Team Munzee Tuezday: Michael Angel

Alright, well since we missed out on a chance for Meet Munzee Munday, we decided to go ahead and run with a Team Munzee Tuezday. Because why not? Here at Munzee we’re constantly encouraging our players to meet and greet and build the personal relationships that make this game so great. We’re proud to announce a new member of Team Munzee this week, our new Android developer Michael Angel! He’s hit the ground running, but we managed to pry his eyes away from code long enough to answer these questions. So read on about Michael!

559806_10151253886146682_1617450558_nName and Title: Michael Angel, Android Developer

Where are you from? Born and raised in Grand Prairie, Texas. I’ve been in the DFW metroplex my whole life, but I have traveled to other parts of Texas – and once to Nashville, Tennessee.

Tell us about yourself: I’m a video game fanatic and life-long programmer/nerd who is in love with the Android operating system. I also like cooking, cycling, archery, complicated board games, and discovering new aspects of life.

How did you find Munzee? Munzee found me! I was about to start a new job, but Munzee reached out to me for my expertise in Android development, which after finding out more about the company I was quite excited to be a part of the team.

How long have you worked for Munzee? I just started but I am hoping to be a strong part of the team for a long time to come and see where the future takes us.

What do you enjoy most about Munzee? The sense of discovering something hidden, yet elegantly simple and near you is intriguing to me. The team of guys here are fantastic, and I see a great deal of potential with what Munzee can do for a real-life interactive game that can bring friends and strangers alike together.

Famous last words? Never give up! Never surrender!”1921931_10151915671281682_1904208632_n

Meet Munzee Munday: State of the Munion

Although Munzee is only 3 years old, Team Munzee has grown like the game’s map: quick. Over the past few months we’ve seen a Marketplace open, a Bash blast off and a world freeze over. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg (pun intended). In the near future our players will see a new app, a subscription service and, as always, game growth. This growth is what we at Team Munzee pride ourselves on. We’re unwilling to rest when there are improvements to be made and through trial and error we’re making the most of Munzee. Through this all our faithful leader has stood tall, even when his back has crumbled. Like all great leaders, Munzee President Rob Vardeman has been the power behind the game’s recent growth and as he celebrates his first year in the books he has a few thoughts on how it has gone. October 4th, 2014 CoachV celebrated the end of his first year as Munzee president and we’re proud to congratulate him on a fine term.

IMG_2228It’s been a year since you took the reins on Munzee. How has it been?
This first year has exceeded any expectations I could have dreamed a year ago. The response of players around the world to some of the new game play and charity initiatives has been amazing!

What are some of your highlights from your first year as president?
So many highlights it is difficult to only choose a few, but I’ll give it a try. Multiple events around the world meeting new people has to be top of my list. Adding amazing new team members and truly growing the game from the inside has done wonders. Special charity Munzees and fundraising campaigns have touched me and impacted the lives of the recipients in great ways.

Anything you would have changed?
As with any new venture there are always things you look back and know you would change. I’m a risk taker and believe we have to try new things to find our sweet spot. The Munzlympics for example, big fail. However, it lead to a more successful Copa do Munzo, which will lead to an amazing next run along the same lines.

What’s your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of the job is where my passion in life has always been, the people. I love the interaction. I love talking with players who visit MHQ. I love traveling to events and meeting the people who make this game what it is. Without the people, Munzee does not exist and that is never taken for granted.

Least favorite part?
Learning all the tech terms from Scott. I’m very fortunate to have a great team in place with each person having strengths in areas where I am lacking. Scott is very good at sharing issues we have in “Rob terms” so I can understand. I have a great appreciation (and limited understanding) for what Scott and his team do everyday!

teamWhat expectations do you have for your second year?
What can you expect from year 2.0 with me at the helm? Expect the Unexpected has been the slogan of the year and I think everyone (including the team) has come to know it to be true. We have some plans for expansion via the new Eventzee app for special events and private scavenger hunts. We will continue to press forward, innovate, and evolve the game of Munzee with new and unique ideas, contests, and prizes. Players should prepare for an exciting ride as we look to Munzee 3.0 (launch: TBD).  Let’s just put it this way, year one was just the opening act, there is still plenty ahead for Munzee players to be excited about!

Any words of enlightenment, El Presidente?
Our players now should be excited to have built Munzee to this point. They are still part of our early years and growing pains, members of the first 200,000 player club.  We strive daily to prepare for the future, for the millionth player. Will that player join Munzee in the next year? Only time will tell, but when they do, we will be ready! We appreciate the passion seen from players worldwide and will work with the same passion to make Munzee the scavenger hunt of the future! Grow the map, grow the game!rob

Introducing the Official Munzee Virtual Garden!

MunzeeGarden_720px

Inspired by the beautiful virtual gardens our players have grown across the map, Team Munzee is proud to announce the first official Munzee Virtual Garden! Located approximately 5 miles from MHQ, we hope for this to be a highlight when players visit us in McKinney, Texas. Like all of the other gardens out there we want our players to be a part of this monument, so Munzee is offering a very limited amount of pins in the store until supplies last.

For $10 you can be a part of this virtual garden, which will spell the word “Munzee” on the map. No work is necessary on your part to deploy this virtual pin, it will be assigned coordinates and deployed at time of purchase. You may edit the name and notes if you choose. LIMITED TO ONE PER PLAYER ACCOUNT.

When you purchase the Munzee Virtual Pin you get:

  • Limited Edition badge, only available to those who purchase a pin.
  • Points: 10 to owner on deploy. 10 to owner as residual on each cap. 10 to capper.
  • A limited edition pin permanently deployed automatically by Munzee on your account.

These pins will be very popular especially with the Garden’s proximity to MHQ and the upcoming Oktoberfest, so what if they all sell out? No worries, Munzee has plans for additional official gardens to be deployed all over the world in the coming months. More details soon. Team Munzee was so impressed with the unofficial virtual gardens built by players that we simply wanted one of our own. Unofficial gardens are greatly appreciated and will continue to be an integral part of the overall game. This is intended as a nod to the creativity of our players in an official manner.

Oh and before we forget, this garden will also serve as the introduction of a new shimmering pin you’ll only find somewhere over the rainbow. Remember, you’re not in Kansas anymore…

Meet Munzee Munday: Project A.L.S.

Team Munzee is proud to announce that our players have banded together to make a splash in support of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) research. Two weeks after Team Munzee doused themselves in ice cold water and our players virtually froze the map, we’re happy to present Project A.L.S. with a donation of $54,000. For this week’s Meet Munzee Munday we wanted to put the spotlight on Project A.L.S. so our players can see what a difference their donations can make. This great organization was happy to sit down with us to talk about their story, how they’re fighting ALS and what this donation means to their cause.

Name and Title:
Project A.L.S. President Meredith Estess

Director of Research Valerie Estess.

Where are you from?
Project A.L.S. is located out of New York City, but we work with scientists all over the world.

How did Project A.L.S. start?

We were founded in 1998, as a non-profit 501(c)3, when our sister Jenifer Estess, a 35-year-old New York theater and film producer, was diagnosed with ALS. The diagnosis kind of came from nowhere, Jenifer was a committed, single, New York working woman, no one saw this coming. We were told at the time of diagnosis to “max out her credit cards and eat junk food,” Jenifer instead committed her efforts to making a difference for people with ALS—and producing treatments and a cure.

We were a family that had a lot of love and we were desperate for an answer. Each of us came from a different business perspective, Meredith worked for fashion retail merchandising and manufacturing, Valerie was in book publishing and copy writing, and Jenifer worked in theatre and was beginning to work in film. We brought a diversity of talent and skills together for Project A.L.S. and we’re an example that each individual person can make a difference.

What is ALS?
ALS is a neuro-degenerative disease very closely related to Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. With ALS a particular brain cell called the motor neuron is targeted. These motor neurons are located in the brain and throughout the spinal chord and regulate every voluntary movement within our bodies, from walking and talking to sleeping and breathing. So as these motor neurons are infected by ALS, so are our abilities to function.

What makes Project A.L.S. stand out from other organizations?
What we have found is that organizations like the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the ALS Association are primarily focused on patient services, which are absolutely crucial, but my sisters and I were thinking on different lines. We wanted to know who was doing the research and identify the most promising scientific research that will lead to the first effective treatments and a cure for ALS.

Historically, ALS research was conducted by researchers working separately on various aspects of the disease. Project A.L.S. changed that approach dramatically by requiring researchers and doctors to work together, share data openly, and meet shared research milestones. Project A.L.S. recruits the world’s best scientists and doctors to work together—rationally and aggressively—toward a better understanding of the ALS disease process and, in parallel, better therapeutic strategies.

What are some of Project A.L.S.’ achievements?
There have been so many significant breakthroughs. For example, when we first started in 1998 there was one gene identified in connection to ALS and now there are 27 genes identified in playing a role. Without genetic clues, we’re just shooting in the dark, so this is tremendous. We have also developed new technology with stem cell research. We can now take a small skin sample from anyone with ALS and turn that skin cell into a motor neuron that features the specific person’s DNA. So this gives scientists the ability to look at a patient’s individual disease, understand much more about ALS and screen drugs to help prevent further harm. It may sound like something out of Star Trek, but this discovery was a very hard-won, rational scientific progression.

Where can we see some of our donation go towards?
Your money can go to a number of projects that are ongoing. Every project needs equipment and personnel and this donation will go to the needs of our ongoing research. We’re currently supporting a drive to silence mutated ALS genes, which is being pioneered by Bob Brown at the University of Massachusetts. This would be one example of a project this donation will help fund. Some of the genes we find in ALS are known as diseases of inflammation, which are also active in cancer and diabetes. Through donations like this and by investigating the process ALS goes through we can also begin to understand other diseases as well.

Team Munzee thanks all of our players for their help in raising money for an organization we think is making a difference. We’re constantly humbled by the individuals who give so much, so we in turn use our opportunities to give back as well. Munzee is nothing without its players. On behalf of Project A.L.S. and Team Munzee we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

What do you enjoy most about Munzee?
How Munzee brings people together.  It promotes such a great sense of community, the people are great.  Also the Munzee virtual gardens and the virtual art, it is so cool opening up the map to see all the art!  I really wish there was one that we could do here at MHQ! (Editor’s Note: Interesting idea… more on that soon!)

Famous last words?
I try not to talk too much (Editor’s Note: We can tell) however I am so very impressed by the outreach of our player community.  It absolutely amazes me how much effort is given to the charity events and the amount of money that is given.  One day we will raise over $100,000 and even $1 million dollars, even though every dollar amazes me!  A big thank you to all the players from the bottom of my heart!

New special virtual icons featuring ice cubes are now for sale in the Munzee store and proceeds will be donated to ALS research.

Packs of 4 ALS virtual ice cube munzees are for sale until the early September.
