Community Stories – Diabetes, Part 1

When we announced our Diabetes Awareness Charity Special, we asked you to share your stories of living with diabetes, and health in general, and how Munzee has helped you. We’ve gotten a handful of stories that we will be sharing, and we hope these encourage you to share yours. These stories have been edited to exclude personal information unless explicitly stated.

I have to write and tell you how this great game of Munzee helped me from contracting diabetes.

It all started a few years ago: I’m part of a team that creates treasure hunts to raise money for Breast Cancer Research. We were doing a hunt through Hollywood, and my task was to keep ahead of the contestant and make sure the clues were in place. Well, I just couldn’t keep up. When I got back home to the UK, I visited my Doctor, and after many tests, he diagnosed that I was suffering from Pre-Diabetes. In fact, I was very close to developing the disease full blown.

After a while that included a serious diet and much more exercise, I lost about 35 pounds, and was told that my new regime was for life. Well, I used to go letter boxing over here on Dartmoor, but was getting fed up with the wet weather and the need to dress for it. So, I started walking round the town.

It was all pretty boring until a friend of mine (a cacher) said the word Munzee. I had never heard it before, but did a google search.

From that moment on I was hooked. I bought myself an iPhone, and my walks were never the same again. I’ve kept my weight off, and more importantly my blood sugar level has remained in limits.

When the next person wins a silver eagle in the Cancer treasure hunt, I shall be heading to the USA once more. This time, the hunt is in Miami, so I shall take time out and pop across to McKinney, hopefully to meet up with you munzee guys. That will be just great !!

There may be a week left in October, but we’re already planning for November! Flat Robs and Flat Matts are ready to get out on the map for November, and we wanted to share the tentative schedule with you!

Player of the Week: Eddy Visser (BigLion)

As Munzee has grown over the years, the game has evolved in so many more ways than any of the co-founders could have imagined. We’ve certainly had our fair share of growing pains, but in its essence Munzee has tried to stick to its core goal of getting people out into the world. No one knows this better than those players who have been with us since the beginning. This week’s Player of the Week is Eddy Visser (BigLion).

Who are you?
I’m Eddy Visser, and my Munzee username is “BigLion”.

Where in the world do you live?
I’m living in a very little town call Azelo, and it’s located in the east of The Netherlands.

How long have you played Munzee?
I activated my Munzee account on May 26th, 2013, and it is now over 1600 days old.

How did you find Munzee?
I was playing another GPS game and saw a small sticker near by the location where I found the box. It made me curious because it said “Scan me for points” (it was one of the old fashioned types). Score points? Hmmm. That’s fun, and yes, a new addiction was born.

What do you most enjoy about Munzee?
Going outside for a long distance walk or taking my bike. I recently bought an E-Bike, so I can go further away. It’s the tactical and strategic gameplay of Munzee with so many variations that gives me so much enjoyment.

Often we go for a long day with more Munzee friends to a city where big virtual fields are deployed such as Cologne or Paderborn in Germany or Amsterdam (Netherlands) and we have a great time there. But nost of all, it is the joy of meeting so many players from other countries.

What is on your wish list?
There are some things on my wishlist. Munzee visits to Prague, Berlin, Budapest, and London. I have an idea of making an arrangement to travel with a touring car with a big group of plyers for several days to Prague or Budapest. Maybe sometime…

Another personal wish is to score 100 Myths in one day. Doing that in The Netherlands is not easy.

Tell us about yourself!
Well I was born in 1960 and married in the late 80’s. I’ve got two great daughters who are grown up now and living on their own. I divorced 15 years ago. After that, I had some short relationships, and now I’ve had Anita in my life for more than 6 years. In June this year, I moved into her house. My daily profession is corking in the ICT as System & Application Administrator. Seconded to a customer for more than 10 years now. The alias “BigLion” is a combination of my “2m-length” and “zodiac sign lion”. I’ve used that avatar for many years.

Other hobbies include:
Searching for caches since early 2008. Every Thursday I go out with a good friend of mine to find several caches. I’ve found over 6,000 at this time.

Listening to good much and collecting, specifically the sound of Pink Floyd and, of course, our Ilse DeLange. You should really listen to her beautiful voice and her own written lyrics are very touching.

Any last words?
Thanks to the players who nominated me for POTW. Great! And thanks fo MHQ for making this special game. One little wish from me: Give the scatered specials free for capturing on your own munzees. In areas where few players live, these specials are almost never captured.

Introducing the Gnome Leprechaun!

Last month in celebration of MHQ Bash we introduced the first AlternaMyth- The Rainbow Unicorn. Well our colorful buddy now has a new friend bouncing around and causing mischief- The Gnome Leprechaun!

In the spirit of friendship we have deployed Gnome Leprechauns for both Team Munzee and our pals over at Freeze Tag! So there are now 26 Gnome Leprechauns bouncing around the map. We have also added a Rainbow Unicorn for each Freeze Tag team member bringing the total to 26.

AlternaMyths are Mythological Munzees deployed on behalf of members of Team Munzee exclusively. You’ll get 200 points for capping the Gnome Leprechaun. Owners of the host munzee will also earn double the points of normal Leprechauns (e.g. if the Gnome Leprechaun lands on a Shamrock, the owner will receive 34 points; if it lands on a greenie, the owner will earn 12 points).

Like normal Leprechauns the Gnome bounces to greenies and shamrocks every 12 hours, but as a fan of gardens they will also be attracted to Earth Mystery Munzees. You can also pull one of these rare globetrotters closer to you with a Munzee Magnet.

Good luck on hunting down these traveling Gnomes and remember to leave a picture for us!

Diabetes Awareness Charity Special

Rob and Matt mentioned on the latest podcast that a new charity special was on the way, and we’re happy to announce that it is here! Starting now, you can purchase and deploy the Diabetes Awareness Charity Special.

Diabetes awareness is a very important cause that is near and dear to many of our hearts. From family members to friends, many, if not all, of us know someone who has been affected by diabetes. From MunzFit events to the Tour de Cure to this charity special, we’ve planned this Fall to focus on health and diabetes awareness and research.

Money raised from the Diabetes Awareness Charity Special will be donated to the American Diabetes Association through the Tour de Cure. The remainder of the money will be donated to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). The IDF is an umbrella organization that consists of over 200 diabetes associations in 170 countries to help those living with diabetes and those at risk. This charity special also coincides with World Diabetes Day (November 14th), the world’s largest diabetes awareness campaign.

The Diabetes Awareness Charity Special will be on the map from Monday, October 16th at 15:00 MHQ time (now) through Sunday, November 19th at 23:59 MHQ time. Specials can be purchased in the Munzee Online Store through October 31st at 23:59 MHQ time These are available for $2.00 each, and there is a limit of 50 per username. You can find them here. These are temporary and will be archived at the end of this special campaign, similar to previous charity campaign specials in the past.

These are temporary virtual munzees that can be placed anywhere via Quick Deploy, and there is a Diabetes Awareness filter in the app under “Virtual” (make sure to turn it on). They have a 300ft capture radius and are blastable as well. These charity specials do follow proximity rules with all other types (excluding Flats). On November 19th at 23:59 they will be archived and removed from the map so plan and deploy early.

Introducing the Freezer Burn badge!

We’re proud to announce a new challenge for our players: The Freezer Burn badge! You can earn this new badge by getting burned and frozen in the same day when capping the Fire and Ice Elemental Munzees.

The Freezer Burn badge is now live to earn, but it is not retroactive so you’ll need to prepare for some fresh burns and frostbite. We know this is no easy feat, so work with your fellow players and deploy Fire and Ice Munzees to better each others’ chances!

You can purchase an Elemental Munzee Pak in the Munzee online store, or buy individual elementals through authorized Munzee Resellers. Resellers will also have Ice Mystery Munzees on sale for 10% off.

Suffering from a brain freeze? Here’s a refresher on how each elemental effect works:

Fire Mystery Munzees

When you capture a Fire Mystery three Fires will then scatter to greenies within 1 mile. When you capture one of these Fires there is a chance you’ll extinguish the flame and earn 50 points. Unfortunately there’s also a chance you’ll get burned and LOSE 5 points. On the bright side you can earn badges for getting burned though!

Ice Mystery Munzees

Similar to the Fire, when you capture an Ice Mystery three Freezes will then scatter to greenies within 1 mile. Luckily you won’t lose any points for capturing a Freeze. Unfortunately there is also a chance you’ll be frozen and unable to play the game for one minute. Surviving the Ice Age might be worth it though because you can also earn some cool badges for getting frozen!

Flat Day The 13th Specials

There is a chill in the air and something wicked this way comes on… FLAT DAY THE 13TH!

This Friday is a Friday the 13th so we wanted to celebrate with a nefarious new special. Starting at 00:01 MHQ on October 13th a Fiendish Flat Rob will begin bouncing around the map until October 15th at 23:59 MHQ. Traditionally Friday the 13th is considered to be a very unlucky day for all involved, so let’s hope you can turn your luck around a bit this weekend!

Although Flat Rob is usually a virtual game piece, this masked version of him bounces on greenies like other specials. 1,313 masked Flat Robs will jump on greenies every 6 hours or when capped. These will be attracted to Munzee Magnets so be sure to stock up on those in the Munzee Online Store.

You CAN capture these specials on your own greenies.

Points:

31 Capture points
13 Cap On points

You’ll also earn a badge featuring our fiendishly flat friend for capturing a Flat Day The 13th special. Flat Day The 13th captures will also count toward the Specials Capture badges.

Player of the Week: Alex Williams (Squonk)

Who are you?
I’m Alex Williams aka Squonk in the Munzee world — player #89015.

Where in the world do you live?
I live in Big Sky country… Montana, USA. More specifically, Bozeman.

How long have you played Munzee?
I have been playing since March 2013. It would have been a bit earlier, but I didn’t have a phone that was compatible back then (i.e. a smart phone).

How did you find Munzee?
I was at a caching evening 12.5.2012, and another player, tdouthitt, was telling us about a game her co-worker (1 members of theirishduo) was playing. At that time, I didn’t have a phone that would work, but as soon as I upgraded phones a few months later, it was one of the first apps I downloaded.

What do you most enjoy about Munzee?
All of it — the myths, the specials , that the game keeps evolving, but especially the community of players. I appreciate how there is always another player willing to help someone grow their map. I have avirtual garden that is a bit more than 1/2 full with nearly 600 virtuals mostly because of the player community.

What is on your wish list?
For the app — moving the notification numbers to some other part of the screen so I won’t accidentally hit it because I like it when that number gets high.

For the game, I’d like Evolutions to continually evolve, e.g. after the third stage they start over again.

For the website, I’d like the map to have filters similar to the app.

And personally, I’d like to travel more to places that I haven’t capped before.

Tell us about yourself!
I’m 40-something, married for 22 years, have a couple of kids and a couple of pets. We all enjoy getting outdoors, and I especially enjoy getting out to walk and cap.

Other hobbies include:
Photography, listening to music, and reading.

Introducing Overall Destination Badges!

Room service, anyone?

We’re happy to announce that a new line of badges have been released for capturing and deploying Destination Munzees of any type. With rooms booked up so often we wanted to give our players even more of a reason to continue capturing and deploying Motels, Hotels, Virtual Resorts and Timeshares.

These new badges are retroactive, but you’ll only be able to see the requirements for the next badge once you complete the previous one.

Here’s a look at the first badge for each set.

: Lever Lock Key- Capture 150 Destination Munzees of any type. Rooms do not count.

: One Star Motel Blueprints- Deploy 250 Destination Munzees of any type. Rooms do not count.

Once you earn the first in the set you’ll unlock the requirements for the next badge. Please note that Rooms within Destination Munzees will not count toward these badges. All of the badges are live so you can start earning them now.

These badges may be a bit tough to earn, but nobody said building a Destination empire was easy!
