Munzee Player of the Week: Frank Broughton (FrankBroughton)

Much like our map, Munzee the game is always growing. We’ve evolved in our three years and continue to do so every day. That being said, we’ve had growing pains and some times that loses the interest of players, but we pride ourselves on fixing our errors and earning back respect. This week’s Player of the Week wasn’t impressed with Munzee his first go around, but he’s happy he gave the game a second chance. Frank Broughton went from deleting the app to running a unique system of clans in the Western New York area and hasn’t looked back since. It’s this dedication that proves to us that our game means something and we take pride in knowing players will always give us another chance. Read on to learn more about FrankBroughton!

Who are you?
Hmmmm… I do not know, sometimes I ask myself that same question. The answer varies… from simple man, to complex man, to father, to dad, to husband, to grandpa, to friend, to leader, to follower, to loner. My Munzee player name is my real name, “FrankBroughton”.

Where in the world do you live?

I live in Western New York. In small country town, south of the City of Buffalo. Munzee has grown immensely in Western NY. Niagara Falls is 45 minutes away from Team Broughton HQ.

How long have you played Munzee?
I joined the Munzee website on October 1st of 2012.

How did you find Munzee?
I run a forum for other GPS based location games and hobbies. One of my good friends asked this question on a thread he started “Dare I use the “M” word?” GOF Munzee introduced me to Munzee that day. I was skeptical of the game at first, I even deleted the APP shortly after (it crashed too many times on my phone). Some time had passed and another friend of mine talked me into giving the game another attempt. He mentioned how the APP had improved, he encouraged me download it again, I did. He even walked me through a park finding some Munzees. Something clicked, Rayman, thank you for that day. You reintroduced me to Munzee and I have never turned back from that point.

20140922_150740What do you enjoy most about Munzee?
Easily first, I love the clan aspect of the game. I love running the NY & Friends Munzee Hunter Group of Clans and our Facebook group. We currently have 6 clans, each one has different goals allowing players to jump from clan to clan depending on the effort they feel they can dedicate to the game on a given month. I could write a small book on this aspect of the game. Secondly, I love the freshness of the game. I love how Team Munzee is always coming up with something new. From the various types of clan requirements, to new Munzee types, to specials on the map, the weekly Google hangout, the up and coming Munzee event APP, and more. There is something always fresh and new about the game of Munzee. Third, I love the competition aspect of the game. It pushes me to get to the top of the score boards, to earn more badges, and to have my clan’s streak of superchucking continue on. Yes, I enjoy many aspects of the game of Munzee. Last but hardly least, I enjoy getting out with some of my family playing the game together. Two of my sons, GoldenEagle and EagleClaw, and my wife SunShower, are active in the game. (Shout out to Katzrule712, my faithful clan teammate.)

DSCF2721What is on your wish list?

Glad you asked. I think it would be very neat to see the creation of the Munzee Missile! It would work just like a standard blast, but the different being one picks a virtual Munzee any place in the world as a target. The Munzee missile lands at that location and captures the nearest 100 virtual Munzees within the blast zone. Let’s face it, many players will never have the chance to travel the world to get to the many awesome Virtual Gardens on planet earth. The missile Munzee would be a neat tool. Make it so it would have to be earned, and rare. Perhaps the ability to earn one for say each 1,000 deploys and 1,000 captures of Greenies. Something along that line. It really could work and be a fun part of the game. It covers the virtual world and the ground game. Again, it would have to be earned.

Tell us about yourself!
I have been through some bumps and bruises in my 55 years so far of life. From my dad passing when I was 13, to my first born son passing at age 26. I have to say though, I also have been very blessed. I have a wonderful wife and 7 other kids. I have 5 wonderful grand children. I have had the great privilege of working for my church full time for 23 years now. I am someone who puts his all in most everything I attempt to do. I love this Jack Dempsey quote, “A champion is someone who gets up, even when he can’t.”  I know that feeling.

DSCN0687-003Other hobbies include:
I have a passion for Fireworks. I put on a huge show on America’s Independence Day each year at a summer camp I help run. I use the Cobra Electronic Firing system to create a pyromusical (fireworks synced to music). I am an administrator on a very popular Fireworks forum. I enjoy scenic photography, hiking, and simple things such as watching sunsets with my wife.

Munzee Player of the Week: Helen Boardman (AusTrackers)

Munzee is more than a hobby, it’s a lifestyle. It pushes you to explore the area around you and opens a new world of discovery. This week’s Player of the Week is Helen Boardman (AusTrackers) from Perth, Australia. She and her fellow Aussie Munzers may be up Munzeeing when most of MHQ is asleep, but they’ve developed an extremely active community Down Under. We’re proud to have the game become so passionate so far into the world and it’s players like AusTrackers that continue to grow the game. Read on to learn more about AusTrackers!

PeruWho are you?

My name is Helen Boardman and my munzee name is AusTrackers. My husband and I started with munzee as a joint team, but after a trip to Europe without him last year he decided to defect and create his own account.

Where in the world do you live?

I live in Perth, Western Australia, and we are fortunate to have a very active munzee community, because we are so far from everywhere else.

How long have you played Munzee?

Since 27th August 2011.

How did you find Munzee?

It was at a local caching event, a very forward thinking person (TheMachman) placed the first Western Australian munzee, but I didn’t have a smart enough phone at the time…. I started playing a few weeks later as soon as I updated my phone.

Perth Munzee BirthdayWhat do you enjoy most about Munzee?

I love the exercise and getting outside. When the clan battles first started we said “There is no way we will be able to keep this up; one month, we will just compete for one month”….so I guess that I like the competitiveness as well because we have competed in all 17 battles so far. I liked the mean scores for the battles because I felt it allowed the clan as a whole to assist others members to achieve the goals…real team play. I have really enjoyed meeting other munzers and discussing the common interest we share.

What is on your wish list?

Quite a few things……Badges for visiting different countries, more notice for the clan requirements and some sort of puzzle munzees as I really like puzzles – I loved Qrazy’s munzees. I would like the humble greenies to be more appreciated (the triple point days are helping with that). And of course I would like to visit the official Munzee Marketplace and meet the Munzee team. Number one wish is for an all Australian clan to achieve a GOLD medal in the clan wars (we are currently working on that) Go The Aussie Scavengers #2.

PolandTell us about yourself!

I’m 52, married to Gary (Auscapee), and I have 3 daughters (the youngest at 19 is ‘backwardspace’). I do most of my munzee hunting with CrazyLadyLisa (my sister). We go out every weekend and then interstate/overseas when we can fit it in.

Other hobbies include:

Traveling, which is a perfect accompaniment for Munzee. We still find tupperware containers, but only enough to keep our statistics from sliding, we are just too busy with QR codes.

I’d like to say a big THANK YOU to the person that sent in the nomination.

Munzee Gift Specials are on the map NOW!

Uh oh-GiftBlue_128 looks like Santazee lost a few presents on his test flight across the world! As some of our more attentive players have noticed, specials gift icons have started to pop up across the map and it’s up to you to cap them before the winter holidays are over. There are 500 gift specials around the map which bounce if not capped after 6 hours. Once captured, 25 points will be split between owner and capper, with a minimum of 5 points each. If you cap a gift you’ll even get to open it and get yourself a nifty Snow Globe Badge!

These presents will be on the map throughout the month, so be sure to capture them while you can! Check out www.munzee.com/gifts for a map showing where the nearest gift is to you. Santa also has a few more test flights before the big day, so keep your eye out for any other drops. Expect the unexpected and Happy holidays!Xmas2014_720

Announcing the 2015 Munzee Theme Contest!

The end of 2014 is near and it has been a wild ride. From freezing over McKinney, TX with ALS Ice Cubes to introducing new munzee types, Munzee has truly lived up to its 2014 theme of “Expect the Unexpected.” So now that the new year is upon us, we need our players’ help coming up with a new theme for 2015. Who knows Munzee better than our faithful players? We’re accepting submissions starting today (12/9) and we’ll continue through December 14, 2014. Then starting on December 15th we’ll take our 5 favorite themes and let the rest of the Munzee community vote on which is the winner. Voting will run until December 22 and we’ll announce the winner on January 1, 2015.

So to break it down:

  • Theme submissions: 12/9-12/14
  • Top 5 Voting: 12/15-12/22
  • Theme Announcement: 1/1/2015

To submit a theme CLICK HERE and include your username and theme phrase.

We’re really excited about this opportunity and we hope our players see just how important this. We based our entire year around “Expect the Unexpected” and we’re sure the theme you pick will do the same in 2015. As for general guidelines, this is pretty limitless. We ask that you keep the theme short and not use any well known phrases from other brands (Just Do It, Put A Smile On, Etc.), but other than that, the future of Munzee is in your hands!

The Winner of the 2014 Munzee Photo Contest!

After weeks of photo submissions from our players, the 2014 Munzee Photo Contest has found its winner. Among hundreds of submissions, the top 5 photos were chosen and we invited players to our Facebook page to vote on which image perfectly embodied the Munzee experience. The winner, who captured the photo below, is Luciano Reis (fotoluca) and he found the combination of urban construction and rural landscape to be a perfect balance of Munzee’s wide variety of play. Read on to learn a more about fotoluca and his submission!winner

How long have you played Munzee?
Since 2011.

Where was this photo taken?
Near a small chapel in Samouco.

Why did you choose this photo?
This picture has all the components that you can expect when you Munzee: a beautiful landscape, sunny weather, blue and green. It’s a mix of urban and countryside. It actually speaks for itself.

How does this photo make you think of Munzee?
It’s all about perspective, when we have our Munzee “mode on”, we see the world in another way. Nice weather means nice walks, and of course, more points!

Munzee Player of the Week: Honza Stastny (CACHEEATER)

We’re always pushing our players to grow the map. Although some areas are bigger than others, they all started somewhere and took the hard work and dedication of our players to grow. This week’s Player of the Week remembers when his home city of Prague was just a few dozen greenies and now the game has grown exponentially. We’re proud to announce Honza Stastny (CACHEEATER) as this week’s POTW and hope he continues to help his Munzee community grow! Read on for more about CACHEEATER!

CACHEEATER 13Who are you?

Honza Stastny (CACHEEATER). My surname „Stastny“ means Happy and this is who I am.  Whoever is happy will make others happy too. And I like to make others happy!

Where in the world do you live?

I live in a beautiful city of Prague, Czech Republic.

How long have you played Munzee?

Today I celebrate …. oh …. no … 666 days …. wait … no. It was yesterday! O.K. 667 days today. (Editor’s note: It’s been a few months since he sent this. We think he’s in the clear from demonic possession now.)

CACHEEATER 12How did you find Munzee?

I discovered my first munzee while I was caching. I immediately checked out what it was, but created an account a few months later.

What do you enjoy most about Munzee?

Tak hlavne to, jak je to jednoduche. Pipnes, publikujes (in english please!!!) Oh sh.. Sorry. I like it is so easy to play. To go out and capture or deploy. We don’t stop playing because we get old. We get old because we stop playing. So I’m going to stay young forever 😉

Thanks to Munzee I met a lot of new players, visited new cities and beautiful places. This is a very quick game and I can always expect something unexpected – new specials, sales, server issues – it has really enriched my life 😉 CoachV and CACHEEATER in COLOGNE EVENT

I am very proud of how Munzee has grown in the Czech Republic, especially in Prague! Prague has become a ‘destination’ for Munzee players around the world to visit, see the magnificent architecture and beautiful surroundings AND cap a LOT of Munzees! When I started to play there were several dozen greenies and FIVE virtuals – now it is one BIG, BIG coloured cluster filled with greenies, motels, specials and thousands of virtuals! All surrounded by amazing architecture and history. You all are very warm welcome to Prague!

What is on your wish list?

Visit more new places, meet more new friends, capture more munzees …

I would like to see Munzee fix the problems with capping virtuals all around the world using changed location. It is still a big problem. The special icons have change the game a lot and I see all around me a lot of greenies without captures because most players prefer special icons. It is a pity I guess. I wish more “greenies related” days 😉 I love Clan Wars and the way they are each month different. Good for greenies were April Clan Wars. It was based solely on our activity! 1 capture = 1 point. 1 deploy = 1 point. And socials were excluded from these calculations. It was fair for most players and you could see the different results in the end of month 🙂  I would also love to see the daily leaderboards based solely on activity as I mentioned above! It is hard for new players to get to Top daily leaderboard (and get Winner, First Loser, Lucky and Unlucky badges) if other players get thousands of cap on points each day 😉

CACHEEATER AT WORK 2Tell us about yourself!

About myself … What to write … I don’t know … The remarkable position in which I find myself is that I don’t actually know what I actually know … 🙂 Did I mention I like interviews, but don’t speak english?? …

One of my dreams I had when I was much younger has been fulfilled – I became a bus driver 🙂 But I have new dreams and keep working on these. Dreams keep me motivated.

Other hobbies include;

I like driving and I like buses. In my leisure time I make the paper buses – small simple models not only for children. Look at www.paperbusmodels.com 😉 I also like hiking trips out of Prague and traveling somewhere abroad. This year I visited beautiful Scotland, in 2011 I spent the absolutely best month in Alaska. I love calm places, nature and wild animals. I really enjoyed that journey and took a lot of photos. In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks.

Munzee Player of the Week: Iain Grant (Pilsleyguy)

Although Munzee is still relatively young, we’re always impressed when we see players breaking record after record within the game. The number 1 position on the leaderboard is a coveted battleground that’s ever changing, but to those who fight their way to the top it’s well worth the long days Munzeeing. It certainly doesn’t hurt when that battle also gets you to 3 million points. This week’s Player of the Week did just that and hit a milestone for himself and Munzee in general. Read on to learn more about Iain Grant (Pilsleyguy)!

Iain BerlinWho are you?
Pilsleyguy. My real name is Iain Grant and I’m 43 years old.

Where in the world do you live?
I currently live in the town of Poole, which is situated in the county of Dorset, on the south coast of England.

How long have you played Munzee?
I started playing Munzee in February 2013.

How did you find Munzee?
I first heard about it from a good friend of mine Mark (Jamspongeandouzy), who mentioned it one day in a Social Media post. Later that week I chatted to him about this whilst round at a friends for dinner, I downloaded the app and nipped outside to capture a couple of Munzee’s that were close by. A few days later I capped a few more and slowly got hooked from there. At the time there were not too many Munzee’s in the local area and they were very spread out. Unlike a lot of other Munzee players, I had not played any other similar games beforehand.

Iain munzee 2What do you enjoy most about Munzee?
Lot’s of things. I was firstly drawn by the general gameplay and the amount of statistics that go with the game. I’ve also been a fan of maps and map reading, so really it was only a matter of time before I discovered Munzee. When I first started playing, I tended to go out on my own, but after a couple of weeks I managed to find a few groups on Social Media and realised that there were quite a few people in my local area with the same hobby. I then started to meet other players whilst out Munzeeing and the friendships just grew from there.

Clan wars started in April 2013, soon after I joined Munzee and I was lucky enough to be invited into a local clan (Dorset & Hampshire 1) and managed to get a 1st place in August 2013 and then again in April 2014, which was great. Then in September I joined Foxtrot Oscar and we managed to win that months clan wars too, with the best ever score of 4,687,894 – the month when we all went a little Ice crazy! I’ve been lucky enough to travel abroad a number of times, accompanied by my bodyguard, Michelle (LILYGRIMALDI) at all times and sometimes other friends have joined us too! – I’m very lucky to have so many fantastic places to visit in Europe that are not too far away from the UK. My biggest achievement in Munzee was managing to get to that coveted world no.1 position back in September. I was in Berlin at the time and had a little celebration at the Brandenburg Gate. Then in early November 2014, whilst on another Munzee trip to the Netherlands, I managed to break through the 3 million points barrier, which I’m pretty chuffed about.

FO
What is on your wish list?

I wish everybody would place all of their virtual Munzee’s in Poole and Bournemouth area so I didn’t have to keep travelling abroad all the time!!! A phone that never needed charging would also be very useful too.

Tiain munzee 5ell us about yourself!
Let me start by explaining where my Munzee name, Pilsleyguy comes from. Pilsley is a very small village in the county of Derbyshire in central England. I lived there between 2007 and 2011 and a few people that I knew at the time called me Pilsleyguy – this sort of stuck with me and when I had to decide for a Munzee name, it was the only thing I could think of at the time, even though I had moved away from the area by then. As I mentioned earlier, I currently live in a town called Poole which sit’s next to the town of Bournemouth, on the UK’s south coast. It’s a lovely part of the UK, which has some fantastic sandy beaches and some stunning local countryside. Being on the south coast means that the weather does tend to be a little nicer and a little warmer than other part of the UK, and this attracts thousands of holiday makers, especially during the summer months.

lego man2Despite the large number of trips abroad I take to Munzee, I do actually have a full time job at a Housing Association – It’s a company that owns houses and apartments in the local area which it then rents out. My work colleagues think I am mad although I do regularly get questions about how high my score is or where my next trip is going to be! Also, if anyone was wondering about the little photo icon I use of a Lego man, it’s actually a picture of my 40th birthday cake that a friend got specially made for me!

Other hobbies include:
I don’t have much time at the moment for other hobbies, although I do like spending the afternoon on my favorite local beach (in the summer) and traveling abroad (which is a good thing really).

Munzee Player of the Week: Eszter (TurtleFan)

Munzee urges you to explore the world one cap at a time. The game directs players to new and unique areas and offers a social interactions through those explorations. Whether you cap in your hometown or travel across the world, you never know where you’ll find a munzee. We thank our players for growing the map in such unique ways and continue to support venturing off the beaten path. This week’s Munzee Player of the Week has taken our game to farther reaches than our founders would ever have thought possible and we’re pleased to have Eszter (TurtleFan) as a member of our community. Read on to learn more about Eszter!

TurtleFan-AustraliaWho are you?
Most people know me as Eszter (pronounced “Ester”), which may seem like a weird spelling of how that name is known in most areas of the globe, but it’s just the standard Hungarian version. In GPS game world, people know me as TurtleFan.

Where in the world do you live?
I am based in the Chicago area, but travel quite a bit all times of the year mainly for work to give talks or to meet with collaborators, but I tend to mix in play. I have lived in four countries and in eight US states so I feel at home in all sorts of locations. I have deployed physical Munzees from Australia to Cuba, from Jordan to Switzerland, from Hungary to various corners of the US.

How long have you played Munzee?
I signed up for an account in Fall 2011, but didn’t have a Munzee compatible device at the time so couldn’t start playing for a while. I capped my first couple of Munzees on January 2, 2012 in downtown Chicago when a friend and I were out playing another game. There was so little game play in the area at the time that I didn’t cap my next Munzee for another two months while visiting Cambridge, Massachusetts, and then the next ones in Ann Arbor, Michigan followed by a cap in New Jersey.

How did you find Munzee?
I’m afraid I have no strong memory of this. I probably heard about it from a local player whom I knew through another game. I liked Munzee’s comparative flexibility and the occasional surprises thrown in. I also hugely appreciate that players are rewarded for growing the map. I have since gotten others to sign up, both locally and elsewhere, and am always eager to spread Munzee love.

What do you enjoy most about Munzee?
I enjoy several things about Munzee, from the physical movement and exploration it encourages to the social interactions. My wonderful clan, Munzter Mash, used to have people from three continents in it. Now we’re down to two continents, but still have three countries represented with several US states. Although being so disbursed geographically makes it harder to coordinate strategically at times, it adds an element of fun to learn about other places through my clanmates’ stories and as I explore their local areas in an attempt to deploy virtual Munzees for them. It has been neat to get to know folks with whom I would never have crossed paths otherwise.

TurtleFan-BudapestEventWhile it may not be the case that every Munzee takes us to a special location, groups of Munzees definitely encourage interesting exploration. This past summer I was in Hamburg for a few days and picked a park to visit based on some of the Munzees there. I would never have gone to that park, in fact, the people in my hotel didn’t even understand why I wanted to go there. In the end I was happy I’d gone, because it was a beautiful area of town with some great views that I never would have explored otherwise. Also, I have been a Fitbit user for years and value having it linked up with Munzee. I reached a new daily best in Bremen, Germany when a specials trail pushed me to walk much farther than I would have otherwise.

What is on your wish list?
I would like there to be more opportunities to revisit Munzees we have already found like it is the case with specials. For those of us in areas that don’t have numerous players, we run out of Munzees quickly. In fact, I’ve stopped myself from playing at times, because I know I need to save them up for future clan wars. But I don’t really like stopping myself from game play just for that. I’d rather be out and about capping away when I can without such strategizing getting in the way.

I also hope to see continued support of players in suboptimal climates by adding some flexibility to clan-war requirements (it’s already snowed in both Chicagoland and Calgary this year!). I am not saying that snow makes munzeeing impossible, but it can pose hurdles that may be hard to appreciate in Texas. 😉 I’m always eager to see more badges, it’s a fun additional component of the game. I’d be eager to see ones that reward expanded geographical exploration such as physical deploys in multiple countries/states/territories. Or how about a badge for having had X number of other players cap your virtual and/or physical Munzees? That would be a nice measure of reaching big parts of the community and would rely on data the site is already capturing. Oh, and a badge for lengthy capture streaks. I myself am at 160 days at the moment.

Tell us about yourself!
I am on the faculty at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, immediately north of Chicago. I teach both undergraduate and graduate students on topics ranging from research methods to digital media’s social implications. My research concerns how people use the Internet with a special focus on how skilled – or often not skilled – people are with using the Web. One of these days I hope to put together a class on GPS-based games. I think it would allow for the discussion of lots of important topics such as online communities, cooperation, gamification, how platform design influences/limits/encourages various types of behavior, and the link between the physical and the virtual. Munzee is a great example of all of this, of course.

TurtleFan-WisconsinBookwormGardensI love to travel. Some of my favorite destinations include the US Southwest especially the red rocks of Utah and Arizona, various corners of Switzerland, Paris and other parts of France, and the city where I grew up, Budapest. I can’t wait for the opportunity to return to Australia and also explore New Zealand. I very much enjoy meeting other Munzers when I travel and get in touch with locals when I can. I met some members of the Hummel Hummel clan during the summer, they were very friendly. I have also met up with members of various Hungarian clans while in Budapest. In fact, one of the Hungarian players, Sunboy, I have not only met in Budapest, but our first encounter was actually at an event in Sydney, Australia a couple of years ago. If anyone passes through Chicagoland, please get in touch.

Other hobbies include:
Presumably my user name gives away my favorite animal. Although I don’t have any live turtles (I used to as a child, but these days I travel too much for that), both my home and office are filled with all sorts of turtle objects, mainly thanks to gifts from friends. I have gotten back into painting in the past couple of years taking some classes again and even sold a piece recently.  I am a huge photo enthusiast and won a photo contest last year as well as this year, which has been super fun.  I am a big chocolate connoisseur and love to try local specialties whenever I travel.  Walking and exploration is a big hobby, which is why I make Munzee a part of all of my travels as well as my everydays at home.

This week we talked about:

  • Changes in the weather for our area and most of North America.
  • November MunzPak orders are still available through the end of the month.
  • Webisode #1 in A Tale of Trails  — follow us on YouTube — yes it’s supposed to be silly.  We are not trained actors or cinematographers.

On the videocast we also announced a new Munzee Photo Contest for our players!

We’re looking for some new promotional images for Munzee and who better than our players to help us with that? We need high-res photographs that embrace the heart of Munzee. Whether it’s wilderness of cityscapes, we want you to show us what you see when you Munzee. Please email all submissions to photocontest@munzee.com. We will take submissions through the end of the month. The photographer that is chosen will win a Munzee prize pack valued at $127.

If your photo is chosen you’ll get:

  • 5 virtuals
  • 5 mystery virtuals
  • 5 rubies
  • 5 diamonds
  • 2 hotels
  • 2 motels
  • 1 social

Although we will only choose one winner, there is a chance that other photos submitted could be used in future Munzee materials, so all submissions become property of Munzee Inc. upon email.

Photo Contest guidelines:

  • Photos should be of scenery and not focus on a single group of people or faces.
  • Should not include any previously trademarked brands or items.
  • All submissions must be owned by the photographer submitting them.
  • Munzee code of conduct still applies and all photos taken on/in private property must have written approval to be in the running.

High quality photos must be a minimum of
1600 x 700 pixels in size, with a 72 DPI, and can be either .jpg or .png file types.

Remember to join us Tuesdays at 1 pm (MHQ Time) for the live videocast where you can interact with us, ask questions and see us stumble over our words! To learn more follow us on Google + and if you missed last week’s videocast click HERE.
