GR8 QR8 Means Let’s Celebrate! (Plus Sale!)

Have you been missing the Munzee Advent Calendars?! Well we have something in store for you that is pretty good. In fact, some might even say it’s GR8! The GR8 QR8 (pronounced “Great Crate”) packages will award a new prize each day for eight days in a row! While we won’t spoil the surprises for these advent calendar-style packages, we do want to line out some of the details ahead of time so you can join in on the fun!

Notice a lot of “8’s” in the title? The GR8 QR8 is here to celebrate Munzee’s 8th birthday, of course! Similar to our Advent and Countdown Calendars last year, the GR8 QR8 will be opened daily to reveal a variety of different prizes! You’ll get GR8 munzees to deploy, four GR8 days with multiple points, at least one GR8 badge, a GR8 new product, and more!

The GR8 QR8 will also include a new Fire Mystery credit. This is the first time we’ve offered Fire Mysteries as a credit, and they’re available first in the GR8 QR8!

Ready to purchase your GR8 QR8? The GR8 QR8 contains over $25 in value and will be on sale for $15 starting today! GR8 QR8s will be available for sale until July 5 at 15:00 MHQ time. Prizes will be awarded at 00:01 MHQ each day beginning on July 8, 2019 until July 15, 2019, so be sure to shop now to join in on the fun!

Celebr8 Sale!

What could make this announcement even GR8R? A sale, of course! Starting today at 15:00 MHQ time, we will be putting a wide variety of items in the Freeze Tag Online Store on sale for 12% off. You can enjoy this sale for the first 8 days of the month! That means you will be paying 88% of the price for an assortment of items from now until 23:59 MHQ time on July 8. How GR8 is that?! You can see the entire collection here: https://store.freezetag.com/collections/celebr8

Meet Munzee Munzday: Robbie

Here at Munzee we’re constantly encouraging our players to meet and greet and build the personal relationships that make this game so great. To bring back this fun way to introduce team members, it’s time to get to know Mr. Wallabee himself, Robbie!

With beautiful wife and daughter, Kelsey and Autumn

Name and Title:

Robbie McGuire | Product Manager, WallaBee (redcarrobbie)

Where are you from?

I’m from Whittier, CA. Fun fact: Most of my life was spent in the ‘unincorporated’ part of Whittier, meaning I got to answer the “Is that LA or Orange Country?” question with a simple “Yes.”

Tell us about yourself:

Where to begin? I have a gorgeous wife (Kelsey) and beautiful 9 month baby girl (Autumn)! Kelsey and I just celebrated our 5 year anniversary, 3.5 years of which have been spent in Texas! Being a Californian transplant, I feel more Texan every day (but still don’t own a pair of cowboy boots). I prefer iPhone over Android, Pepsi over Coke, and fruity candy over chocolate. I usually try to turn conversations into dad jokes. I was a hands-on learner in college, which explains why I did so well in my ASL classes.

Autumn’s first Easter

How long have your worked for Munzee?

I have been working for the company for 3.5 years! My official hire-in date is January 4th.

How did you find Munzee?

I found Munzee like many other players: through Geocaching. My good friend, Andrew, took me to my first geocache in early 2015 and I loved it! After a couple of months of Geocaching, I wanted to know if there were other games similar to it, which lead to me finding Munzee in the App Store. I loved the concept of looking for hidden objects and getting rewarded for that effort with experience and badges. The ease of use (scanning with a phone and moving on) was something that I felt lacking from the other game.

What do you enjoy most about Munzee?

With Kelsey at the Jeff Dunham show

At its core, I really enjoy Munzee’s physical game. While my schedule and life don’t allow me to be more involved with that aspect of the game, it’s what snagged my attention in the first place. The fact that Munzee can be a physical and virtual game at the same time is a nice hybrid that many other games try to create with AR, but fail at in the process. Munzee allows its players to choose how they want to play – which helps for those with busy schedules.

What are some of your other hobbies?

My hobbies are best sorted into categories of ‘used to have time for’ and ‘still find time for.’ Having a baby changes a lot.

    • UTHTF: Disc Golfing, Ultimate Frisbee, Soccer, Disneyland, Hiking, Bike Riding, Arts & Crafts, Collecting, and many different video games.
    • SFTF: Rocket League, Graphic Art

Famous last words?

Check back next week to get to know another member of the team!

Jump for Joystick Munzees! Triple the Fun!

We have a special announcement for MunzPak subscribers, as the July MunzPak will feature the brand new Joystick Munzees! This MunzPak exclusive will be available in some version in all three MunzPak subscriptions, which you can order in the Freeze Tag Online Store beginning on July 1 at 00:01 MHQ time. (Remember if you order a MunzPak before then, you will be ordering the June one!) Now let’s see why these brand new munzees have us jumping for joy…

Joystick Munzees

This new munzee type is based on throwback video game specials from over the years. Joystick Munzees come in both physical and virtual forms, though both forms work similarly and are worth the same point values. When you capture a Joystick Munzee, three of one retro game icon (either Runzee Rob, Leap Frog, or Munch-Man) will scatter to Greenies within 1500 feet. These munzees will stay on the map for 3 hours or when captured.

The point values for the Joystick Munzees are as follows:

Points

  • Cap: 88
  • CapOn: 19
  • Deploy: 80

Virtual Joystick Munzees are not blastable. To access these munzees, turn on the Mini Games physical filter and the Others virtual filter. You can access the scatters under the Expiring Specials filter. Their proximity will be 150 feet from any other virtual Joystick if deploying a virtual, or 150 feet from any other physical Joystick if deploying a physical.

Retro Games

Capping a Joystick Munzee will cause three Runzee Rob, Leap Frog, or Munch-Man physical munzees to scatter to Greenies within 1500 feet. These retro games have an added layer of fun all of their own! Once the retro game icon is capped between 1 and 3 new virtuals will be deployed within 700 feet of the retro game icon. These virtuals will be different based on what game icon is capped.

You have to be within 150 ft to capture the various game virtuals, and these can only be seen by the person who capped the retro game icon, similar to Infrared Munzees. Retro game virtuals will disappear after 2 hours or when capped. You can learn more about the three retro games and their unique virtuals below!

Runzee Rob Munzee

When you cap a Runzee Rob, up to three (1-3 random) new virtual “Gold Coinz” will be deployed nearby, similar to an Air Mystery/Feather or Night Vision Goggles/Infrared Munzee. These Gold Coinz will only be visible to the player that capped the Runzee Rob and are available for 2 hours.

Points

  • Runzee Rob
    • Cap: 19-85 split with owner
    • CapOn: remainder of the 19-85 split
  • Gold Coin virtuals
    • Cap: 25 points (no CapOn)

Leap Frog

When you cap a Leap Frog, up to three (1-3 random) new virtual “Flyz” will be deployed similar to an Air Mystery/Feather or Night Vision Goggles/Infrared Munzee. These Flyz will only be visible to the player that capped the Leap Frog and are available for 2 hours.

Points

  • Leap Frog
    • Cap: 19-81 split with owner
    • CapOn: remainder of the 19-81 split
  • Fly virtuals
    • Cap: 29 points (no CapOn)

Munch-Man

When you cap a Munch-Man, up to three (1-3 random) new virtual “Ghostzees” will be deployed similar to an Air Mystery/Feather or Night Vision Goggles/Infrared Munzee. These Ghostzees will only be visible to the player that capped the Munch-Man and are available for 2 hours.

Points

  • Munch-Man
    • Cap: 19-80 split with owner (Pac-Man was released in 1980)
    • CapOn: remainder of the 19-80 split
  • Fly virtuals
    • Cap: 34 points (no CapOn)

Badges

A game within a game within a game! If these Joystick Munzees weren’t already exciting enough, there will also be badges! You can earn the following badge by deploying any Joystick Munzee:

Joystick 8500- Deploy 1 Joystick Munzee of any type.

There are also badges to earn for capturing each of the 3 retro games. The badges appear as follows:

Stay tuned to see if we expand this line of badges in the future, because though we might know the past, who knows what’s in store in time to come! Are you ready to get retro?! Be sure to subscribe to the July MunzPak to receive your Joystick Munzees for the chance to join in on the fun!

Announcing June POTM and GOTM Winners! (QRazy Challenge!)

It’s almost a wrap for June, which means we’re just days away from Munzee’s official birthday month! But before we dive into that celebration, it’s time to honor both our June Players of the Month (POTM) and Gardens of the Month (GOTM) winners!

June POTM

June POTM was selected based off player nominations, as we asked you to send in your choices for outstanding clan coordinators. Many players jumped at the opportunity to share their picks for players who step up to the plate and apply their top organizational skills to coordinating Clan Wars. You can find a complete list of the June POTM winners at the end of the blog.  Congratulations to all of these players for being recognized by fellow players for your outstanding leadership skills!

July POTM Requirements

Our July POTM requirements will see Determined Deployers being awarded. Anyone who deploys at least *16 munzees throughout July will earn the following special Player of the Month badge that we have newly updated for July winners:

Per usual, the July POTM badge won’t be awarded until the end of the month, but it is a new badge for Birthday month only. So even if you’ve earned the previous POTM or POTW badges, this will be a new badge to earn! And speaking of earning badges for deploys…

QRazy 8’s Deploy Challenge

It’s time for a community challenge! We challenge you all to help us reach 8,888,888 deploys before the end of the month. From the last deploy count taken on June 25, we are currently at 8,768,683 deploys. If the goal is met by the end of July, anyone who deploys at least 8 munzees of any type during July will earn 1 Virtual, 1 Virtual Color Credit, 1 Urban Fit credit, 1 Physical Capture 2x Booster, as well as the limited edition QRazy 8’s badge!

*Note: Socials and personals are excluded from deploy count and qualification badge for both POTM and the deploy challenge. If the deploy challenge is met, all players who deployed will also earn the Crazy 8’s badge. (All prizes and badges will be awarded at the end of the month.) You people are QRazy, and we love it!

June GOTM

It’s time to recognize some outstanding Virtual Garden builders! While we have lots of exceptional garden nominations to choose from, we’ve been waiting to award our June winners for a little while now! All winning GOTM organizers, as well as all players who deployed in the winning gardens, will be awarded special badges for their contribution to growing the map in one of the funnest ways possible. The June Garden of the month title goes to the Fort Worth Longhorn Garden, organized by denali0407, and Grenaa City’s Coat of Arms, organized by RUJA and Heinerup! You can view the winning gardens below:

Fort Worth Longhorn Garden by denali0407 in Fort Worth, Texas

Some gardens are so beautiful they don’t even need nominations! Everyone at MHQ (and online!) were big fans of this beautiful garden, which was created for Geowoodstock 2019, held in Fort Worth.

Grenaa City’s Coat of Arms by RUJA and Heinerup in Grenaa, Denmark

This very large garden contains more than 3,000 virtuals for a flawless execution by this Danish duo. The garden depicts the coat of arms of the Danish town of Grenaa based on a seal from the early 14th century that depicts a bridge over the Grenaa river. A church stands on either side of the bridge, symbolizing the local church and older chapter, while the stars and crescents represent traditional Christian symbols of the time. This garden is near a very large birthday event taking place July 6 which Matt will be attending.

Did you have the pleasure of deploying in either of this month’s winning gardens? All players who deployed in the respective winning gardens will receive the following special badges:

Do you know a garden that is worthy of the July GOTM title? We’re asking for players to submit already created gardens for the chance to win any of our upcoming Garden(s) of the Month! Just be sure to follow the rules!

GOTM Rules for GOTM nominations:

  1. Garden must feature non-licensed character designs.
  2. The garden must feature a Garden Places Pin.
  3. The garden must be built using a publicly available spreadsheet which we will ask to be locked after being 100% deployed.
  4. We’re asking for ongoing nominations and we will release the winners throughout the year.

Send your nomination for GOTM to iloveyou@munzee.com! Keep in mind that we take all former nominations into consideration for upcoming months. Just be sure your garden follows the nomination rules in order to be considered eligible!

If you need help deploying in a Virtual Garden, you can check out this step-by-step tutorial that will making deploying in a garden easy no matter how long you’ve been playing. To fill in the gardens, make sure to stock up on Virtuals and Color Credits from the Freeze Tag Online Store.

A big congratulations to all of our POTM and GOTM winners! Keep up that fantastic work, and start deploying July 1 to win prizes during the birthday month!

Coupe du Munzee Quarterfinals Update!

It’s almost time for the third icon adjustment for our Coupe du Munzee specials! Following the Round of 16 game update, which saw eliminated teams reduced to 1 icon each and advancing teams increased to 30 icons each, there will be another map change on Thursday, June 27 at 00:01 MHQ time to mark the Quarterfinals!

As the Women’s World Cup moves into the Quarterfinals, 8 more teams have been eliminated. That means that there will only be 1 physical icon per eliminated team on the map. However, your odds of capping one of the advancing teams just went up! All 8 advancing teams will see their icons increase to 50 per team!

The 8 advancing Coupe du Munzee teams, reflecting the results of the Women’s World Cup, are as follows:

  • Norway
  • England
  • France
  • United States
  • Italy
  • Netherlands
  • Germany
  • Sweden

The following teams have been eliminated in the Round of 16 and reduced to 1 physical icon each:

  • Australia
  • Cameroon
  • Brazil
  • Spain
  • China
  • Japan
  • Nigeria
  • Canada

The following teams were previously eliminated and will remain at 1 icon per team:

  • South Korea
  • South Africa
  • Jamaica
  • Scotland
  • New Zealand
  • Thailand
  • Argentina
  • Chile

Schedule Updates!

While players can be treated to the new icon increase for the time being, keep in mind that only the 4 teams advancing to the Semifinals will remain in abundance on July 2 starting at 00:01 MHQ time. Since we made some updates to allow the eliminated teams to remain on the map with 1 icon a piece (rather than remove them entirely), we’ll provide an updated schedule here:

  • Teams advancing to the Quarterfinals will see an icon increase, while all eliminated teams will be reduced to one icon:
    • June 27 (00:01 MHQ time) – July 1 (23:59 MHQ time)
    • 8 team icons abundant, 16 icons reduced to one per team
  • Teams advancing to the Semifinals will see an icon increase, while all eliminated teams will be reduced to one icon:
    • July 2 (00:01 MHQ time) – July 7 (23:59 MHQ time)
    • 4 team icons abundant, 20 icons reduced to one per team

That means that all teams who make it to the final two matches will remain on the map from July 2 until the conclusion of the Coupe du Munzee specials on July 7 at 23:59 MHQ time, at which point all icons will leave the map. However, after the Coupe du Munzee specials leave the map, we will have a special surprise celebration for the winning icon! Stay tuned for more details!

How many Coupe du Munzee badges have you earned so far? Hopefully your team is still in the race!

July Resolutions Are Here!

While you still have a few days left in June to put your iced coffee money in your savings account for June Resolutions, we’re already looking to the future for our July Resolutions badge! From eating healthy to traveling more, our monthly Capture Streak badges have been centered around a year of personal improvement. As summer heats up on the Northern Hemisphere, this month we challenge players to lose weight (if you need to for your health)!

Even Santa is working on his “summer bod”

Each month’s unique badge is dedicated to accomplishing another New Year’s Resolution. Like our Super Streak badges, you will be awarded a badge if you capture at least one Munzee* each day for the entire month. The monthly Capture Streak badges allow for the chance to work towards a different goal each month in order to bring about a year of positive growth and change.

Losing Weight for Health

While folks on the Southern Hemisphere might be bundling up, the Northern Hemisphere is well into bathing suit season. And for many, the rise in temperature is accompanied by a heightened dissatisfaction with one’s physical appearance. Weight loss, however, shouldn’t be something that is appearance based. It might sound cheesy, but if you’re asking yourself “do I have a summer body?” the answer is “do you have a body?” If you say “yes,” then you’re all ready to hit the beach!

While it’s crucial to accept your body as is, that doesn’t mean that you can neglect your health. If your weight is impacting your health, then it’s time to lose weight the right way in order to feel better and increase your longevity. Rather than gravitate towards a fad diet or “lose weight quick” scheme, the two main components of weight loss are diet and exercise. The number one reason why diets fail is because they are unsustainable. By changing your lifestyle choices permanently, you will never again have to grapple with the disappointments of “yo-yo dieting.” Just be sure to find a healthy meal plan that works best for YOU.

While counting calories can lead to unhealthy behaviors, it is beneficial to be aware of factors such what you eat, how much you eat, when you eat, and how often you eat. Keeping a food journal, or tracking your food intake on one of the many helpful dieting apps, can help you become more aware of what you put into your body so that you can make more informed dining choices.

When it comes to staying active, the playing field is unfortunately not even. However, if you have underlying medical issues that are prohibiting weight loss, you can still set daily goals for yourself. We are so proud of how many players have achieved monumental fitness accomplishments, especially after many have shared their stories of chronic physical disabilities and illnesses that they refuse to allow to hold them back. Remember, the only person you have to compete with when it comes to fitness is yourself. Focus on personal growth rather than comparing yourself to others, and remember that health is always the goal.

Munzee on!

* In order to encourage active gameplay we will not count Social Munzees for these capture streaks. If you know you’ll be in an area without munzees, plan ahead!

Meet Munzee Munzday: Tamara

Here at Munzee we’re constantly encouraging our players to meet and greet and build the personal relationships that make this game so great. To bring back this fun way to introduce team members, here is one of the key members of the Freeze Tag office!

Sleepover with Louise at the National Video Game Museum!

Name and Title:

Tamara Sahagun, Production Specialist (I think my old, self-made title of “Analytics Acolyte” is more accurate, but it IS less official-sounding) (Raan)

Where are you from?

I was born in Manila, Philippines, but grew up in Guam and CA!

Tell us about yourself:

I have the reputation of being “the quiet one” in the office— it takes a while for me to open up to people! Once I do though, my crazy side comes out in snatches. Case in point: last year after bash, the team got me to sing in a mermaid costume at a karaoke bar! I sang “Counting Stars” by OneRepublic. Other than singing, I’ve played games all my life— mostly Playstation games like Crash Bandicoot, Jak & Daxter, Sly Cooper, Metal Gear, Prince of Persia, Final Fantasy X, Dance Dance Revolution, etc. but I have also played such gems as the Ace Attorney series and League of Legends, the latter of which I wrote my honors thesis on in university. Speaking of which, I graduated Magna Cum Laude from UCI with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Game Science.

A cow I painted for the Lucerne Art of Dairy contest!

How long have your worked for Munzee?

I’ve worked for Freeze Tag for 4 years and Munzee for 1.75 years. I had to count the months on my fingers to be exact— It hasn’t felt very long at all!

How did you find Munzee?

I went to a super-cute Easter tea party-themed event with Craig and Mari, but was not able to get the app working on my iPhone 4S (yes, I know it’s an ancient phone— I have upgraded since then!). So I just followed Mari around while she was capping physicals. Then, the app magically worked a few weeks later! Mari took me around our office one day to teach me the common spots where munzees are hidden and that was that!

Attacked by a zombie at E3 2018!

What do you enjoy most about Munzee?

Definitely the events! I always have fun planning what to wear with Mari, looking at who else decided to dress up (not just staff, players too! I love seeing creative outfits), meeting up with the rest of the team if it is a larger event (I love seeing everyone in person!), and talking to the players, even if I’m shy and awkward. I’m slowly getting to know some of you! You’ll see! I can be fun! I also like that I get to travel to new places, even if it’s local. As a homebody, I can think of a million ways to occupy myself at home, but I’m too lazy to plan trips myself.

What are some of your other hobbies?

Getting books signed by one of my favorite authors, Stephanie Garber

Other than karaoke, video games, and Munzee, I recently got back into reading and have been logging everything on my new Goodreads account. I’m challenging myself to read 1 book a week. I was ahead earlier in the year, but now that I’ve been getting busy my lead has vanished. While I’m not very good at dancing, I like challenging myself to learn K-Pop dance routines, especially since I’ve been told I look like Twice’s Nayeon. Oh and also escape rooms! I’ve only done 4 so far, but they’re always a good time. The horror-themed ones are the best!

Famous last words?

Couldn’t think of one, so here’s a piece of advice I saw on the internet that I take to heart: “Every time you get dressed remember that, if you die, that’s your ghost outfit forever.”

Check back next week to get to know another member of the team!
