2020 Yearly Leaderboard Badges!

At first glance, Munzee seems like a pretty simple game. Scan physical munzees to get points. Tap on virtual munzees to get even more points. There are different types of physical munzees and different types of virtual munzees that award you with varying numbers of points. Simple, right?

What’s not so simple is how to stay on top of all the numerous active players! While more established players do have an advantage in terms of deployed munzees (rake in those CapOn points!), they face difficulties in finding munzees to cap, especially if they are active in Clan Wars! Taking advantage of special points days, active Flat Friends days, and other strategies are necessary to maintain or improve their ranking.

We started this badge line last year to recognize the hard work (and play!) from those on top. After such a tough year, it only seemed fitting to celebrate those who came out on top despite the odds. We are happy to make this a tradition and recognize the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place on the overall yearly leaderboard for 2020! These accomplished players are, as follows:

  1. humbird7
  2. dt07751
  3. hunniees

Congratulations to humbird7 for taking home the top spot this time, and to the King and Queen of Munzee for successfully swapping their positions! You may recall that we gave them a shoutout just after Thanksgiving, for a slightly different achievement!

We hope this year will remain Munzee-filled for these three, and that everyone else reaches for the stars — after all, this could be you next year!

Garden Gnomes for Home Sweet Home!

Did our announcement on Christmas Eve put a Garden Gnome on your wishlist? Well, the wait is over, and we’re excited to introduce them to you now!

Garden Gnome Details

The Garden Gnome is a temporary POB that will remain on the map until 23:59 MHQ on December 31. It is currently available in the Freeze Tag Store for $12, and each month its price will decrease by $1. You can purchase 1 Garden Gnome every 28 days.

For the month of January ONLY, if you purchase a Garden Gnome, you will receive the Ice Hockey skin to upgrade your gnome for FREE. For the remaining months, you will need to earn skins by completing the previous month’s capture streak. You can change the skin on the gnome at any point (more info below!) as long as you have earned it.

Points

  • Garden Gnome
    • Deploy: 500
    • Capture: 250
    • CapOn: 150
  • Ice Hockey Garden Gnome
    • Capture: 250
    • CapOn: 300

You can find these kitschy cuties traveling to the following landing pads every 6 hours or when captured:

Additionally, when a Garden Gnome has an upgraded skin, up to 3 NEW Gnome Hats may be scattered nearby when it is captured! For instance, when a Garden Gnome has an Ice Hockey skin it might scatter Gnome Hockey Helmets nearby.

The Gnome Hats will be visible to any player and will be deployed on the Gnome owner’s account. This means that unlike Feathers/Boulders, there are CapOn points for the owner! They expire after 120 minutes and have a capture radius of 300 feet. These hat scatters will NOT count for deploy streaks, ZeeOps, or clan activity since they are passive deploys.

The rewards for Gnome Hats are as follows:

  • Capture: 50 points
  • CapOn: 50 points

Garden Gnomes of ANY type will be available for multi-capture. That means players can capture Garden Gnomes on their own munzees, any previously captured munzees, and more than once if the same Garden Gnome visits you. Garden Gnomes are non-blastable. They will be attracted to both Physical Magnets and Virtual Magnets. You can access Garden Gnomes by turning on your “All Limited Edition Specials” and “All Expiring Specials” filters.

How to Change A Gnome’s Skin

You’ll be able to change a Garden Gnome’s skin in the app AND on the Munzee website!

In the app:

  1. Navigate to the Munzee Details of the Gnome you would like to change the skin of
  2. Tap on the […] button in the top-right corner
  3. Tap [Convert]
  4. Tap on your desired skin
  5. Confirm that you would like to use that skin in the following popup
  6. That’s it!

On the website:

  1. Click [Convert] on the Gnome you would like to change the skin of
  2. Tap on your desired skin
  3. Confirm that you would like to use that skin in the following popup
  4. That’s it!

NOTE: Changing your Gnome’s skin will remove the Gnome from the map and force it to bounce again, so if you don’t want to ‘nudge’ your Gnome, you should wait to convert it.
It’s also important to know that you ARE able to change your Gnome as many times as you like.

Badges

Garden Gnomes have 4 associated badge lines:

  • Unique type deploy badges — you’ll need to earn each month’s skin by keeping your streak up! NOTE: for January, we’re doing things a little differently since we aren’t using your December 2020 days of activity, but make sure to keep your streak up throughout January so you can unlock February’s skin!
  • Overall deploy badges — the more gnomes you deploy, the merrier!
  • Unique type capture badges — capture at least 1 of each skinned gnome!
  • Overall capture badges — capture as many gnomes as you can find!

You can see the first of each badge line below:

If you complete the capture streaks for each month (and make the initial purchase in January) you’ll have 12 different skins to choose from! So be sure to purchase one each month so you can have a complete bench of these athletic Garden Gnomes!

We hope these gnomes are the perfect finishing touch to your outdoor decor!

Egyptian Zodiacs

The Egyptian Zodiacs will work similarly to the Western and Chinese Zodiacs in that they will be worth double points when capped and deployed during specific times. Instead of being worth double points during certain days of the week or monthly periods, their time periods vary according to the Egyptian annual cycle (00:01-23:59 MHQ time).

  • Nile: January 1 – 7, June 19 – 28, September 1 – 7, November 18 – 26
  • Amon-Ra: January 8 – 21, February 1 – 11
  • Osiris: March 1 – 10, November 27 – December 18
  • Thoth: April 1 – 19, November 8 – 17
  • Horus: April 20 – May 7, August 12 – 19
  • Seth: May 28 – June 18, September 28 – October 2
  • Anubis: May 8 – 27, June 29 – July 13
  • Sekhmet: July 29 – August 11, October 30 – November 7
  • Mut: January 22 – 31, September 8 – 22
  • Bastet: July 14 – 28, September 23 – 27, October 3 – 17
  • Geb: February 12 – 29, August 20 – 31
  • Isis: March 11 – 31, October 18 – 29, December 19 – 31

We are beginning with the Nile Egyptian Zodiac and will release a new Egyptian Zodiac every month through the Hybrid and Virtual MunzPak subscriptions. Each Egyptian Zodiac Munzee is worth 40 points for Deploy, Capture, and CapOn. Those numbers double to 80 points during each Zodiacs’ specific time period. NOTE: to receive double points on deploys, they MUST be done in the app!

Nile Egyptian Zodiac

Similar to the Cyborg Santa, when an Egyptian Zodiac is captured 1-3 NEW Artifacts will be scattered nearby!

The Artifacts will be visible to ALL players, not just the player who capped the Egyptian Zodiac, and will be deployed on the Egyptian Zodiac owner’s account. This means that unlike Feathers, there are CapOn points for the owner! These artifact scatters will NOT count for deploy streaks, ZeeOps, or clan activity since they are passive deploys.

The rewards for Artifacts are as follows:

  • Capture: 40
  • CapOn: 20

You will earn a badge for capping or deploying an Egyptian Zodiac Munzee. Here is the badge for the Nile Egyptian Zodiac:

We hope you enjoy these new virtual Zodiacs! Be sure to join the monthly subscription to save money from the one-time purchase option.

There’s Gnome Way You Wanna Miss out on This!

This year, we continued two traditions started in 2019: Monthly Streak Badges in the form of Exercise Resolutions, and a set of Monthly Rare Specials, in the form of 20/20 Vision Munzees. We also started a new tradition of Monthly POBs in the form of Funfinity Stones, which have become beloved characters in the game.

For 2021 we wanted to streamline things by linking all 3 together with a common theme!

Keeping this change in mind, we wanted to make sure we still incorporated the things that made each of them special.

  • For Monthly Streak Badges, it was all about staying healthy by maintaining good habits, just like maintaining your streak.
  • For Monthly Rare Specials, we wanted an ongoing collection that built up throughout the year centered around a central theme.
  • For Monthly POBs, we wanted a unified set of characters that felt like a family.

So what’s health-focused, fits within a central theme, and comes in a lot of varieties? Well garden gnomes playing sports obviously! 2020 was a slow year for sports and traveling (even the Olympic Games got pushed back!) so we’re sending garden gnomes on the road to compete for gold! We’re excited to announce Sporty Garden Gnomes are coming in 2021!

We’re not releasing all of the details just yet, but we did want to give everyone a heads up to start your capture streaks on January 1st!

Garden Gnomes

As usual you’ll want to capture at least one munzee* each day for the entire month to earn the reward. If you can make it through the whole month you’ll be awarded a badge and special item themed to that month’s activity! We’ll release more information on this special item and on how Monthly Rare Specials and Monthly POBs will be incorporated once we’re back in the office, but for now, here’s a sneak peek into what we have planned!

Please give a warm welcome to January’s Ice Hockey Gnome!

We know travel and sports are heavily limited right now, but we hope as you work towards this capture streak you can live vicariously through these charming gnomes! Perhaps you can find a way to watch or play your favorite sport** at home! We’re all in this together and if nothing else it will help you get one step closer to the yearlong capture and deploy streak badges. We’ll have a different gnome badge design each month, but try and keep up with your streak throughout the year! We believe in you!

We hope you’re excited to meet each month’s gnome and perhaps take home one of your own! Munzee on!

* In order to encourage active gameplay we will not count Social Munzees for these capture streaks. If you know you’ll be in an area without munzees plan ahead!

Event Spotlight: Raision syksy

While Munzee can certainly be a solo game if you choose, there’s no denying the appeal in meeting others who share your interests. Munzee Events are perhaps the best example of this, as they allow you to meet both old and new players in a safe, friendly environment. On top of that, there are usually activities, games, and — if you’re lucky — goodie bags! That being said, planning events requires a considerable amount of effort. So, to make it easier for prospective hosts (and maybe even recurring hosts), we decided to put the spotlight on past events, Munzee-Toolkit style! We hope this series of posts will inspire you to try hosting an event if you never have before, or provide you with ideas to spice up future events if you’re an old hand at it!

Today we’re featuring the Raision syksy event, which took place on November 6, 2020 at Raisio, Finland and was hosted by tcguru, RePe, and kilpertti.

Give us a brief summary about your event!

We have arranged normally four events every year in Turku, Finland, area. It’s not a very large area, but we have almost 50 more or less active players. Good locations for events have already all been used, these days we must think creatively. Neighbor cities and towns of Turku such as Kaarina, Lieto and Raisio are good for now, only they also are loaded with Munzees these days! Would be nice to find a location on which players could deploy for example Prize Wheel Munzees, but it has become more and more difficult. This was number 3 out of four events in Raisio this year, and was quite a success, we had over 40 visitors! The time of the event was obviously well chosen, it was on a Friday afternoon – early evening. Event #1 at the Easter time had a virtual garden (Chameleon), and this event #3 had another, smaller garden (Mushrooms). We are thankful to all players who have helped us with these gardens, Mushrooms is already full and Chameleon almost.

What tips do you have when hosting an awesome event?

Plan ahead, and try to find every time something new. The Chameleon garden had one feature I’ve never seen before: most of the virtuals there are of colors the deployers have chosen out of few alternatives, there was a dropdown on the spreadsheet for each consisting of the colors that were possible on that location. This way a real chameleon formed!

Also try to get some little more scarce game pieces on the event area if possible, for example now the greetings cards attached to the Holiday Card Collectors Club campaign are such. Prize Wheels and Sir Prize Wheel Munzees are favorites of many players, if you can deploy these on the event site many players are happy.

If you can get a visitor or two from out of town or even from another country / state, such players that are not normally seen in that area, then many local players would be pleased. This would mean for example Personal Munzees many have not scanned before, and it’s always nice talking to players you don’t see that often. Most players are really nice folks!

What made your event unique?

One of the hosts, RePe, came up with an idea of a badge design for all the events in this series of Raisio events. The Easter event was on spring time, then we had a summer event, this Halloween event in fall, and on Dec 5 we are having the final event, almost winter time here. All four seasons appear on the same image of a tree, and the badges are designed so that the current season is in all colors, while the other three are grayscale. This way a series of four badges is formed, which is visually very nice.  Another remarkable thing about this event was the huge amount of greeting card Munzees deployed on the area. It was awesome, we had never seen this kind of an amount in Finland before. Thank you everyone who deployed cards for this event!

Would you like to highlight any future events you’re hosting?

Raision joulu (#4 in the series of these 4) on Dec 5 on the same area.

Thank you to tcguru for being such a great host and submitting the details for this event! We will be reaching out to other past event hosts in the future, so keep an eye on your inbox!

At the Start of Any Physical Activity, Make Time For December 2020’s Resolution!

Ever woke up late and sprinted to school or work, making it just on time? Or saw a little kid fall into the deep end of a pool and dove quickly to save them? While the adrenaline pumping through your veins allows you to act in the moment, we bet you’ll be suffering from some soreness the next day! That’s why it’s important to devote some time to this month’s resolution, which will help you ease into your exercises and reduce discomfort.

As we announced in our January Resolutions blog, we will be launching monthly Capture Streak Badges centered on a year of being active. Each month’s badge will be dedicated to practicing a different exercise. Similar to how our Super Streak badges operate, you will be awarded a badge if you capture at least one munzee* each day for the entire month. This month’s badge may be tricky to get, but we believe in you!

Each month’s badge will be themed around the particular resolution goal. For December, we’re putting the focus on Dynamic Stretching! You may be thinking — the opposite of “dynamic” is “static”, so is there also “static stretching”? If so, what’s the difference? The answer is, yes, there is both “dynamic” and “static” stretching, and the difference is pretty intuitive. Keep reading to find out!

So what is dynamic stretching and what is static stretching?

Dynamic stretching is the kind of stretching you should be doing as a warm-up at the start of a workout or other physical activity. According to Healthline.com, “Dynamic stretches can be functional and mimic the movement of the activity or sport you’re about to perform. For example, a swimmer may circle their arms before getting into the water.” Similarly, in the badge art above, the runners are making sure to carefully bend and stretch their arms and legs in a way similar to how they would be while running. To reiterate, dynamic stretching is preparing your body for a lot of movement by “pre-moving” it and giving it time to adjust.

As for static stretching, the goal is not preparing your body for movement — quite the opposite, as you’ve probably guessed. You are stretching, and then holding that stretch. This might sound great for those who are lazy exercisers, but don’t think you can get away with doing static stretching alone. Static stretching is actually only recommended AFTER warming up your body. This is because the increased circulation reduces tension in your muscles, allowing you to stretch more easily and lessening the risk of pulling a muscle or otherwise straining yourself. Once you’ve warmed up though, static stretching is a great way to increase your flexibility and cool down.

Before you attempt any exercise, it’s always a good idea to consult your doctor**. Good luck and Munzee on!

* In order to encourage active gameplay we will not count Social Munzees for these capture streaks. If you know you’ll be in an area without munzees, plan ahead!

** MUNZEE IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY EXERCISE-RELATED INJURIES

Event Spotlight: Scrooged at Central Market

Earlier in the year we featured Primdahl’s Covid-19 Påske Special event, which had some great tips on how to plan and hold events in the current situation. Now that it’s been half a year since then, and the situation hasn’t really changed, we thought it would be a good idea to revisit those tips and also get some more! denali0407 has a wealth of information written for you here, so we greatly appreciate the time and effort she took to share! Also, don’t forget about the new Christmas Event Greeting Cards and Candy Cane Gardens we posted about last month, which might make setup a bit more convenient! And now, without further ado…

Today we’re featuring the Scrooged at Central Market event, which took place on December 6, 2018 at Fort Worth, TX and was hosted by denali0407, Roogles, Werewulf, and Brandikorte.

Give us a brief summary about your event!

“Scrooged at Central Market” was our Christmas 2018 event and featured one of my favorite badges ever (thanks, Trish!). Working within the madness of the Christmas season, this one was scheduled for a Thursday evening at a tried-and-true event site (where chocolate covered cherries can be found – and what event cannot be made better with chocolate covered cherries, I ask you?).

(Brief. You said brief, and I [mostly] delivered. Hallelujah!)

What tips do you have when hosting an awesome event?

Provide something for attendees to DO! Eventzee is ideal, especially when your clues tie into both the event site AND other attendees. Clues that entice players to interact with each other, and even to work together to figure out the necessary photos to stage, make it easy for people to get to better know their fellow players. Or to spend some silly time with the folks they already know and love. Either way works. The more outrageous the clues, the better the stories when people regroup!

Also provide fresh Munzees to cap. Virtual gardens work great, but it’s also a really good idea to blanket the area with physical Munzees when possible. If you place your event Munzees among the physical Munzees, the payoff for both attendees and deployers is even greater.

Plan early, when and if possible, and spread the word far and wide. Even tiny events can become the stuff of legend when you can manage to draw folks from all over the area. Catching up with seldom-seen faces is priceless. But those folks need advance notice, so do them a solid and give them an early heads-up.

Bear in mind the time of year and the likely weather you’ll face, and make necessary provisions. If it’s 7th level of hell hot, then water. And shade. And sunscreen. If it’s a blustery 42° (hey, that’s frigid for us here!), then move indoors. We typically like to have restaurants available, preferably with outside seating. (We liked to provide opportunities to social distance before it was The Thing To Do.) Corners and nooks and tables for two are an introvert’s dream. Adapt to the occasion and people will rise to that occasion!

What made your event unique?

This “Scrooged at Central Market” event all but created itself when a line from Dickens’ A Christmas Carol randomly came to mind: “If I could work my will, every idiot who goes around with ‘Merry Christmas’ on his lips, should be boiled with his own pudding, and buried with a stake of holly through his heart. He should!” From that, the badge was born, and everything else fell into place. Central Market is a grocery store with upstairs seating, outside seating, and Christmas displays galore. It seemed a natural fit for our needs.

This was one of our smaller events, which made it more intimate and cozy. We were able to use some of the time not just to socialize, but also to plan for some rather larger upcoming events in the area. Teamwork. It’s a beautiful thing.

We also tried something different that could really only work with a small event. Attendees were provided pen and paper and were asked to write down something they liked* about at least two of their fellow Munzeers (we were all fairly well familiar with each other, you see) and then surreptitiously, anonymously place it in the appropriate person’s candy dish (I say that like it was a thing of porcelain beauty – um, it was a red Solo cup) to find and digest later, with their sweets.

*All part of our ongoing efforts to, “Give me an occupation or I shall go mad!” (Bonus points to you, if you can name that movie.)

The Eventzee for Scrooged was particularly sublime (thanks to a brilliant co-host). It included various displays and items located throughout the event site and made for some interesting debate about loopholes, intent, and the spirit of the thing, post-event debriefing in the parking lot (the best events *do* have post-event chatter in the parking lot that goes on long after the venues close for the night, of course!)

I would be remiss if I did not mention that the weather for this particular event seemed sent from Scrooge himself: it stormed. Naturally. I say this because I feel I can never thank those folks enough who braved rush hour traffic in the pouring rain to get themselves to this event (hey, thanks again, guys!). [There. That should do it. Maybe?]

{You didn’t specify brief. This is all your fault.}

Would you like to highlight any future events you’re hosting?

We look forward to chatting loudly at each other from separate picnic tables and looking each other over to make sure we still appear to be (“appear,” being the key word) halfway sane(ish) after our long absence from this thing we used to know as a social life. On the plus side, who can tell we’ve aged 10 years in the last 8 months, when we’re 50′ apart? Silver linings, I tell ya. They’re a thing. A thing we aim to enjoy.

https://calendar.munzee.com/event1603381733/

This is our Ode to 2020, AKA the dumpster fire in which we are fully engaged at present. There will be the makings of an aptly designed garden for us to cap (feel free to deploy, and we’ll cap the tar out of them. Thanks!). We’ll also have at least a dozen physical event Munzees to cap. Think “little fires everywhere,” if you lean towards visualization. Who knew that 150′ proximity between event Munzees would one day be ideal? And to think we used to grumble. Now we respect what Munzee teaches us about distancing.

Attendees will be asked to kindly wear masks and if that doesn’t suit, then feel free to visit the site at any point during the week this event will be live. We will also have the usual hand sanitizers, spare masks, etc. for those folks willing to brave the presence of other (socially distanced) humans. The non-human kind need not be masked. Yes, dogs are welcome. Ferrets. Iguanas. Whatever comfort pet you’ve adopted during this siege. Bring ’em on. Show ’em off. Forgive us if we do not get close enough to pet. Maybe next time for that touchy, huggy thing we used to take for granted.

Meanwhile, attendees who take photos on the pink event indicator may just find themselves surprised by a little something post-event. Yes, we may just bribe – uh, *entice* – attendees to be social in different ways. Throw it out there, see what sticks, right?

Together we’ll figure out how to navigate these funky times in which we are a’livin’ and cap ourselves some Munzees along the way, yes? Yes!

Thank you to denali0407 for being such a great host and submitting the details for this event! We will be reaching out to other past event hosts in the future, so keep an eye on your inbox!

By Popular Demand, A New Places Munzee Has Emerged!

Back in May, we released 4 new Places Munzee types that were often requested by players. We thought that that would be enough to tide fans of Places Munzees over for the rest of the year. So, we were surprised to see that recently, there have been requests for a new type! We’re calling it the Drink Depot Places Munzee! It was added to the Freeze Tag store as of 12:00 MHQ today. Shop them HERE! They are limited to one per account per 30 days, like the other Places.

NEW Drink Depot Details

This new Places Munzee is all about the production of libations. Whether it’s a vineyard, a brewery, or a distillery we’re looking for unique locations that produce adult beverages (alcohol). We got the idea for this type from you, the players, so we’re confident they’ll be a welcome addition to the game. We can’t wait to see photos of beautiful grapevines, rustic machinery, and other interesting sights attached to these munzees. As with other Places munzees, these can be captured daily! They will also contribute progress towards the Places Capture badge line and the Places Streak badge line.

Capture Radius: 1,000 feet, not blastable

Deploy: 40 points

To access these munzees, turn on your “Virtual – Places” filters. For more information on how to deploy a Places munzee, you can check out our Help Guide article. This document will be updated with our guidelines should any changes occur. Please note that these new places should be easily identifiable from Google Maps.

Deploy Guidelines:

Remember a Places Munzee has to have its location approved for deployment, so please be sure to read through these guidelines carefully. It is also very helpful for you to update the name and notes of the Munzee so our reviewers can verify it quickly to get it deployed for you.

Drink Depot: This is for the places where alcoholic beverages are made… not every location where it’s consumed. Think vineyards, wineries, breweries, and distilleries, but not bars or restaurants!

Places Munzees are very unique due to the much larger cap radius (as compared with other munzee types) and aforementioned daily capture ability. As you can’t capture your own munzees, trade Places munzees with other players to make the most of your deploys!

Munzee on!
