Mystery Virtuals ON SALE NOW!

jjMhAWlg2-so5__wEKNhYcKcbw1SYRGW5PfCarZOb70After a bit of a low key third day of the birthday month yesterday, Munzee is happy to announce a few things today. We said to expect the unexpected right? Players will now have the ability to deploy Mystery Virtual Munzees from within the app. In addition to using a computer to deploy the MVMs, you’ll be able to do it all from your phone, on location. Hopefully this will make the process a bit easier on players. But what are you going to deploy to test this new addition to Munzee?

Well we’re also happy to announce that Mystery Virtual Munzees are on sale NOW in the birthday section of the store. The MVMs have been knocked down to $5, but premium users will also get an additional 33% off all birthday items when they check out. There will also be a number of other items on sale in the birthday section. Mystery Virtuals will go fast though so get to buying quickly, because this sale won’t go on for long. CoachV will end the sale when he sees fit, so get to the store now.

PinataBadge_720There has also been another influx of piñatas, so there’s no excuse not to get the mint, drop and lollipop before they disappear at the end of the birthday month. If there still aren’t any in your area, worry not. I’m sure CoachV will decide to throw a few more out by month’s end.

Also, be sure to check out the Munzee 3rd Birthday Video starring our players! After a weekend of Munzee Birthday celebrations, we’ve complied as many social media contributions as possible to show the world just how awesome Munzee is. If you stick it through you might also get a behind the scenes look at how some members of Team Munzee celebrated the birthday!

Munzee Player of the Week: Nathan Toliver (Semipaw)

What makes Munzee stand out among the sea of smartphone apps is its close ties to healthy activity. While the Munzee community is deeply devoted to ever-evolving technology, we also encourage our players to continue to get out into the world and adventure. Whether it’s the urban landscapes or countryside, Munzee takes its players all over. Nathan Toliver (SemiPaw) is this week’s Player of the Week and his love of the wilderness is fueled even more by his love of finding greenies.

SemipawFamWho are you?
My name is Nathan Toliver and my munzee handle is Semipaw.

Where in the world do you live?
I live in the heart of the Ozarks smack dab in the middle of the Midwest (Ozark, Missouri, USA).

How long have you played Munzee?
I began munzeeing in February of 2014.

What do you enjoy most about Munzee?
I’ve always enjoyed getting outside and exploring, especially hiking on trails and getting out into the woods. We have plenty of trails here in the Ozarks region of southern Missouri and northern Arkansas and when I looked at the map and saw a bunch of munzees lining many of our trails, it gave me one more reason to get outdoors and go for a hike. Although I enjoy all munzees, I really like the ones that are placed out on the trails and require a little effort to cap. My favorites are the lonely greenies that have been deployed years ago and have gotten very few (if any) visitors. I find it exciting to find something that had been hanging (or sticking) quietly for so long without being found. There are so many lonely little greenies hanging out here in the Ozarks, it will probably take me years to cap them all.  But that’s my goal.

I also really enjoy the clan wars. I love having goals each month to work toward.  I find it a lot of fun to track me and my clanmates progress each month as we work toward a common goal. Speaking of clans, I must give a shout out to the Ozark Power Players clan. We’ve got a great clan, have a lot of fun, and shoot for chuck (or now super-chuck when we can) every month. It’s a great group of people who really try to help each other every month.

What is on your wish list?
As one can imagine, I really enjoyed the triple points day on greenies that occurred in July.  I spent almost the whole day out in the hot July sun deploying and capping greenies that day. I would love to see more days like that. Even a double point day would be appreciated.  I also would love to see greenie captures incorporated more into the clan wars, to get more people out capping them.

My kiddosTell us about yourself…
I’ve lived in the Ozarks my whole life. Whenever I’m not munzeeing, I enjoy getting outdoors and hiking (which now usually incorporates munzeeing). My wife and I have been married for almost 14 years, and we have eight children that keep us busy. I am passionate about nature and preserving natural areas for future generations. I love the fact that munzees can lead me to a place I have yet to explore, and allows me to take others to such places.

Announcing the Munzee 3X Point Day!

Munzee-Map-Marker-128-standardMunzee’s third birthday has been full of announcements, sales and chances to win free prizes, but now it’s time to get back to the basics. Three years ago Munzee was a small game built upon one goal: capturing greenies. So as you may have heard on the podcast, starting at midnight (MHQ, GMT-5) on Saturday July 12th we will be having a three times point day on all greenies! For 24 hours players who capture and deploy greenies will get three times as many points. This is an exciting opportunity for players to get 5k and 10k badges, level up and help further grow the game.

Throughout the past week there has been some speculation throughout social media though, so allow us to clear it up: CAP-ONS WILL NOT GIVE OWNERS 3X POINTS. I’m sure this will be a shock to many of you, but we want our players out in the field to earn their points just like in Munzee’s early days. The captures and deploys you make on July 12th will get you three times the points, but you will not receive extra points for your greenies that have been scanned.

We want to thank all of you who have supported us for three years and will continue to do so in the future. The game has expanded beyond any of our wildest dreams, but its important to appreciate how far we have come. So get ready for Saturday and hopefully you guys won’t overheat our servers again!

Munzee Player of the Week: John Boksteyn (Jobok)

All it takes is one cap and you’re a player for life, at least that’s what we at Munzee continue to hear time and time again. Whether you’ve played geo-location games for a long time or a friend randomly told you about it , Munzee is addictive from first scan. This week’s Player of the Week is John Boksteyn (Jobok) and like many of our players it just took a random munzer sighting to get him hooked. Read on to get to know a bit more about Jobok and his Munzee “obsession.”

Who are you?2014-06-14 11.44.38
John Boksteyn (Jobok)

Where in the world do you live?
I live in Medicine Hat, Alberta Canada with my wife Deidra (Deedster) and own two Rovers, Stella & Steve.

How long have you played Munzee?
I have been playing, no, make that obsessed with Munzee for about a year and a half now, so 602 days.

How did you discover Munzee?
I was driving in Redcliff (A small community just outside of Medicine Hat) and spotted one of my buddies beside the road walking in circles. I stopped to check it out. He was searching for a Munzee. It was a new game he had heard about so I joined in and together we found the 1st of four that existed in the area. That is all it took to get me hooked. Currently there are over 7,500 Munzees in the Medicine Hat area.

What do you enjoy most about Munzee?
I like capping, deploying, clans, specials and badges. I really like everything about the game. It’s really fun getting outside and having a goal. Anywhere you go, there’s a Munzee nearby and if there isn’t, there will will be.

What is on your wish list?
European Vacation!!! MUNZEE STYLE!!

Tell us about yourself!
I was born and raised in Medicine Hat and I’m still here! I work as an Electrical Lineman for a local utility company. I am married to my wonderful wife Deidra (Deedster) and we have four grown children and one awesome grandson, Cahleb!
We recently became the owners to two little Jack Russell Terriers (Rovers) who’s names are Stella and Steve who we hope to take on the trail with us wherever the game leads us.

What are some of your other hobbies?
– Caching
– Sturgeon Fishing in British Columbia
– Driving Deedster insane =)

I’d like to say a special “Thank You” to those who nominated me for Player of the Week!!

Meet Munzee Munday: Matt McCann

Here at Munzee we’re constantly encouraging our players to meet and greet and build the personal relationships that make this game so great. Over the next few weeks we’ll be showcasing members of Team Munzee so our players can get to know us a bit better. So each Munday (see what we did there?) check in to see a new member of Team Munzee and you decide if you trust the game in our hands. We may still call him The Intern, but this week’s Munzee Team member does far more than fetch coffee. Meet marketer Matt McCann!

Name and Title:
Matthew McCann, Business Development/Marketing

2014-06-18 10.20.52Where are you from?
I was born in Lake Havasu, Arizona and moved 4 times (California, New Mexico, and Kansas) before my family finally settled in Port Isabel, Texas when I was 6. I spent most of my life there before moving up to Dallas for college. I’ve been here for four years now.

Tell us about yourself:
Sports, craft beer, and technology are the things my life revolves around when I’m not in school (yes, I’m still attending UT Dallas) or at work. I love to travel, especially for sports, and I’m on a mission to visit all MLB ballparks. I also spend quite a bit of time binge watching movies and TV shows.

How long have you worked for Munzee?
About two months.

climbHow did you find Munzee?
I actually knew Rob (President of Munzee) and TJ (VP of Operations and Marketing) from Allen Americans (our local CHL hockey team) games. We met before either started working for Munzee, and when they joined the Munzee team, I learned more and more about it. When I was looking for work earlier this year, I inquired with TJ, interviewed for the job and started work a week later.

What do you enjoy most about Munzee?
For anyone that’s been to MHQ or met members of the Munzee team, one thing is apparent: this isn’t just a job. The members of the Munzee team are invested in the game and players. We may have laid back attitudes, but our work is top priority. We do everything we can to make the game better and grow our player base.

IMG_2088What are some of your other hobbies?
Tying back into what I said earlier, sports and technology consume my life. I can usually be found watching a sport (baseball, soccer, and hockey are my favorites) in my free time. I also play on an indoor soccer team. I’m also a huge SciFi nerd. I love Doctor Who, Torchwood, and Superman. While I’m watching any of these things, I’m usually tinkering on my computer, phone, or tablet. I started learning coding (PHP, Java, and HTML/CSS) for fun. Music is my other passion whether it be listening, making, or editing. I treat myself to concerts when I can, and I’ve edited music for teams and individuals competing in dance competitions.

Famous last words?
“This is who I am, right here, right now, all right? All that counts is here and now, and this is me!” – The Doctor

Munzee Player of the Week: Helge Jans (JansEgal)

As the Munzee community continues to grow our players are taking the initiative to advance the game on their own. Player organized events are becoming increasingly popular and this week’s Player of the Week is continuing the trend. Helge Jans (JansEgal) is helping organize the “Hummel Hummel Munzee Event” in Hamburg, Germany at the end of August and his excitement and dedication to the game is obvious. Read on for more about Helge and how he hopes events like this will continue to introduce more new players to the game and current players to each other.

Who are you?
My name is Helge Jans, most of you know me as JansEgal from the “Freaky Munzee Clan.”

Where in the world do you live?
I live in Northern Germany, very close to Hamburg, one of the world’s Munzee capitals. I’m lucky to have my office in the heart of this beautiful city – close to the hot spots main station and Binnenalster with new virtuals every day. Because many of my lunch breaks are Munzee breaks my dear colleague Radwanderer has become a Munzer, too.

How long have you played Munzee?
This summer it’s two years that I‘m addicted to Munzee.

Munzee_HamburgHow did you find Munzee?
Two years ago we had a BBQ in our garden. While I stood at the barbecue a friend came to me with two bottles of beer and his latest crazy notion (his words!). He told me of the game and before the steaks were prepared I had downloaded the app and subscribed to Munzee. I remember he was very proud to have already achieved more than 4,000 points! He was sure that I had no chance to catch up with him. Today it takes a few minutes to achieve 4,000 points but in those days of Munzee it took me months to catch up with him.

What do you enjoy most about Munzee?
I enjoy seeing parts of cities that I would have never seen without Munzee. For example the Port of Hamburg. Hamburg has one oft he largest harbors in Europe, but usually you do not walk on the streets between cranes and warehouses. While playing Munzee I found there a lot of nice spots with a fantastic view of the town.

Hamburg

Tell us about yourself!
I am 43 years old and when I‘m not on a Munzee trail I’m running a mail order business for high quality dog accessories (www.DogsFinest.de). Two more webshops with horse accessories and with products for people with allergies will follow this year. A lot of work, but I always hope to have enough time to capture some Munzees.

What are some of your other hobbies?
The only other hobby that I can reconcile with playing Munzee is traveling with my family. In April this year for example I visited Angel Stadium in Anaheim and became the proud owner of the Motel @Fisherman’s Wharf San Francisco. One of the greatest advantages of Munzee is that we can play it all over the world.

What is on your wish list?
I wish to meet many players from all over the world in Hamburg. We are currently planning the Hummel Hummel Munzee Event 2014 in Hamburg which takes place from August 29-31. It’s a great opportunity to visit the most beautiful city and some of the hottest Munzee spots in the world!

This July we have a long list of events and announcements planned throughout the month, so be sure to stay tuned as we reveal more in the coming weeks. • $3 Virtuals
  • $3 Socials
  • $3 Rovers

-3Take advantage of those discounted Rovers and get them out of their kennels. You’re going to need them if you want to get your hands on the exclusive Birthday Barker badge this July. You can get the badge in one of three ways:

  1. If you interact with 3 rovers that you do not own
  2. or If a rover you own interacts with 3 unique players
  3. or If a rover you own reaches 33 miles of combined distance throughout the month

GemRuby_128What’s a birthday without presents? We’ll have prize days throughout the month featuring physical, virtual and totally random prizes. Our first prize day is Thursday July 3rd (mid morning MHQ time) where players have a chance to get Blast Caps, Mystery Virtuals and… a SPECIAL NEW MUNZEE type to celebrate our July Birthday. Those who saw the July Clan Requirements may have heard a bit about this new sparkle in coachv’s eye, but check in Thursday morning to learn exactly what the new munzee is.

Meet Munzee Munday: Peter Vogt

Here at Munzee we’re constantly encouraging our players to meet and greet and build the personal relationships that make this game so great. Over the next few weeks we’ll be showcasing members of Team Munzee so our players can get to know us a bit better. So each Munday (see what we did there?) check in to see a new member of Team Munzee and you decide if you trust the game in our hands. This week we get to know our new designer, Peter Vogt.

Name and Title:
Peter Vogt, User Interface Designer.

Where are you from?
I was born and raised in Norfolk, Massachusetts. Equidistant between Boston and Providence (yes that’s a word, yes that fact is true, and yes I’m damn proud of our little town). I went to college in Connecticut and have been living in Texas the past few years. Hate to admit it, but I’m probably never leaving.

10363375_10202644128317484_6683635819194616210_nTell us about yourself:
Well, I’m slowly creeping up on the wrong end of my twenties, but I don’t feel too awful about it at the moment. I’m a lover of technology, hound dogs (we have two – Bonnie & Huckleberry), cinema, gaming and music. Firearm and Central Texas-style barbecue enthusiast. Retired punk rocker. Lifelong geek.

1458565_10201547614185316_1266022857_nHow long have you worked for Munzee?
Just about a month.

How did you find Munzee?
I found their post for a designer on Reddit’s “for hire” section. The thought of working for a mobile game company based out of McKinney of all places really intrigued me, so I sent a reply pretty much right away. They impressed me, I impressed them, here I am now.

What do you enjoy most about Munzee?
The community of Munzee impresses me the most. It feels really good jumping on board with a company whose fans, friends, family and local community are so gung-ho about the product. I’ve kept a pretty close eye on the Munzee Facebook groups ever since joining up and love reading the feedback and seeing people come up with really creative and awesome new ways to Munzee. I love the support and love we get from the town of McKinney. Everything about and surrounding Munzee is special and fun right now. My co-workers are incredibly talented, informed and helpful people. Rob is an outstanding leader.

What is your favorite Munzee?
I love the virtuals. I’ve deployed in all of my previous hometowns and it’s great seeing someone from Massachusetts drop by my childhood home to play.

Screen Shot 2014-06-29 at 11.57.09 PMWhat are some of your other hobbies?
I live and breathe my craft in the sense that I’m always trying to learn as much as I can about design, development and working with tech startups. I love creating products, communities and shiny fancy internet stuff. At home and in the office. My girlfriend and I watch a metric ton of movies together which has become a hobby all on it’s own, as we’re always looking for new and obscure stuff to geek out over. Chasing after our two beloved (and dumb) hounds is a daily task in and of itself and on weekends you can find me smoking briskets, ribs and sausage while tending to the fire pit of my offset cooker. It’s named Cool Runnings and it definitely feels the rhythm.

Famous last words?
“It’s a hundred and six miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a packet of cigarettes, it’s dark and we’re wearing sunglasses. Hit it.”

Munzee Player of the Week: Roderick Howie (rodz)

As Munzee approaches it’s third birthday celebration we like to look back on our humble beginnings. Although we now have more than 165,000 players, we wouldn’t be where we are now without our first loyal followers. One of those players has continued to be a staple in his community across the pond. We’re proud to announce that Roderick Howie (rodz) is this week’s Player of the Week. Rodz, who was Munzee’s 150th player to join, also celebrates his third Munzee birthday today (June 26th) so scroll down to learn a bit more about the Brit.

-4Who are you?
Funnily enough I am Rodz in real life too – although my given name is Roderick Howie I get called all sorts of things. MHQ side of the pond I often get called Howie but that was my school name.

Where in the world do you live?
I am fortunate to live in London here in Blighty. I think it is one of the most amazing cities in the world, so culturally rich and so ethnically diverse. It is a double-edged Longsword that there are relatively few other Munzeers here as I have been able to accumulate a lot of prime real estate. The downside of that being the recent introduction of activity points and number of captures. Those that know me know my motto is “deploy, deploy and deploy some more!”

How long have you played Munzee?
Over 1086 days – I had to borrow my brother’s iPhone to deploy my first as the Android version hadn’t been released yet. I think that was 26th June 2011.

How did you find Munzee?
I usually find the app is the easiest way to find Munzees, but did start out with a Garmin unit too. Hehe! I think I first heard about it on an unnameable forum that also involves the use of a GPS receiver.

-2What do you enjoy most about Munzee?
I love the spontaneity and innovation, to just fire up the app and off I go. The team is amazing at bringing new ideas to the game (and getting money out of my pocket). The clan wars bring a lot of interaction with other players and an extra twist in strategy. I enjoy surprising unsuspecting local cappers – be warned – and love watching points roll in at home from cap ons!

What is on your wish list?
Apart from a Ferrari, I would like to see the ability to use QR codes found in public to be Munzeed! So that permanent QR code at the bus stop could be converted to a Munzee. I would also like to see the removal of special (bought) Munzees being auto-archived for premium members. Oh and maybe change the event background pic to be something better that a bin/trash can shot!

T-3ell us about yourself!
I’m a 51 year old Brit (although born in Scotland on April Fool’s Day – yay more birthday wishes next year!) and a counsellor. That combo means talking about myself is less familiar (British reserve and self disclosure) and a bit embarrassing haha! AND I am still working on my addiction to Munzee.

What are some of your other hobbies include?
Cycling to Munzees, going on holiday where there are plenty of Munzees, etc. You get the drift! A big thanks to all that nominated me (you know who you are – MHQ can get some rest now) and all the contributors to the various rings that I have set up in the capital. I love the community spirit of Munzee.

Rod was kind enough to share his social with us, so cap away!
