February 2020 GOTM Winners!

February has been a feast for the eyes! Attractive Heartbreakers stole our attention at the start of the month, with the Red Heartbreaker’s sweet dance moves and charisma giving him a slight edge over the other Heartbreakers in the hearts of the players. Shiny Jewel Munzees have also been holding our attention! To complement Clan Wars requirements, we released new packs for them in the Freeze Tag Store, featured them in ZeeOps, and revealed 2 new jewels!

Despite all the distraction, we gave gardens their due attention! We are happy to announce the winners of the February Garden of the Month (GOTM), give one last reminder for February Player of the Month (POTM), and announce the criteria for March POTM! The badges for February GOTM and POTM will be awarded in early March, but we couldn’t wait to share the winners we’ve chosen!

February GOTM

This month, we chose gardens that fit our theme for the month, jewels and hearts! Remember that all winning GOTM organizers and all players who deployed in the winning gardens will be awarded special badges for their contribution to growing the map. This month we’re happy to award the Anaheim Sapphire Garden, designed by Muaddib, and The Saginaw Heart, designed by Brandikorte, as our winning February GOTM! The gardens will appear as follows:

Anaheim Sapphire Garden by Muaddib in Anaheim, CA

A small garden that does a great job of highlighting a similarly-sized park!

Although this is called the Anaheim Sapphire Garden, we love that Amethysts also got to share the spotlight — their smaller cap radius can make it difficult to capture, but since this garden is located in a park, you’ll be able to cap them while taking a leisurely stroll!

The Saginaw Heart by Brandikorte in Saginaw, TX

A beautiful mix of pastel and bright colors make this heart-shaped garden unique.

Prolific garden designer Brandikorte does it again! Although this garden is somewhat near MHQ (about an hour and a half’s drive), you’ll find it’s much closer to DFW International Airport — the distance is cut in half. So if you’d like to visit, keep it in mind on your way in or out of Texas!

All players who deployed in the respective winning gardens will receive the following special badges:

Rules for GOTM nominations:

  1. Garden must feature non-licensed character designs.
  2. The garden must feature a Garden Places Pin.
  3. The garden must be built using a publicly available spreadsheet which we will ask to be locked after being 100% deployed.
  4. We’re asking for ongoing nominations and we will release the winners throughout the year.

Send your nomination for GOTM to iloveyou@munzee.com! Keep in mind that we take all former nominations into consideration for upcoming months. Just be sure your garden follows the nomination rules in order to be considered eligible!

If you need help deploying in a Virtual Garden, you can check out this step-by-step tutorial that will making deploying in a garden easy no matter how long you’ve been playing. To fill in the gardens, make sure to stock up on Virtuals and Color Credits from the Freeze Tag Online Store.

February POTM

February POTM’s requirements called for nominations of Munzee Power Couples, be they significant others, siblings, or good friends. We loved reading about the special bonds each pair of nominees have, and how Munzee is a hobby that both members of the pair enjoy!

All players who have been nominated will receive the following POTM badge. If you know any Munzee Power Couples that should be recognized, you still have a few days left! Send us your nominations by filling out this Google Form: https://forms.gle/qjoyRLZQKV7VQrj17! You can expect to see the badge in early March.

Thank you to all the nominees for showing that couples that Munzee together stay together!

March POTM Requirements

For March’s POTM we want to head back to basics. There are 2 ways you can earn this badge:

  • cap or deploy 200 greenies, OR
  • capture 100 QRewzees
    • You’ll need QRew or ZeeQRew status to be able to capture QRewzees. This status can be earned or revoked at 00:01 MHQ time on the 1st and 15th, so plan accordingly!

As in the previous months, this unique POTM badge is eligible for any player to earn regardless of previous wins. The badge will appear as follows:

Don’t forget that there are badge lines for these 2 Munzee types! You can refresh your memory on the Greenie badge line HERE and the QRewzee badge line HERE. If you decide to shoot for this POTM badge, you’ll be making progress toward those badges as well!

New Jewels Discovered in the Munzee Mines!

Back in 2015, we thought that we had completed our collection of Jewel Munzees with the release of the Amethyst. We even created the Family Jewels badge to celebrate! The MHQ Mining Co. refocused its efforts to dig up as many of the 6 jewels as it could, and abandoned exploratory digs to search for more. In 2016, the Pink Diamond was discovered in dragon hoards. As it was the result of the dragons’ fiery magic, the MHQ Mining Co. still believed that there were no new jewels left to discover. Turns out, they just had to dig a little deeper!

Our latest Jewel Munzees are here to bling up your part of the map! You can pick up the Citrine Jewel Munzee from the Freeze Tag Online Store HERE, and the Onyx Jewel Munzee HERE. If you have PinPoints, you’ll also have the option to purchase them in the PinPoints store! There is NO limit on purchase quantity per player. You can shop the entire Jewel Collection HERE!

Citrine and Onyx Jewel Details

To round out our rainbow of jewels, the Citrine and the Onyx were designed as virtual types. Now both physical and virtual players have five options each if they want something shiny!

Capture Radius: 300 feet, blastable

Deploy: 40 points for Citrine, 50 points for Onyx

Capture: 45 points for Citrine, 50 points for Onyx

CapOn: 40 points for both

To access these jewels, turn on your “Virtual – Jewels” filter. For more information on how to deploy a Citrine or an Onyx, you can check out our Help Guide article.

Some properties of these new jewels have yet to be discovered — will they attract myths like the Ogre, Chimera, etc., and if so, which? In the coming weeks we’ll need help from you, our fellow gemologists, to run some tests! Don’t forget to keep an eye out for any changes!

2x Jewels Weekend!

To celebrate the launch of these two new Jewel types we’re making ALL Jewel Munzees worth double points for the weekend! Starting at 00:01 MHQ on February 21 players will be able to earn double points on Jewel Captures, Deploys, and CapOns. The bonus will last until 23:59 on Sunday February 23. This should help those in February Clan Wars, so be sure to stock up on Citrine and Onyx Jewels, and don’t forget we have the new Virtual Jewel Booster Pack and the Physical Jewel Booster Pack to earn even more points this weekend! You can shop the whole Jewel Collection HERE!

Finding A Munzee Event Near You Has Never Been Easier!

Munzee Events have proven time and time again to be a great way to maintain the wonderful player community and to grow the game by introducing it to new players. As we’ve said before, one of our goals this year is to make Munzee Events easier for both hosts and attendees. We’ve taken steps toward that for hosts with our line of Event Spotlight blog posts, so now it’s time for us to do the same for attendees!

We’re excited to announce that you’ll now be able to check out Munzee Events near you and more in our latest over-the-air (OTA) update!

Upcoming Events Screenshot

Munzee Events List Updates

One feature we’ve always wanted to improve in the app was the Events area. If you aren’t sure what we’re talking about, here’s a quick tutorial — tap on the Hamburger Menu and then tap on [Munzee Events].

We decided to take the best of both worlds! The current version of the app was designed to show much more helpful information than the Event Indicator pin’s munzee details. Now, the app displays the same information displayed on the Munzee Calendar, combined with the old way of showing the Event Indicator pin’s location. The list now shows the following:

  • Name of the event
  • Date of the event
  • Time of the event
  • A button to take you to the Munzee Calendar details

Additionally, events are now ordered in the list by date and time, which should be helpful for days with a series of events, such as the recent SunCoast and OzDayZee events, or the upcoming Munzee Madness 9 events! Distance-wise, events up to 500 miles away will appear in the list, in case you feel like taking a LONG drive!

Event Details Screenshot

Munzee Events Details Updates

We also updated what happens when you tap on an Event Indicator in the list to view its details. Along with the name, date, and time of the event, there is also:

  • A link out to the Munzee Calendar so you can easily mark whether you’re attending the event
    • NOTE: You’ll need to log into your Munzee account on the Calendar page for this to go through!
  • The address of the event location
  • Any extra details provided by the event host

As before, you can use the [Map] button to jump to the Event Indicator pin’s location on the map. This makes it easy to check if you’ve deployed any munzees nearby so you can rack up the points once the event takes place!

We hope this makes it much easier to find an event to look forward to, to pencil in some time for Munzee in your busy schedule, and to find more Munzee players nearby!

If you are a prospective Event Host, we hope this gives you a push in the right direction, as it should be much easier for people to find out about your event! Don’t forget that we are currently offering Spring Event packages if you want to match with our current theme!

2019 In Review

Last year was definitely a year of change as we released an update that was a long time coming — Munzee 4.0! We appreciate all of the players, old and new, who have continued to support the game. It is for you that we are constantly dreaming up ways to make the game more dynamic and the app more friendly! On that note, we’d like to celebrate some key points that the Munzee Community has achieved last year:

Recruiting New Players

As a worldwide geo-location based game, our aim is to continue to expand and grow the community. After all, it’s more fun playing with more people!

  • 65,495 new players started playing Munzee in 2019
    • 83% more than 2018

Recycling Program Revamp

In April we announced QRew, a junior version of the ZeeQRew program, which allowed players to replace missing or damaged Munzees once they met certain requirements. Along with this update we also launched the new QRewzee Munzee, which gave the added incentive of receiving more points after replacing and capturing newly replaced Munzees. This seemed to have a tremendous effect on the number of Munzees that have been replaced over the past year.

  • 95,131 Munzees replaced in 2019
    • 200% more than 2018

New Map Layers

In June we split Physical and Virtual Munzees to sit on their own map layer, along with Flat, Temporary and Event Munzees each being on their own layers as well. This essentially doubled the amount of space available for new Munzees to be deployed, which in turn provided more Munzees to be captured.

  • 80,034,191 Munzees captured in 2019
  • 5,419,442 Munzee deployed in 2019
    • 19% more than 2018

Munzee Events

In September we streamlined our Event Process by making Event Packages available in the Freeze Tag Store. Since event hosts usually purchase the same items for their events every time, we developed different packages based on commonly ordered items. Of course, any additional requests are still handled by our trusty Global Events Director Louise! Purchasing these new event packages sends event hosts all the information they need in an automatic e-mail. We also updated our Help Guide to help walk event hosts through the process!

  • 517 events held worldwide in 2019
  • 12,648 attendees total in 2019

Clan Wars Revamp

In October we released a major update to the clan wars system, allowing teams of less than 10 players to participate and the ability for clans to recruit throughout the month. Along with this update we added a brand new Clan Wars section in the app, which allows players to create/join clans and track their progress on challenge requirements for each battle. We’re ecstatic to see that this has encouraged more players to join in on Clan Wars!

  • 9% more players participating in Clan Wars than 2018
  • 25% more clans reached Level 1 or higher in 2019 after the update
  • 52% more clans reached Level 3 in 2019 after the update

If you haven’t already…

… please fill out our latest Gameplay Survey! Your opinion will help us make decisions and plans for the future of Munzee!

Once again, thank you for everything you have done to help grow the game and support other members of the community!

Event Spotlight: Birmingham, Alabama – April Fool’s Lunch

While Munzee can certainly be a solo game if you choose, there’s no denying the appeal in meeting others who share your interests. Munzee Events are perhaps the best example of this, as they allow you to meet both old and new players in a safe, friendly environment. On top of that, there are usually activities, games, and — if you’re lucky — goodie bags! That being said, planning events requires a considerable amount of effort. So, to make it easier for prospective hosts (and maybe even recurring hosts), we decided to put the spotlight on past events, Munzee-Toolkit style! We hope this series of posts will inspire you to try hosting an event if you never have before, or provide you with ideas to spice up future events if you’re an old hand at it!

Today we’re featuring the Birmingham, Alabama – April Fool’s Lunch, which took place on April 5, 2019 at The Purple Onion in Birmingham, AL and was hosted by giber54, Mdeezy, Robelwilson, and timandweze.

Give us a brief summary about your event!

Every month in Birmingham we have a CoExist lunch (Munzee and Geocaching) on a Friday. These monthly events have helped us introduce many new players to Munzee and helped build a strong Munzee community in Alabama.

What tips do you have when hosting an awesome event?

  1. Always have your friends cohost with you- It just makes it more fun!
  2. Always publicize your events. Not everyone looks at the calendar regularly. Sharing about your events on Social Media is a great way to get the word out.
  3. Make sure your event location has seating and a table or two. It makes it easier for attendees to chitchat and scan each other’s personals.
  4. Consider creating a Virtual Garden at your event location. More Munzees to cap is a good thing! ?

What made your event unique?

Usually at our Friday lunch events we have only locals. This event was attended by players from all over the country. This was also CoachV’s first time ever attending an event in Alabama. Also the Space Coast Geo-Store was there vending. There was also a free prize raffle for both the Munzee and Geocaching events.

Would you like to highlight any future events you’re hosting?

On Friday, April 17th- there will be 2 “Fall Into Spring” Events in Birmingham, Alabama.

A CoExist lunch and there will also be a special challenge event.

https://calendar.munzee.com/event1580525937/

https://calendar.munzee.com/event1580700208/

Thank you to giber54, Mdeezy, Robelwilson, and timandweze for being such great hosts! We will be reaching out to other past event hosts in the future, so keep an eye on your inbox!

A special thank you to Robelwilson for submitting the details for this event! Also of note is that Robelwilson is the first player to earn the 85 Times Host badge, which is part of an expanded badge line we’ve created to honor hosts with above and beyond event counts!

You can see a little teaser for the 100 Times Host badge below- it’s quite the spectacle! It’s a race to see who will get this badge first, though we’re sure Robelwilson is one of the ones to beat! Don’t forget we have “Fall Into Spring” Event Packages available for sale so what better time than the future to start earning those hosting badges!

You can access Heartbreakers under the “Only Expiring Specials” filter.

Sound Off in Our New Survey!

Back in September, we circulated a survey with some questions we had about Munzee gameplay. We got a great number of responses, and released some of the results when the survey period ended in October. The team found the results extremely valuable, since they let us know which areas we were on track in, and which we need to work on. We also came up with more ideas to improve the game based on the results. After doing a lot of brainstorming for this year, we have a ton of ideas we’d like to run by you, the players!

The link to the survey is HERE.

To sweeten the deal, we’ll be doing another random prize drawing! Like in our previous survey, you can submit your username at the end for an entry.

The survey will be closed at the end of February (Leap Day). We are looking forward to hearing from everyone!

January 2020 GOTM Winners!

January is usually a slow month since we’re catching up on tasks left from the previous year on top of planning for the new year. However, January 2020 has been anything but slow! We kicked off the year with our new 20/20 Specials, contributed to Australian relief efforts with 3 new official gardens and Aussie Animals, and launched a new app update, among many other things! That being said, we aren’t too busy to keep up with a little gardening! We are happy to announce the winners of the January Garden of the Month (GOTM), give one last reminder for January Player of the Month (POTM), and announce the criteria for February POTM! The badges for January GOTM and POTM will be awarded in early February, but we couldn’t wait to share the winners we’ve chosen!

January GOTM

This month, we chose gardens that put us in a positive mood just by looking at them! Remember that all winning GOTM organizers and all players who deployed in the winning gardens will be awarded special badges for their contribution to growing the map. This month we’re happy to award the Helsinki colour Garden, designed by Jesnou, Sivontim, Mandello & Neesu, and the Smile Garden, designed by Whatsoverthere, as our winning January GOTM! The gardens will appear as follows:

Helsinki Colour Garden by Jesnou, Sivontim, Mandello & Neesu in Helsinki, Finland

A simple but striking design!

This beautiful garden was designed to show off the 50+ new colors we made available for virtual Munzees in 2018! We love the shimmery effect created by arranging the gradation of colors just so, and the inclusion of virtual Jewel Munzees!

Smile Garden by Whatsoverthere in Hagerstown, MD

Will this spark a trend in emoji-themed gardens?

This garden was completed just in time for the Happy Holidays Buddy! event, which our very own Daniel Hammock attended!

Australia Relief Virtual Garden Badge

As a special thank you to everyone who helped to fill the aforementioned relief gardens, we created an exclusive badge! We were amazed at how quickly the spots filled up! Everyone who deployed in at least 1 of the 3 relief gardens will receive the following badge:

January POTM

January POTM’s requirements called for nominations of Munzee Weather Warriors, aka Munzee Foul-Weather Players. We are seriously impressed by the dedication all the nominees have shown!

All players who have been nominated will receive the following POTM badge. If some deserving players have just popped in your head, you still have one day left! E-mail those nominations to iloveyou@munzee.com! You can expect to see the badge in early February.

Thank you for having a love so strong for Munzee that bad weather doesn’t scare you off!

February POTM Requirements

For February’s POTM we want you all to nominate players who are often paired up. We’re looking for Munzee Power Couples! These pairs don’t have to be romantically involved — friend pairs are just as qualified! These players are practically joined at the hip and are always considerate of each others’ goals (“Have you capped the Alternamyth that just popped up?” or “See if you can use a blast here!”). The players that play together stay together (and Munzee On!) so we want to spread the love!

As in the previous months, this unique POTM badge is eligible for any player to earn regardless of previous wins. The badge will appear as follows:

Munzee on!
