Android Framework Issues

This post only applies to Android users, not iOS users.

There is a general issue with the new Google Play Services version that has been pushed to some Android devices lately. Google Play Services is the background framework on Android and is responsible for internal workings such as Google Maps. This issue has resulted in two errors in the Munzee app:

  1. White squares on the map
  2. Shifted pins on the map with correct proximity circles.

preview-full-2016-05-16 11.56.18

This issue does not affect all users, and pins on the deploy/pin placement map ARE NOT affected. If you notice the white square icon problem, you can try the refresh button or select that munzee to see the correct icon in the munzee details banner.

The issues have been reported to Google, and we hope an updated Google Play Services will be pushed out shortly.

Thank you for your understanding, and Munzee on!

Player of the Week: Cheryl Wright-Turner (eggbox27)

As Munzee has grown over the years, the game has evolved in so many more ways than any of the co-founders could have imagined. We’ve certainly had our fair share of growing pains, but in its essence Munzee has tried to stick to its core goal of getting people out into the world. No one knows this better than those players who have been with us since the beginning. This week’s Player of the Week is Cheryl Wright-Turner (eggbox27).

Me and PilseyWho are you?
Cheryl Wright-Turner

Where in the world do you live?
Norwich, Norfolk, UK

How long have you played Munzee?
I discovered it in September 2014 and went on a few hunts thru the Autumn and then really got into it from January 2015 and have been capping and deploying since.

How did you find Munzee?
I’ve absolutely no idea. I’m sure I saw a link somewhere and followed it and it went from there. At the time, I was on maternity leave with my youngest, and I have since used it as a good excuse to go out for a walk and get some fresh air.

What do you most enjoy about Munzee?
I love getting out and going for a walk about and finding munzees, although my pet hate is tree protector hides. I also enjoy seeing new areas and visiting new places. Events are a great way to meet new, like-minded people, and so far, I have been joint host for two with another in the planning stages. I have also managed to travel to a couple of events and hope to travel to some more in the future.

I love the fact that I have made some fantastic new friends, both for myself and my family. My youngest now has a girlfriend whom lives at the opposite end of our road whom we we met thru Munzee, and our clan members are all local players, so we help each other to meet our clan goals each month.

I met CoachV and PilseyGuy last summer at events and look forward to meeting more people over the coming year.

What is on your wish list?
To travel to McKinney, the home of Munzee, failing that Orlando, or anywhere in the states with large clusters of munzees. I have a trip to Cologne planned for later in the year so hopefully I should have fun capping there. I also wish my network provider increased their internet coverage in my local area as once out of the city coverage drops and there are some lovely areas locally I’d love to cap and deploy in which I struggle with using my current provider.

Fun with family & Friends

Tell us about yourself!
I’m married and blessed with 3 wonderful boys aged 9, 8 and 21 months whom often come out capping with me. The older two are great at running ahead and finding them whilst I catch up with the push chair. I’m sure in the future they will want their own accounts in the future.

The Mighty Norwich City Clan

I work part time in retail which I love, and am also a Beaver Scout Leader (the youngest section of Scouting in the UK) and a school governor, which enable me to put something back in the community. I met one of my best friends thru Scouting and she now munzees regularly with me.

I have lived in Norwich since I came here to study at university and haven’t left since. It is a beautiful and quiet corner of the country with a growing community of Munzeers and lots of Munzees. It is also close to the coast which I love to visit.

Other hobbies include:
Apart from Scouting and Munzeeing, I enjoy spending time with my husband and boys and going for days out..

Any last words?
I feel blessed to have been nominated, and look forward to growing the map, meeting more players and capping more Munzees!!!.

eggbox27 also included some socials, so cap away!

A Slight Delay in the UK

After a scary visit to Old Trafford, Rob and Matt found themselves in a bit of a pickle. Instead of flying back today (Monday, May 16th) as planned, they will be returning to the US on Wednesday, May 18th. That means Flat Robs will remain on the map through 23:59 MHQ time on Wednesday.

Munzee on!

Farewell to the Virtual…

…well, sort of. Many aspects of the gameplay in Munzee have grown and evolved, and it’s time for the Virtual Munzee to follow suit. Effective tomorrow at 10:00am MHQ time, the Virtual Munzee is being retired from sale. Virtual Munzees on the map or in your undeployed list will remain, and ALL will still be active in gameplay (current and future deploys).

Where one door closes, another opens. In that spirit, we’re proud to introduce the MVM.

AllColors

This is not the Mystery Virtual Munzee of the past. The MVM is a new type of virtual Munzee that combines the best of both the Mystery Virtual and the Virtual. It even has it’s own brand new icon! The point structure is as follows:

  • Deploy: 50 points
  • Capture: Split of 60 points in multiples of 5 with a minimum of 10 points (eg, 10, 15, 20, 25, etc)
  • CapOn: Split of 60 points in multiples of 5 with a minimum of 10 points (eg, 10, 15, 20, 25, etc)
  • EXAMPLE : If capper receives 20 points, Owner receives 40 points.

Other specifications of the MVM are:

  • ALL Color credits can be used (including those purchased in the past)
  • It can be captured using a Blast Cap
  • It can be deployed via Quick Deploy tool using the online map
  • It follows the same proximity rules as the Virtual Munzee – Deployed 50 feet from other players and 150 feet from your own.
  • It will have its own filter in the app separate from the Mystery Virtual and the Virtual Munzee

Over the next 24 hours, the app and website will be updated to include the MVM. Do not panic! 😉 Just get excited instead!

At 10:00 MHQ time tomorrow (Friday, May 13th), the MVM will be available in the Munzee Online Store. They will be $5 each and will remain a permanent fixture in the store. In other words, this is not a limited time offering so you don’t have to wake up at 3am in Australia. 😉 Also, for the first week of sale (10:00 MHQ time on May 13th through 10:00 MHQ time on May 20th ), every MVM purchase will also receive a free color credit. (ex. Buy 1 MVM, get 1 color credit. Buy 5 MVMs, get 5 color credits.)

Why are we doing this? We want to retire the virtual due to the point structure. The cap on points just weren’t enough, the same was true with the mystery virtual. You will still see and interact with the old virtuals and mystery virtuals in the game. It is time for the points to balance with the new style of play and increased points. In other words, we are bringing more value to the owner of the Munzee.

We hope you enjoy the MVM. Munzee on!

Player of the Week: Bert Carter (WE4NCS)

As Munzee has grown over the years, the game has evolved in so many more ways than any of the co-founders could have imagined. We’ve certainly had our fair share of growing pains, but in its essence Munzee has tried to stick to its core goal of getting people out into the world. No one knows this better than those players who have been with us since the beginning. This week’s Player of the Week is Bert Carter (WE4NCS).

image1Who are you?

My name is Bert Carter. My username is WE4NCS, and it is an actual FCC issued Amateur Radio callsign for the NC State University Alumni Amateur Radio Association. It stands for WE 4 NC State – my alma mater.

Where in the world do you live?
I live in Cary, North Carolina which is a large suburb of Raleigh, the capital city.

How long have you played Munzee?
Initially, my adventure with Munzee began with registration in October 2011, but I seriously began playing in June 2012. There were very few munzers and munzees in the area at the beginning, but Munzee activity took off locally in early 2014.

How did you find Munzee?
Munzee was discovered from comments being made on the forums of another GPS game. I initially signed up in October 2011, and my first Munzee was captured on a caching trip to Delaware in February 2012.

What do you most enjoy about Munzee?
There is more of a sense of community with Munzee across states and the world. The people I have met locally and in the clans and the interaction with the MHQ staff have been enjoyable. Munzee is constantly changing and these changes are usually interesting and challenging. Chasing the new icons, acquiring the new badges, and running after the Unicorns and Leprechauns is a plus. I am honored to be part of the FMH Super Chuckers – once of the consistently top performing clans.

What is on your wish list?
My wish list includes limits on the numbers of specials like Virtual Shamrocks and RMHs that can be purchased, and a limit on the number of blasts that can be purchased monthly. .

Tell us about yourself!
I have been married to Barbara for over 46 years. I  have two grown, married sons and three grandchildren that live locally. The grandchildren occasionally enjoy munzeeing.

Professionally, I am a registered electrical engineer – PE – and worked for Duke Energy for over 26 years and other engineering design firms for many years, essentially retiring at the end of 2015.image1 (1)

Other hobbies include:
One of my hobbies is amateur radio – my personal callsign has been WA4TLI since the early 1960s. I was a big DX chaser at the top of the DXCC Honor Roll. I traveled to over ten foreign countries on all of the continents to operate my radio equipment temporarily in DX contests. In the early 1990s, I traveled twice to Russia for five weeks as a guest of several Russian amateur radio operators.

Since 2012, I have been a cacher with over 36,000 finds in many states and several countries.

Any last words?
I want to acknowledge several Munzee friends that have made the experience so enjoyable: Judy – doggonefun, Marie and Tim – Hunniees and dt07751, my clanmates in FMH Superchuckers, Tony – tpainter, Carol – jafo43, Lee – lewatkin, Tammy – TheRealGigi. And a shoutout to Rob, Matt, and particularly Louise Gibson with MHQ for all that they do to make things work for all of us.

Going Green In March Fundraiser: Skylar

As we’ve mentioned before, the proceeds from our March fundraising efforts are being distributed between three entities. Last Friday, we were able to present the first donation on behalf of Munzee players worldwide to Skylar Conover – Ms. Wheelchair USA 2015.

Rob Vardeman and Skylar Conover after the presentation of the donation.

A check for $5000 was presented to Skylar by Team Munzee for the continuation of her duties as Ms. Wheelchair USA and the education of communities to raise awareness and acceptance for individuals with visible and invisible disabilities. We’re very proud to support Skylar and her cause. If you want to know more about Skylar and the work she does, you can Like her on Facebook.

We are also very proud and thankful of our wonderful community that is so supportive of fundraisers and causes like this. Information regarding the other two donations will be coming shortly. Thank you again, and Munzee on!

Munzee Online Store Update

Hey everybody!

We’ve added some features to the Munzee Online Store that you need to be aware of.

  1. Username Validation – The username field has been moved to the product page and is now validated to make sure that you get your products right away. When you add a product to your cart, the store checks your entered username against the database to determine if it is valid. If it is, the product is added to your cart. If it is not, an error message pops up. Screen Shot 2016-05-09 at 10.35.18 AMScreen Shot 2016-05-09 at 10.35.49 AM
  2. Multiple Users Per Purchase – We also now support the ability to check out with items for multiple users in one purchase. After adding an item to your cart for one person, just change the username and the item to the cart again. On the cart and check out pages, you will see the items for both users separately.Screen Shot 2016-05-09 at 10.36.16 AM Screen Shot 2016-05-09 at 10.36.37 AM

There a few things to note:

  • If you are logged in, your username will be filled out automatically. (If it isn’t, log out and log back in.)
  • You cannot change the username after the item has been added to your cart.
  • This will also work for WallaBee items. Make sure you put in the appropriate username for each item.
