Event Spotlight: Birmingham, Alabama – April Fool’s Lunch

While Munzee can certainly be a solo game if you choose, there’s no denying the appeal in meeting others who share your interests. Munzee Events are perhaps the best example of this, as they allow you to meet both old and new players in a safe, friendly environment. On top of that, there are usually activities, games, and — if you’re lucky — goodie bags! That being said, planning events requires a considerable amount of effort. So, to make it easier for prospective hosts (and maybe even recurring hosts), we decided to put the spotlight on past events, Munzee-Toolkit style! We hope this series of posts will inspire you to try hosting an event if you never have before, or provide you with ideas to spice up future events if you’re an old hand at it!

Today we’re featuring the Birmingham, Alabama – April Fool’s Lunch, which took place on April 5, 2019 at The Purple Onion in Birmingham, AL and was hosted by giber54, Mdeezy, Robelwilson, and timandweze.

Give us a brief summary about your event!

Every month in Birmingham we have a CoExist lunch (Munzee and Geocaching) on a Friday. These monthly events have helped us introduce many new players to Munzee and helped build a strong Munzee community in Alabama.

What tips do you have when hosting an awesome event?

  1. Always have your friends cohost with you- It just makes it more fun!
  2. Always publicize your events. Not everyone looks at the calendar regularly. Sharing about your events on Social Media is a great way to get the word out.
  3. Make sure your event location has seating and a table or two. It makes it easier for attendees to chitchat and scan each other’s personals.
  4. Consider creating a Virtual Garden at your event location. More Munzees to cap is a good thing! ?

What made your event unique?

Usually at our Friday lunch events we have only locals. This event was attended by players from all over the country. This was also CoachV’s first time ever attending an event in Alabama. Also the Space Coast Geo-Store was there vending. There was also a free prize raffle for both the Munzee and Geocaching events.

On Friday, April 17th- there will be 2 “Fall Into Spring” Events in Birmingham, Alabama.

A CoExist lunch and there will also be a special challenge event.

Heartbreakers

Like the Aussie Animals, these Heartbreakers are temporary POBs. Unlike Aussie Animals, they bounce to either physical or virtual munzees, depending on the MunzPak you purchased. They will stay on the map until 23:59 MHQ on March 31, when they will be automatically archived on your account. If you’ve ever deployed a Butterfly or Frog Evolution munzee, these will behave similarly with a few exceptions.

You can access Heartbreakers under the “Only Expiring Specials” filter.

All players who purchase a MunzPak (which will automatically deploy the respective Heartbreaker) will also receive the respective deploy badge shown below:

Additionally, there will be three badges anyone can earn based on number of captures of Heartbreaker specials. But just how many captures it takes to earn all 3 badges will be kept a secret! However, we will reveal the first badge in the line, which appears as follows:

Love At First Sight- Capture 1 Heartbreaker Munzee of any type.

Remember these temporary POBs will only be available for capture until the end of March, so cap as many as you can and keep them bouncing!

January 2020 GOTM Winners!

January is usually a slow month since we’re catching up on tasks left from the previous year on top of planning for the new year. However, January 2020 has been anything but slow! We kicked off the year with our new 20/20 Specials, contributed to Australian relief efforts with 3 new official gardens and Aussie Animals, and launched a new app update, among many other things! That being said, we aren’t too busy to keep up with a little gardening! We are happy to announce the winners of the January Garden of the Month (GOTM), give one last reminder for January Player of the Month (POTM), and announce the criteria for February POTM! The badges for January GOTM and POTM will be awarded in early February, but we couldn’t wait to share the winners we’ve chosen!

January GOTM

This month, we chose gardens that put us in a positive mood just by looking at them! Remember that all winning GOTM organizers and all players who deployed in the winning gardens will be awarded special badges for their contribution to growing the map. This month we’re happy to award the Helsinki colour Garden, designed by Jesnou, Sivontim, Mandello & Neesu, and the Smile Garden, designed by Whatsoverthere, as our winning January GOTM! This garden was completed just in time for the Happy Holidays Buddy! event, which our very own Daniel Hammock attended!

Rules for GOTM nominations:

  1. Garden must feature non-licensed character designs.
  2. The garden must feature a Garden Places Pin.
  3. The garden must be built using a publicly available spreadsheet which we will ask to be locked after being 100% deployed.
  4. We’re asking for ongoing nominations and we will release the winners throughout the year.

January POTM’s requirements called for nominations of Munzee Weather Warriors, aka Munzee Foul-Weather Players. We are seriously impressed by the dedication all the nominees have shown!

All players who have been nominated will receive the following POTM badge. If some deserving players have just popped in your head, you still have one day left! E-mail those nominations to iloveyou@munzee.com! You can expect to see the badge in early February.

February POTM Requirements

For February’s POTM we want you all to nominate players who are often paired up. We’re looking for Munzee Power Couples! These pairs don’t have to be romantically involved — friend pairs are just as qualified! These players are practically joined at the hip and are always considerate of each others’ goals (“Have you capped the Alternamyth that just popped up?” or “See if you can use a blast here!”). The players that play together stay together (and Munzee On!) so we want to spread the love!

As in the previous months, this unique POTM badge is eligible for any player to earn regardless of previous wins. The badge will appear as follows:

It’s almost February! You’ll find all the details to our clan requirements and rewards in the clan section of our app. We’ve made a few format changes since we’re able to handle requirements and rewards in a new way through the app. We hope you like it as we’ll continue to move gameplay forward in many ways in 2020. We’re keeping in mind that not all clans will have 10 members now and also making the competition more open amongst the levels. This month you’ll notice jewels have a starring role. February Badges

Your Clan can earn monthly badges to earn for reaching distinct levels of Clan Wars each month. You won’t be able to earn a badge until the entire clan has reached the specified level. Since there is a hidden Level X this month, there will be the chance to earn a total of 6 badges in February. The first badge will appear as follows:

Novice Newbies: February 2020- Reached Level 1 in February 2020 Clan Wars

Overall Clan Notes:

POB includes all Player Owned Bouncers

  • All Myths

MHQ is Throwing Out Some Boomerang Bouncers!

If you thought the Aussie Animals were the only Australian-themed bouncers you were going to get, guess again! These bouncers are both beautiful and potentially deadly — you may recall that boomerangs were originally used by Australian Aboriginal tribes as hunting weapons! Please exercise extreme caution as you make your approach — we make no guarantees on our aim!

Boomerang Details

We have six designs of bouncing MOB specials (3 virtual, 3 physical) flying around the world from now all the way until February 9 at 23:59 MHQ time! These wooden wonders land on Greenies and Virtuals respectively, but both also land on their corresponding Elemental Munzees as well! Virtual Boomerangs will land on Air Mystery Munzees and physical Boomerangs will land on Earth Mystery Munzees. The specials will bounce every 6 hours or when captured. 756 of these specials have been released (126 of each type) for plenty of capping opportunities!

The physical specials will be attracted to Munzee Magnets on Greenies, while the virtual specials will be attracted to Virtual Magnets on Virts. To access these specials, please turn on your “All Expiring Specials” and “All Limited Edition Specials” filters.

Physical Specials

The physical specials include the Root Runner Boomerang, the Country Crawler Boomerang, and the Great Dividing Boomerang. These physical bouncers will land on the following:

  • Greenies
  • Earth Mystery Munzees

The physical bouncing specials will all be worth 261 points for the Capture and 75 points for the Host.

Virtual Specials

The virtual specials include the Parting Sea Boomerang, the Sunsetter Boomerang, and the Coral Catcher Boomerang. These virtual bouncers will land on the following:

  • All colors of Virtual Munzees
  • Air Mystery Munzees

These virtual bouncing specials will all be worth 126 points for the Capture and 75 points for the Host.

Badges

Additionally, there will be three badges to earn based on number of captures of Boomerang specials. Similar to our Aussie Animals, the artwork for these badges is based on items from our sister app WallaBee! This month has unexpectedly shifted focus for us at MHQ. Awesome Aussie Animals Continue the Fundraising!

In our effort to raise funds for Australia Relief, we announced the creation of 3 new virtual gardens earlier in the week. The gardens sold out much faster than we had expected, which shows how ready and willing our community is to contribute to this cause! For those who were unable to purchase garden pins, we are proud to announce another opportunity for you with a new offering!

These ALL NEW Temporary Player Owned Bouncers (POBs) are adorable Aussie Animals and they’re on sale NOW in the Freeze Tag Online Store! A portion of the proceeds from this sale will also be added to our Australia Relief donation, so thank you all for supporting this great cause!

Like Pouch Creatures, Aussie Animals are based on items from our sister app, WallaBee, and represent a new era of munzees to enjoy! Temporary POBs work much like regular POBs, but they’re only on the map for a limited amount of time.  There are two types of Aussie Animals, the Kangaroo and Koala, and since these munzees won’t be around forever they have a smaller purchase price of $5 each. Aussie Animals will be available for multi-capture. That means players can capture a Kangaroo and Koala on their own munzees, any previously captured munzees, and more than once if the same Aussie Animal visits you. However, Aussie Animals will be non-blastable. They will be attracted to Physical Magnets on Greenies and Virtual Magnets on White and Blue-toned Virtual Munzees. You can access Aussie Animals under the “Only Expiring Specials” filter.

All players who purchase a Kangaroo Aussie Animal or a Koala Aussie Animal will receive the respective deploy badge shown below:

Additionally, there will be three badges to earn based on number of captures of Aussie Animals specials. But just how many captures it takes to earn all 3 badges will be kept a secret! However, we will reveal the first badge in the line, which appears as follows:

Jumping Joeys – Capture 1 Aussie Animal Munzee of any type.

Remember these temporary POBs will only be available for capture until the end of April, so cap as many as you can and keep them bouncing!

Help Our Friends Down Under With The Australia Relief Virtual Garden!

UPDATE 1/15/2020:

All the Kangaroo Garden in Adelaide, the Koala Garden in Melbourne, and the Wombat Garden in Sydney are all SOLD OUT. Thank you all for your support! 

We have also updated the donation locations to better match the areas of the gardens. The funds raised from the Melbourne Koala Garden will actually be sent to the Country Fire Authority (CFA) and the funds raised from the new Sydney Wombat Garden will be sent to the NSW Rural Fire Service. The gardens are the same size so there is no difference in donation amount assuming all are sold. Apologies for the confusion on our part!

Last week we announced some special guests were attending the upcoming Australia Day events Down Under, but we also mentioned some possible opportunities to support those affected by the wildfires. We’ve probably all watched the destruction taking place in Australia from the wildfires and we wanted to help in some way.

One virtual munzee will automatically be deployed in the Sydney Garden after it has been purchased. 30% of the proceeds from this item will support emergency relief efforts through a donation to the The NSW Rural Fire Service. Event Spotlight: FL Suncoast Event III

While Munzee can certainly be a solo game if you choose, there’s no denying the appeal in meeting others who share your interests. Munzee Events are perhaps the best example of this, as they allow you to meet both old and new players in a safe, friendly environment. On top of that, there are usually activities, games, and — if you’re lucky — goodie bags! That being said, planning events requires a considerable amount of effort. So, to make it easier for prospective hosts (and maybe even recurring hosts), we decided to put the spotlight on past events, Munzee-Toolkit style! We hope this series of posts will inspire you to try hosting an event if you never have before, or provide you with ideas to spice up future events if you’re an old hand at it!

Today we’re featuring the FL Suncoast Event III, which took place on January 14, 2017 at Medard Park in Plant City, FL and was hosted by hunniees, dt07751, Jafo43, and EagleDadandXenia.

Give us a brief summary about your event!

The Suncoast Event is held in the Florida Munzee belt in central Florida and is the largest munzee event held in the US, not associated with Geowoodstock or Freeze Tag. The Suncoast event is actually a series of Munzee events held throughout the weekend in various locations throughout Florida’s Suncoast. While these events are held over the holiday weekend in January, we can guarantee the location sites are always snow free. :-).

We have a team of hosts who make this event possible so that we may provide a lunch of walking tacos, donuts, and sweet treats for our attendees and give away prizes to registrants without charge.

We try to provide a weekend filled with fun, Munzee, badges, icons, and a game or two of Eventzee. Our attendees also are provided with a map of Florida gardens (goo.gl/tikFn3) to help our guests maximize their points over the weekend.

What tips do you have when hosting an awesome event?

(1) Have your events and Eventzee go live before your event begins. This will allow you time to assure everything is working properly and resolve any issues identified before all your attendees arrive.

(2) Identify a great group of hosts who are willing to work together to assure success.

(3) Keep it simple. If you try to do too much, your attendees won’t have time to chat or enjoy the event.

(4) Have fun!

What made your event unique?

Our event is held in a great snow-free location in Florida with access to millions of munzee points. While the food and prizes stay the same, we try to vary the event sites and offer new gardens for capping each year.
