Munzee Madness 5 Recap

Rob, Matt, and Robbie headed out West this past weekend to attend Munzee Madness 5 at Yorba Regional Park in (kinda) sunny California. They had a great time, and we want to share their experiences with everyone.

First, though, we want to thank and congratulate our wonderful reseller Elliot and his team for putting on the event. Their five events spanning two days went extremely well. The effort and passion they have for the game shone through and blew everyone away. We’d also like to thank all of the players who participated, both in person or by placing virtuals at the events. Points and badges were bountiful. Attendees for one of the Friday events received the Party Crasher Attendee badge while the main Saturday event earned attendees the Centurion Attendee badge. The huge turnouts at the events were wonderful to see.

On to our stories:

Friday

MM5 began Friday when Elliot hosted players at his shop as a preliminary meet and greet. They were invited to come hang out and hunt down the special icons in the surrounding area. At 5:30, we all packed up and headed over to Food Truck Fandango. Elliot and his team worked with a local food truck group that sets up every Friday night in a parking lot. Each food truck had a Munzee on it, so everyone, both Munzee players and the general public, were able to see what Munzee is about. Rob and Matt were shamefully beat in a game of Trouble by two teenagers. After a few hours of eating (way too much) amazing food and capping, everyone headed home for the night.

Saturday

Saturday began bright and early with a breakfast event. We all met up, ate, and capped some before heading to the main event. We all migrated to Yorba Regional Park for the real fun. Between capping and eating, Rob executed his Presidential duties of shaking hand and kissing babies (and/or scaring children 😉 ) while Matt and Robbie played Frisbee and other games with attendees. Robbie then integrated the first WallaBee event with Munzee. Everyone then switched gears to take pictures for the Eventzee portion of the day. We ended the event with prizes and some announcements from Rob. We couldn’t end their, of course, so we headed out to dinner at a local restaurant.

We overran Knowlwood down the street for some more great food and one-on-one interaction with players. Matt tested some new toys, and Rob reclaimed his gaming throne by beating everyone (including Matt) at air hockey. He was (and still is) very pleased with himself.

Sunday

Though the official MM5 events were over, Matt and Rob weren’t done quite yet. They took a drive out to the desert to revive some of first special icons ever to appear on the Munzee map. There are now 3 WaywardNation icons live on the map in the Southern California area.

Now you may be wondering why we wanted to share these things with you (other than you know we like to talk about ourselves). To us, attending events is very special. When we’re at the office, we really only get to see one side of Munzee. We’re constantly trying to come up with new ideas, improve the game, and generally make everything run smoothly. When we’re out at events or in the field, though, we get to experience what you do. We see what happens. We get to talk to players one-on-one and hear their experiences. We get to actually interact with the people that make this game so great. We don’t go to events for the attention or for pats on the back. We go because we appreciate everything you do and want to help your events in any way we can. So long story short, thank you. You are the ones who make this game so great, and everything we do, we do for you. #MunzeeOn

A Dozen Leprechauns Escaped!

We knew from the beginning that Leprechauns were mischievous. We thought we had them contained, but we were wrong. During the sale of them on Tuesday, it seems 12 of the Leprechauns escaped from our corral. Our team was on it, though, and recaptured them. We obviously want them to have a nice owner to go home to, so we’ve decided to give them away!

We’ll be holding a competition between 17:00 MHQ Time today (March 3rd) and 17:00 MHQ Time on Monday, March 7th. To be entered, you must earn a minimum 1700 points during this time span. From those who qualify, we will pick 12 winners randomly.

If you already have a Leprechaun, you are NOT eligible for this competition. We want to spread them out fairly to those who were unable to buy one. You ARE eligible if you already have a Unicorn, though.

Winners will be announced on Tuesday, March 8th at 10:00 here on the blog and on social media.

Good luck!

Player of the Week: Oliver Tausch

As Munzee has grown over the years, the game has evolved in so many more ways than any of the co-founders could have imagined. We’ve certainly had our fair share of growing pains, but in its essence Munzee has tried to stick to its core goal of getting people out into the world. No one knows this better than those players who have been with us since the beginning. This week’s Player of the Week is Oliver Tausch (tau).

with my son in Berlin 2Who are you?
I’m Oliver Tausch, but the Munzee community knows me as “tau”.

Where in the world do you live?
I live in Delbrueck, North Rhine-Westphalia, Good Old Germany, but my real Munzee homezone is Paderborn about 20km from my home.

How long have you played Munzee?
I signed up in July 2012.

How did you find Munzee?
I was on a job in Los Angeles with my coworker Piglett78. He already played a GPS-based game but got a hint from a friend to try out Munzee, so I did, too. On a Sunday, we had some free time and went to 1849’s homezone. It was the weekend H2OKLAN passed 100,000 points with a big event close by. It was unbelievable. I thought I would never get to 100k in my life. We were afraid of going to this event as we were absolute beginners. Piglett78 and I spent half a day on capping greenies. We searched for one for about an hour. A security person came by because we looked some kind of suspicious. We tried to explain what Munzee is all about, and finally we were allowed to continue our tour. At the end of the day, I reached the unbelievable amount of 175 points!! We felt like heroes and made it on the leaderboard the next day.

The next months, I deployed my first Munzees and found out that another player was living on the same street (PappaPad). I got in contact with him and some other players living in our area. When Clan Wars were introduced, we founded the “Team Delbrueck” Clan. Some time later, in October 2013, we won the battle with an all-time record of more than 800K points. In November, only one month later, Munzee launched the MVMs and our record was broken straight away. I wish Fitbit had been integrated at that time as we all probably reached the equivalent of several marathons that month to get that far. Capping was more or less reduced to physical codes those days. During this battle, we built up one of the biggest Mystery clusters in the world with more than 1200 physical Mysteries. It took us months of planning with lots of barbecues and beer to get it organized.

with my wife 2

What do you most enjoy about Munzee?
As I said, we started with only one clan. These days, I’m managing six clans with players from all over Germany and Switzerland. With every new battle, each player decides which level(s) he/she would like to go for, and I try to puzzle them into six teams. This give a high flexibility for everyone respecting the individual potential for each battle. We grew to a great community and most of the players have stayed with us for a very long time. Many of them I’ve met personally at events. I find this very exciting as their real faces always look differently than what you imagine is behind the Munzee name.

I love getting out and exploring cities all over the world “from a Munzee view”. Achieving the different battle levels pushes me forward. As I’ve spread my Munzees in many different countries, I like to see who caps them.

What is on your wish list?
The Clan Requirements should be published one or two days earlier. This would help people like me to manage their clans.

I would really like to see an official virtual garden in our Lippesee area. Nowadays, players from outside the big cities and Munzee hotspots need to travel a lot to get points and other advantages. In this case, people from big cities would need to come and visit us.

I also would like to see a virtual replacement of a physical munzee (special) which is in maintenance mode. As my munzees are spread all around the world, it is kind of hard to maintain. A virtual which adopts the type of the munzee in maintenance mode would be perfect.

Tell us about yourself!
Born in the “Summer of ’69”, I grew up and went to University of Paderborn. I have a beautiful wife and two kids, a thirteen-year-old daughter and a ten-year-old son. They both play Munzee, too, and my wife finally “got used to it”.

kids and me 2

I’m a Master (Dip. Ing.) of electrical engineering and Director of Electrical Engineering and IT in a mid-size company in Delbrueck. My job makes me travel around the world frequently to meet customers and visit our agencies. That’s why I like Rovers are part of the Munzee game. Instead of hanging out in hotel bars, I try to go out and Munzee.

Other hobbies include:
Some years ago I used to be a semi-professional soccer player. Now I just play for fun and concentrate on coaching my son’s soccer team. I like bicycling, hicking, and taking a break in the sauna. I’m very involved with
with my daughter carnival (well, my whole family is) which is very popular in the area I live in.

Any last words?
I really feel honored to be a POTW, now and say THANK YOU to everyone who was involved in my nomination. “Team Delbrueck and friends”, you are fantastic guys, and it’s a pleasure to play with you day after day! Hope we stick together for a long time and still “fight” many battles!

tau also included some socials, so cap away!

Going Green in March!

If you haven’t noticed, we really like the color green. That makes March a pretty good month for us to paint the map green. Along with the Leprechaun’s announced earlier in the week, we’ll also be launching two types of Shamrocks on March 1st.

Shamrock Munzees

In our search for new Mythological Munzees, we discovered the Shamrock Munzee. Like greenies, the Shamrock Munzees attract the Mythologocial Munzees. Unicorns use them as food, and Leprechaun’s use them toFourLeafClover_128 hide. They are, in fact, 17% more likely to attract a Mythological Munzee than a greenie is. So, we’ve decided to share them with everyone.

The Shamrock will be worth 17 Capture, Deploy, and CapOn points. These are a new size of skinned, physical munzees. The QR code is the size of the Mini Mysteries, and the full sticker is roughly the size of two Mini Mystery stickers. They will be subject to normal proximity rules.

Shamrock Munzees will be in the store from 10:00 MHQ Time on March 1st through 23:59 MHQ Time on March 17th. After then, they will become MunzPak and special release munzees. THEY WILL BE A PERMANENT FIXTURE ON THE MUNZEE MAP. They will be sold in strips of 10 for $10.

Virtual Shamrocks

The Virtual Shamrock is a limited time special. They will be worth 34 points for Capture, Deploy, and CapOn. They also abide by normal proximity rules.ThreeLeafClover_128

Virtual Shamrocks will be in the store during the same times (10:00 MHQ Time, March 1st through 23:59 MHQ Time, March 17th). They will stay on the map through April 10th. Virtual Shamrocks will be sold in packs of 4 for $5.

Proceeds from the sales of Shamrocks, Virtual Shamrocks, and Leprechauns will benefit Muscular Dystrophy organizations and events, including the Muscular Dystrophy Association. We will be releasing more information about all of the charities soon.

Leprechauns

As a reminder, Leprechauns will be available as well. For the first six hours (10:00-15:59 MHQ time), only those who DO NOT have a Unicorn will be able to purchase a Leprechaun. At 16:00 MHQ time, the remaining Leprechauns will be available to everyone, including those who do own a Unicorn. There will be a limit of 1 Leprechaun per person. If you attempt to purchase more than one, your account WILL NOT be credited and NO REFUNDS will be given. If this does happen, the money will go straight to the donation amount.
