the parking lot (the best events *do* have post-event chatter in the parking lot that goes on long after the venues close for the night, of course!)

I would be remiss if I did not mention that the weather for this particular event seemed sent from Scrooge himself: it stormed. Naturally. I say this because I feel I can never thank those folks enough who braved rush hour traffic in the pouring rain to get themselves to this event (hey, thanks again, guys!). [There. That should do it. Maybe?]

{You didn’t specify brief. This is all your fault.}

Would you like to highlight any future events you’re hosting?

We look forward to chatting loudly at each other from separate picnic tables and looking each other over to make sure we still appear to be (“appear,” being the key word) halfway sane(ish) after our long absence from this thing we used to know as a social life. On the plus side, who can tell we’ve aged 10 years in the last 8 months, when we’re 50′ apart? Silver linings, I tell ya. They’re a thing. A thing we aim to enjoy.

https://calendar.munzee.com/event1603381733/

This is our Ode to 2020, AKA the dumpster fire in which we are fully engaged at present. There will be the makings of an aptly designed garden for us to cap (feel free to deploy, and we’ll cap the tar out of them. Thanks!). We’ll also have at least a dozen physical event Munzees to cap. Think “little fires everywhere,” if you lean towards visualization. Who knew that 150′ proximity between event Munzees would one day be ideal? And to think we used to grumble. Now we respect what Munzee teaches us about distancing.

Attendees will be asked to kindly wear masks and if that doesn’t suit, then feel free to visit the site at any point during the week this event will be live. We will also have the usual hand sanitizers, spare masks, etc. for those folks willing to brave the presence of other (socially distanced) humans. The non-human kind need not be masked. Yes, dogs are welcome. Ferrets. Iguanas. Whatever comfort pet you’ve adopted during this siege. Bring ’em on. Show ’em off. Forgive us if we do not get close enough to pet. Maybe next time for that touchy, huggy thing we used to take for granted.

Meanwhile, attendees who take photos on the pink event indicator may just find themselves surprised by a little something post-event. Yes, we may just bribe – uh, *entice* – attendees to be social in different ways. Throw it out there, see what sticks, right?

Together we’ll figure out how to navigate these funky times in which we are a’livin’ and cap ourselves some Munzees along the way, yes? Yes!

Thank you to denali0407 for being such a great host and submitting the details for this event! We will be reaching out to other past event hosts in the future, so keep an eye on your inbox!
