MHQ Lone Star Bash Update

Updated with more information in FAQ and some edited details. (7/15)

Due to unforeseen circumstances, we’ve had to alter the schedule for Lone Star Bash. Saturday morning and Sunday are unaffected. Friday night and Saturday night have been switched.

If you have already purchased a package and need to have it altered, please email Matt at matt@munzee.com, and he will work with you to get your order sorted out.

Please see the updated schedule below.

Friday, October 7th

  • Registration (1-3 PM): Friday afternoon will start off with registration at MHQ. You can pick up your packages before the big events start. If you won’t be arriving until later in the day or weekend, we will have the remaining registration on Saturday morning.
  • Lone Star Bash Kickoff at the State Fair (5 PM): What better way to kick off a day of fun than to visit The State Fair of Texas! We’ll be riding the train down to the State Fair and spending the evening exploring what it has to offer. Join the State Fair themed Eventzee hunt to really get a taste of Texas!

Saturday, October 8th

  • Lone Star Bash Games (9 AM): The fun continues on Saturday morning at Gabe Nesbitt Park in McKinney, Texas. There will be plenty of room to cap and deploy while having fun and playing Texas-themed Eventzee games.
  • Lone Star Bash at TUPPs (6 PM): We’ll have a nice hang-out evening at TUPPs brewery once again with food catered by Green Pin Kitchen. This will work as a meet and greet with the MHQ staff (the entire global team will be here!) and other players from around the world.

Sunday, October 9th

  • Lone Star Dash (8 AM): With all of our talk about fitness, we’ve decided to integrate it into our event. We’ll be hosting a 3K Fun Run (complete with runner’s bibs and medals) to finish off the weekend! Dress in a TX themed costume for a chance to win a prize! After the 3K, we will have breakfast and a send off event for everyone.

A list of events with links to the Munzee Calendar can be found here.

Birthday Parties Update

It’s hard to believe that it is already June! We’re gearing up for our Birthday Month, and Louise has been extremely busy working with event hosts. We’ve got 56 Birthday Parties planned worldwide during the month of July, so you have plenty to choose from if you want to attend one. You’ve still got time to get one on the calendar if you want to host your own, too. If you want more information, please email louise@munzee.com, and she can get you sorted out!

Trish has been working on some amazing artwork for individual events, and the Attendee and Host badges are looking great. Louise can’t wait to show them off to everyone. However, great artwork takes time. We will be implementing a cut-off date for custom artwork. All fully customized artwork requests must be submitted by this Friday, June 10th. After that, only generic badges will be offered. Don’t miss out!

Thank you everyone for your support and for growing the map! Munzee on!

Player of the Week: Mike Adel (LedaEkim)

As Munzee has grown over the years, the game has evolved in so many more ways than any of the co-founders could have imagined. We’ve certainly had our fair share of growing pains, but in its essence Munzee has tried to stick to its core goal of getting people out into the world. No one knows this better than those players who have been with us since the beginning. This week’s Player of the Week is Mike Adel (LedaEkim).

VA Beach in WinterWho are you?

My name is Mike Adel, LedaEkim in the Munzee world… creative, right? 😉

Where in the world do you live?
Fredericksburg, VA in the good ole US of A. (About 50 miles south of Washington, DC)

How long have you played Munzee?
I first signed up November 9, 2013 on a family trip to Michigan, capping some there and at rest stops on the highway on the drive back to Virginia. It was several months later that I started playing more “hard core”.

How did you find Munzee?
I heard about it through discussions with some cacher friends at the time. It struck me as something simple and fun that everyone in the family could do, and once I looked it up, it turned out to be just that!!

MMM-HC Outing

What do you most enjoy about Munzee?
I really enjoy the multiple ways to play. There really is something for everyone. From walks around shopping centers to huge virtual fields in major cities to trail walks in the woods. No matter your pleasure, you can find a way to play the game. It is also easy enough for everyone in the family to enjoy. My three girls (11, 8, and 7 years old) all play, with the oldest being the most into it. She will ask every month what she can deploy to help me with the clan goals for the month. 🙂 My wife will also play on occasion when we are out with the kids. It really is a family game.

The Clan Wars (and the friends I’ve made through them) are also something I highly enjoy. I have been with the Maryland Munzee Militia for quite some time now, and the core group of locals really is like a second family. Our get togethers are always a blast, be it out capping/deploying or at an event completing an Eventzee hunt, it is a guaranteed good time!!

Meeting folks at events from all over the country is also great fun. From New York to Kentucky to California and Missouri, and even overseas and beyond. The community is always great, and putting faces to Munzee names is always great.

What is on your wish list?
The return of the bomb icons on the map when blast capping to show which munzees are being processed by the blast so you can continue to hand cap without worrying about grabbing some that are in the process of being blasted!

The charity side of Munzee is huge, and along with that comes the charity (temporary) virtuals. I would like to see special blast captures during those charity times that would only capture the charity virtuals with, of course, money from those special blasts going to the stated charity. 🙂

MORE SPECIAL ICONS!!! Ok, so we have a ton, and there are always new ones coming out… but hey, there can never be too many!!

Tell us about yourself!
About myself… let’s see. I’m 36 years old, married with three awesome (read: annoying) daughters. I am a federal contractor, working with HF Radio systems. My job takes me pretty much anywhere in the country, so Munzee fits in nicely with my traveling. My wife (of 11 years) runs a coffee shop, so she keeps the caffeine flowing when I need to make a midnight run up to DC to cap. Aside from work, the kids keep up both busy with their school activities, so it’s never a boring day, that’s for sure!!

The family

Other hobbies include:
With three young kids, there isn’t much spare time.. at least not spare time that I don’t spend playing Munzee.. But we recently moved, and when we did, I decided that we were going to start putting on a huge Christmas lights display each year. You know, those musical dancing light insanity type things you see on YouTube? So, I’ve started dabbling in programming light shows and have even started stringing lights on fixtures for Halloween and Christmas. Give me five years before you see us on The Great Holiday Light Fight on TV. 😉

Hearts in DC event - Supreme Court at night

Any last words?
Munzee really is for everyone. Play it the way you enjoy, and don’t worry about how others play. That’s how you get the most enjoyment out of it. Give a shout if you are passing along I-95 in Virginia!! Grow the map!!

LedaEkim also included some socials, so cap away!

Beware the Fire…Mystery Munzee

Rob: Yote… Yote… YOTE!!!

Yote: Yes, sir. Mr. Imperial Leader, SIR!

Rob: What are you doing, Yote?

Yote: Munzeeing, of course, Imperial Leader!

Rob: Good to hear, Yote! We have a surprise for you.

Yote: A surprise?! Am I finally getting the Yote Munzee?!?!?!

Rob: Not quite, but close. We’re putting The Yote on some badges for a new Munzee type.

Yote: Badges?? A new Munzee?? Tell me more SIR!

Rob: It’s all below in the blog post, Yote. Thank you for all that you do.

Yote: Thank you, Mr. Imperial Leader!! I’m so money!!! YOTE

Ah, Yote and The Imperial Leader… Well, Rob is correct. We have a new Munzee type coming out. This Munzee is a Reseller Exclusive so you will only be able to purchase them from our Authorized Resellers. They will be released for sale on June 1 at 00:01 MHQ (CST). Matt and Rob alluded to it on this past Friday’s videocast, so without any further ado, we’re proud to introduce the Fire Mystery Munzee!

FireMystery
Let’s start with the basics:

Name: Fire Mystery Munzee

Points:
Deploy: 50
Capture/CapOn: Split of 60 by multiples of 5 with a minimum of 10 (eg, 10, 15, 35, 40, etc)  — Example: capture = 25, cap on = 35.

The Twist(s):
When captured, the Fire Mystery lights three (3) fires within 1 mile on greenies. These will burn for two hours or until capped.

FireMysterySpreadCapping these fires results in two possible outcomes:

  1. There is an 80% chance that the fire will extinguish. For putting out the fire, you will receive 50 points for capture, and the owner of the host greenie will earn 10 points.
  2. The other 20% is a little more dangerous. These fires can also burn you. If you get burned, you will LOSE 5 (-5) points. (The owner of the host greenie will still earn 10 points). It’s a choice of risk versus reward. As the saying goes, if you play with fire you might get burned.

Badges:
Upon release of the Fire Mystery, we will also have three badge lines: Capping the Fire Mystery Munzees, Deploying Fire Mystery Munzees, and “Getting Burned”.

This is where Yote comes in. While we don’t want to go into too much detail of his personal life, he is a frontline firefighter in California who specializes in wildfires. He has very graciously allowed us to use his Yote likeness in the badges. We would like to thank him for that, and even more importantly, everything he does.

Capping the Fire Mystery

  1. Capture 1 Fire Mystery Munzee
  2. Capture 100 Fire Mystery Munzees
  3. Capture 250 Fire Mystery Munzees

“Getting Burned”

  1. Get burned 1 time
  2. Get burned 25 times
  3. Get burned 100 times

Deploying the Fire Mystery

  1. Deploy 1 Fire Mystery Munzee
  2. Deploy 5 Fire Mystery Munzees

We also want to take this opportunity to provide help to our friends to the north. If you haven’t heard, Canada is experiencing terrible wildfires right now. Team Munzee is making a donation to the Canadian Red Cross on behalf of the Munzee Resellers to help those affected by these fires.

If you would like to donate as well, please visit www.redcross.ca. The Government of Canada is matching all individual donations, and they could use all the help they can get.

The Munzee app and website will be updated over the next day to reflect the introduction of the Fire Mystery.

We hope you enjoy the new Fire Mystery Munzee. Try not to get burned too often! 😉

Munzee on!

Rock.. Paper… Scissors… Go!

At the end of 2016, we asked for submissions for the “Make Us A Munzee” competition and then held a final round of voting to choose a winner. In the end, 2dld26 (Deidre Dunhom) came out on top with the Rock-Paper-Scissors Munzee! Since then, we’ve been working with her on everything from points and description, to design, and even to testing. Now, we’re ready to release the RPS Munzee to the public!

RPS_128 (1)

Description

The RPS Munzee is a credit item for greenies. When it is captured, the player is given the choice between Rock, Paper, Scissors, or Random and plays against the computer. Capture points are determined by the outcome of the game.

As a refresher:

  • Rock beats Scissors
  • Scissors beats Paper
  • Paper beats Rock

The RPS is deployed in-app like other credit items. It has the same proximity rules as greenies.

Points

Deploy: 15

Capture/CapOn: Split of 30

  • Computer Wins: 10 points for Capper, 20 points for Deployer
  • Capper Wins: 20 points for Capper, 10 points for Deployer
  • Tie: 15 points for both Capper and Deployer

How do I get one?

The RPS Munzee will be a MunzPak exclusive for the month of June. Each subscriber will receive six (6) in the June MunzPak. Remember your MunzPak subscription renews monthly on your charging date until you cancel. If you would like to start on June 1st also keep in mind the system runs on Central Standard Time (MHQ). Starting July 1st, they will be available in the Munzee Store. More information on that, and a reminder, will come towards the end of June.

The app and website will be updated over the next days to reflect the introduction of the RPS Munzee.

Once again, thank you everyone who participated in the “Make Us a Munzee” competition, and congratulations to 2dld26 for being chosen as the winner! We hope everyone enjoys the RPS Munzee.

Ready to play? Rock… Paper… Scissors… GO! Munzee on!

Player of the Week: Mette and Lars Kristensen (MeLa)

As Munzee has grown over the years, the game has evolved in so many more ways than any of the co-founders could have imagined. We’ve certainly had our fair share of growing pains, but in its essence Munzee has tried to stick to its core goal of getting people out into the world. No one knows this better than those players who have been with us since the beginning. This week’s Player of the Week is Mette and Lars Kristensen (MeLa).

Photo-Lars-and-girls
Who are you?

Mette and Lars Kristensen, aka MeLa.

Where in the world do you live?
In the village Harlev, just outside of Aarhus, the second largest city in Denmark.

How long have you played Munzee?
Since May 2013. We started up slowly with a few captures and deploys, but we got addicted after joining our first Clan battle in  June 2014.

How did you find Munzee?
We had been caching for several years but had almost stopped completely after adding two little girls to the family. Munzee was mentioned in a caching forum, and it had to be tried out. It quickly proved much easier to grab some Munzees without doing a lot of planning up front.

Photo-local-event

What do you most enjoy about Munzee?
We both really like the social aspects of the game. After joining a clan of local players (Jutlandia), we have met a lot of great people. We enjoy going to events and more informal meetings, too.

It’s also great interacting with players all around the world. Mette does a lot of social trading, and we are both in several Munzee-related groups on Facebook.

We also really enjoy chasing down the bouncing specials, Mythological as well as seasonal. It’s a great addition to the game.

Finally, the fundraisers! We think it’s great when Munzee does charity fundraisers. Do a bit of good AND make points – what’s not to like?

What is on your wish list?
Some day we would love to be able to travel abroad to a big event like MHQ Bash or Munzee Madness. And to a lot of a clusters around the world.

It would be great if the deploy process for physical munzees could be changed a bit such that the munzee wouldn’t actually be deployed until after naming it, adjusting for position, and optionally converting it. Among other reasons, it would make it possible to back out of a deploy if it turns out you can’t convert it to what you wanted.Photo-Lars-capping-with-the-girls

Oh, and more badges! There can never be too many badges.

Finally, we wish that we hadn’t forgotten to capture a munzee on day 300 in our capture streak.

Tell us about yourself!
We have a combined age of 78 years and originate from different parts of Denmark. We met 11 years ago while working as volunteers, raising funds for the Danish Muscular Dystrophy Association. Together, we have two girls, Maja (5) and Ida (3), and a dog.

Lars says: You can call me a geek, and I won’t be offended. I work as a software developer, currently within the health IT industry, building software for hospitals. Some of my spare time is spent developing and maintaining the MunzStat app (Android only, sorry Apple fans). I really enjoy being able to contribute to the Munzee community while having fun and learning a lot in the process.

Mette says: I’m a socialholic. There, I said it. Searching for socials I haven’t captured yet is fun and time consuming. But I like collecting stuff. I hope there will be a badge for 10,000 socials when I get there. Just around 3,000 to go. I wish capturing a social awarded you with just one point, then more people would probably get into socials.

Photo-Lars-lamppost-capping

Other hobbies include:
Lars: I play electric guitar in a local rock music cover band which is great fun!

Mette: Does Eventzee count as a hobby? (Editor’s Note: Dylan says yes, yes it does.)

Any last words?
To anyone involved in our nomination, thank you! This wouldn’t have happened had it not been for MunzStat. Thanks for all of the positive feedback. It really means a lot and keeps up the motivation. Also, thank you Scott Foster and Daniel Fischer for your help and support.

MeLa also included some socials, so cap away!
