Post from the Prez

Howdy everyone! I want to take a minute to let you know about a few things in the works here at MHQ. We are excited about July and the things ahead in the next few months.

First, a heartfelt thanks to those of you who joined us in Denver for our birthday celebration. Geowoodstock and the surrounding events were amazing. It was great to see over 2000 like-minded people enjoy geo-games in the same place. Those in attendance were the first to earn the “Shindig” badge for 150+ attendees at a single event. I made some great memories with old friends and new. I witnessed a beautiful sunrise at Red Rocks and played frisbee while enjoying a sunset at Clement Park. In between, I walked countless miles and loved seeing the countless smiles on the faces of each player I interacted with. So again, thank you for joining us.

Next, the team is very excited about the number of birthday party events going on around the world during this month. July is important to us because it is the month we celebrate our birthday, and this year WE ARE FIVE! We wish we could attend every event, but it’s just not possible so we’ve sent Flat Rob instead. Please check the calendar for events near you! *Behind the scenes info: the calendar is currently getting a makeover and we know you are going to love it!

Additionally, this year we are working hard to build the Munzee community globally. We are using resources to spread the word about Munzee and see that you are clearly doing the same. Throughout this process we continue to improve communication with brand new players. If you notice any in your area we encourage you to reach out to them via messenger and offer support as needed. This will encourage them to join you and grow the map!

Finally, as part of our community building we are also working hard to refresh the game. We may be five, but sadly some of our early players are no longer active. In June we activated the “recycle” icon, with much great feedback about how it helped your local area. While this won’t remain a permanent fixture you can rest assured this wasn’t the only time you will see this icon. In that line, we are also introducing two new titles into the game. Players who have not captured or deployed in the last 180 days will be given a “dormant” title. Players who have not captured or deployed in the last 365 days will be given an “inactive” title. These titles will be checked and updated daily, so a player can remove the title by simply capping or deploying again. While a player account has either of these titles it will change several rules for their account. The first being a faster archival process for physical munzees they have deployed. If a physical munzee owned by one of these accounts has TWO “Needs Repair” or “Unable to Locate” journal entries added it will automatically archive the Munzee. This is only step one in our efforts to refresh the map based on older “inactive” accounts. We will always leave the account open for players to return, but want to keep things fresh for new players. Stay tuned for more info on the next step soon.

As always, we truly appreciate each of you and know our community is what makes Munzee what it is. We are the 21st Century Scavenger Hunt only because you play and you spread your love for the game. Keep doing what you do to build the community, and we will do our very best to give you every tool you need to keep it fresh and fun! See you down the road! Player of the Week: Mark Case (markcase)

As Munzee has grown over the years, the game has evolved in so many more ways than any of the co-founders could have imagined. We’ve certainly had our fair share of growing pains, but in its essence Munzee has tried to stick to its core goal of getting people out into the world. No one knows this better than those players who have been with us since the beginning. This week’s Player of the Week is Mark Case (markcase).

Rob Vardeman (Munzee)Who are you?

Mark Case, player name: markcase (yea, real original, I know).

Where in the world do you live?
In a little corner of the southeast section of the North American continent in a small, out of the way section of North Carolina. If you follow NASCAR, then you might have hear of our home town legend: RIchard Petty. I live 1/2 mile from him.

How long have you played Munzee?
Actually, I signed up in the first year. When I looked at the map, I saw one munzee as far as I could zoom out. Went to look for it and could never find it.

How did you find Munzee?
I played on occasion with Ranger Fox when he would find one when we were playing another GPS game, I would scan it. I went with Ranger Fox on a trip to Nevada to sign containers on one of the largest runs in the world. Hans415 was our host. He showed us Munzee again, gave us some to deploy, and we did. That following December, I found one of the QR codes he gave me in my wallet and decided to look at the map again, and WOW! Someone deployed some nearby! I started to play again. Since my family would go looking for containers, they went with me to scan QR codes. That’s how the family got going.

Reed Timmer and Mark Case

What do you most enjoy about Munzee?
It is fun. It is easy. When I show others how to play this and other location based games, 9 out of 10 times they like Munzee better. It is easy to get people together and have cap and deploy parties.

What is on your wish list?
Actually, three things: 1) Be where a Flat Rob garden is WHEN they are on the map! 2) Cap an Emerald Garden. 3) Visit MHQ

Tell us about yourself!
I am a Boy Scout Eagle Scout from 1978. My three sons are all Eagle Scouts as well. I enjoy anything to do outside: garden, hike, camp, tend my bee hives, cache, Eventzee, and, Paul Lockhart (astronaut) and Iof course, MUNZEE! I sing in our choir and have been on the praise team and men’s ensemble group. I am a foodie: love to cook, and yea… eat. I like to experiment on new gluten free meal ideas for my wife and son. Happily married for 28 years (my wife might admit to maybe 15 happy ones 😉 ). I have three sons and two grandchildren. I am a high school physical science teacher and past president of the state science teacher association. I volunteer with the Discovery Education Network (DEN) and have lead seminars on using Munzee in the classroom.

Other hobbies include:
I think I mentioned them above: sing, garden, hike, bee keep, cook, cache, Munzee, Eventzee, oh, heck, I am just eclectic.

Any last words?
I love to help others. If I can help you put Munzee in your classroom, scout troop, or make a virtual garden, ask. Not sure who nominated me, but I am honored. Thank you.

Munzee’s 5th Birthday Specials

Here at Munzee, we really like celebrating. If you’ve been playing for a while, you know we REALLY like celebrating our birthday. This year is no different.

Special

Between 00:01 MHQ Time on July 1st through 23:59 MHQ Time in July 31st, there will be 2016 bouncing Birthday Icons on the map. They will move every six hours or when capped.image

When captured, this icon will scatter 5 Present Pins on greenies within 5 miles. These Pins will be available until capped or for 2 hours.

image

The player who captures the Birthday Icon will earn 25 points, and the owner of the host Munzee will earn 15 points.

The Present Pins are a little more of a surprise. For capturing one of these pins, you will earn EITHER:

  • Points (15,25,35,45, or 55)
  • 10 Points AND a Credit Item (Diamond, Ruby, Scatter, RPS, or Blast Cap)

You will also earn the 5th Birthday Badge for the capture of at least 1 Birthday Icon.

Flat Robs

You may have noticed that Flat Rob was a bit more festive on the map when he appeared last night. Well he’s going to be that way for a while. Flat Robs will be on the map through 23:59 on July 31st to help celebrate Birthday Month! (The festive variation of Flat Rob DOES NOT count as a new icon.)

Prizes and Giveaways

Keep an eye on our social media pages for giveaways, specials, and sales throughout the month. You never know what we might do. 😉

We hope you enjoy Birthday Month. We know we will!

They’ve Risen Out of the Fires

For nearly 8 months, Mythological Munzees have roamed the map in peace. The Unicorns roamed for months and eventually drew out the Leprechauns to play. Shamrocks bloomed and treated these creatures to wonderful landing spots. But everything changed when the mysterious fires appeared.

When captured these fires spread flames around, igniting Greenies for short periods of time. But they also had a different purpose. They laid the path for something new and unknown. The scorched land of Munzee became a new home for another Mythological Munzee. It began laying it’s eggs and preparing to join it’s brethren. After a month of waiting, this Mythological Munzee has been joined by 999 others. Now, they’re ready to be released. The Dragons need to be tamed.

Dragon_720

The Dragon is different than his other Mythological family. It doesn’t hide on or eat Shamrocks. It scorches greenies that it lands on and thrives in the heat of the Fire Mysteries that brought it to life. When captured on a Fire Mystery, it gets angered and shoots out the Fire Mystery’s scattered flames. It takes no mercy. If you think you can tame one, though, you may get your chance.

On Friday, July 1st, the 1000 Dragon Munzees will be available for sale in the Munzee Online Store. From 10:00 MHQ time through 13:59 MHQ time, Dragons will first be available for those who DO NOT own a Unicorn OR a Leprechaun. At 14:00 MHQ time, the remaining Dragons will be available to everyone. There will be a limit of 1 Dragon per account with no exception. Like the other Mythological Munzees, they will be priced at $20 each and are only available in this limited quantity. Owners of Dragon Munzees will also received the Dragon badge.

Do you think you can handle the heat?

July 2016 Clan Requirements and the Clan Randomizer

UPDATED 6/29:

  • The 500 points from Double The Fun Events DO count towards Clan Points. Those points ARE NOT doubled.
  • Mythological Munzees, Mystery Nomads, and Physical Nomads (as well as any other specials during the month) DO count towards Clan Wars.

There are two parts to the Clan Randomizer: the clan and the player.

The Clan

Beginning with July 2016’s Clan War, clan admins will have the ability to make their clan “Open For All”. This option will allow players to randomly join their clan. This is an OPT IN feature. You are not required to open your clan to random players. This is helpful if you are looking to fill your clan with 10 players. Remember, rewards are only given to clans with 10 players.

clan_side

The Player

To use the Clan Randomizer to join a clan, all you will have to do is click the “Join Random Clan” button at the top of the page. You will be added to a clan that has “Open For All” ticked and redirected to the Clan Details page of the clan you have joined.

playside

Side Note: Clan Admins

With the addition of the Clan Randomizer, we’ve also changed the Admin process for clans. All Premium Members in a clan will have admin access to the clan. This was changed to give players a chance to fill their clan easily and be more competitive in earning prizes.

To join a clan (either randomly or with friends) or learn more about Clan Wars, go to https://www.munzee.com/clans.

This month is all about getting back to the basics. Many of the specials and updates we have made recently have been leading up to much bigger. This month’s Clan War is just the beginning.

What better way to celebrate our 5th Birthday Month than going old school? This month’s requirements focus on the physical game with double clan points on greenie (regular Munzee) deploys, caps, and CapOns.The double points ONLY apply for clan wars. There will be NO points awarded for virtual munzees. ALL activity on ALL virtual type munzees will be excluded from the clan points for this month. We hope you will also see this as a great equalizer across the entire clan war. Will the same power house clans have what it takes to remain at the top? Will players randomly joined together formulate a plan to reach Level 5? Can we reach 1000 clans before the end of 2016? We shall see at the end of the month. Clan transfer window is the first and second day of each month, so GET READY!

And now, without further ado, July Clan Requirements:

Level 1:
Minimum 1,000 total points per player
Clan total points minimum 12,000
Rewards: 1 mace, 1 virtual

Level 2:

Minimum 5,000 total points per player
Clan total points minimum 60,000

Level 3:

Level 4:

Minimum 14,000 total points per player
Clan total points minimum 170,000

Changes with UTL and NR on Map

This morning, we pushed out a new feature for the map.

When you mark a munzee as UTL or Needs Repair for the first time, the icon now changes to maintenance FOR YOU ONLY.  For everyone else, the icon remains the same. If another player scans the munzee or if themaintenance owner verifies the munzee, the icon will change back to it’s normal icon. If the munzee is marked as UTL or Needs Repair by another player, it will be put in Maintenance Mode for everyone and be subject to the normal maintenance rules.

Examples:

  • Rob goes out looking for Matt’s Mystery Munzee. He can’t find it, and marks it as UTL. Rob’s map now shows this Mystery Munzee as a Maintenance icon. Matt goes out to check it, finds it, and verifies it. The icon on Rob’s map will change back to the Mystery Munzee icon.
  • Matt goes out looking for TJ’s Premium Munzee. He knows exactly where it should be (because he helped him deploy it. True story.), and notices it’s gone. He marks it as Needs Repair. His map now shows as a Maintenance icon. The next day, Rob goes out to find TJ’s Premium Munzee in an attempt to clear out things he hasn’t capped yet. He can’t find it either, so he marks it as UTL. Now, the munzee is put into Maintenance Mode and shows the maintenance icon on everyone’s map.

This update was made in an attempt to help you, the player, avoid hitting the same spots repeatedly if you’ve forgotten that you couldn’t find a munzee in it. We hope it helps you on your Munzee adventures!

A Myriad of Information to End the Week

Things are always busy here at MHQ, and that means a lot of new ideas in the works for our wonderful community. As we wrap up the last full week in June, there some things, old and new, that we wanted you to be aware of.

Munzee Version 3.2.2

After some changes made by Google, we released Munzee 3.2.2 yesterday for Android and this morning for iOS. It corrects errors with the map when viewing from anywhere in the app other than the main screen (e.g., deploy screen and alert configuration screen).  If you haven’t updated to this version, please do.

Birthday Month

July has always been a big celebration for our Birthday Month. Along with MHQ Birthday Bash and birthday events, be on the lookout for an announcement of plans throughout the month. We’re turning five, and it’s going to be a fun celebration.

Urban Camo and Skinned Munzees

As an American based company, we try our best to be inclusive of our whole community of players because we appreciate all of our players worldwide. Not all symbols and icons are recognizable in every country, and we realize that. If you have an idea for a new or modified urban camo or skinned munzee, we want to hear about it! While we do have new ideas in the works, we know we can’t think of everything. You can email iloveyou@munzee.com with your ideas.

POTW

Part of our appreciation of our players is shown through Player of the Week. We’ve had some amazing stories from players, and we always want to hear more. If you know of someone who you think deserves to be POTW, email us their username at iloveyou@munzee.com so we can reach out to them.

If you have any problems or need help, please feel free to email support@munzee.com.

We really can’t explain enough how important to us you, our players, are. Everything we do in this game is to make the whole experience better for you. So thank you for growing the map and spreading the Munzee love around the world. We’re excited for what’s coming, and we hope you will be, too.

Player of the Week: Bettina Kocsis (Bambusznad)

As Munzee has grown over the years, the game has evolved in so many more ways than any of the co-founders could have imagined. We’ve certainly had our fair share of growing pains, but in its essence Munzee has tried to stick to its core goal of getting people out into the world. No one knows this better than those players who have been with us since the beginning. This week’s Player of the Week is Bettina Kocsis (Bambusznad).

Bambusznad_1Who are you?

I am Bambusznad, Bettina Kocsis.

Where in the world do you live?
I live in Budapest (we pronounce it boo-da-pesht), the wonderful Capital City of Hungary, home to several munzees and a few Flat Robs, too!

How long have you platyed Munzee?
I started playing Munzee in October 2013.

How did you find Munzee?
My brother (pulsarxp) introduced the game to me. After finding my first Munzee in October, the next month I joined a fantastic Hungarian clan, and I have been playing ever since!

What do you most enjoy about Munzee?
My favorite thing about Munzee is the opportunity to meet new people. Local events help me meet people from all over my country, and the clan wars introduce me to players all over the world. We have a great Munzee community in Hungary that is very active. That me the game a lot of fun here! I also enjoy seeing the beauty of Budapest as I munzee downtown and by the Duna (Danube Riber). And of course, like everybody else, I love the badges!

What is on your wish list?
I would like to see several new lines of badges. I think badges awarded for physical deploys in multiple states and countries would be good as well as badges for deploy/capture for resorts and a line for clan participation. Of course I would be happy with any new badges! Finally, I have wanted to visit MHQ in McKinney for a while now. Hopefully that will happen one day soon!

Bambusznad_3

Tell us about yourself!
I was born and raised in Budapest. I was trained as an Economic Informatics Specialist and currently work as an Office Manager for a video security firm. And… I am the biggest Snoopy fan ever! If you don’t believe me, just ask him. His virtual garden is located, where else? Budapest! I also want to thank you for the POTW award – it is a great honor.

Other hobbies include:
I love to travel, especially by airplane. My goal is to visit as many different countries as I can. At the same time, there is nothing as good as a lazy Sunday. I also enjoyphotography and taking pictures of places that I visit as well as photographs of Budapest.

Bambusznad_4

Any last words?
Stay tuned… 🙂
