Munzee Player of the Week: Manny O. (DoubleStuff)

This week’s player of the week is a special player that Team Munzee’s very own TeeJayoo had the pleasure of meeting recently!  He’s an all around exciting guy, and we’re excited to feature him for this week’s Player of the Week! Everyone, meet Manny:

Are you excited already?  Well, read below and get to know Munzee player Doublestuff!

Who are you? Doublestuff

Where in the world do you live? Grafton, MA USA

How long have you played Munzee? 1 year & 5 months this Friday (Editor’s note: Happy Anniversary!!!)

How did you find Munzee?

To be honest, I came across Munzee completely by accident, and I’m glad I did! I have been a recreational ‘cacher for years. My daughter attends ISU in Ames, IA. We often fly to Milwaukee from Boston and take my in-laws van and drive out to Ames, I would cache at each of our destinations.

american pickers

Have you heard of the show American Pickers? Well our family loves the show. After getting hooked on AP I found out that their shop Antique Archaeology was located in LeClaire IA, just across the Mississippi river. We would drive right by the place 5 mins off the highway. Sure enough there was a cache on location, I made a point to stop on our way to Ames find the cache and maybe meet Mike, Frank and Danielle. We stopped on our way out tons of muggles and they were closed doing their indoor shots for the show. (didn’t see any cast members). On our way back from dropping our daughter at ISU, AA just closed but the cache and letterbox (in the trunk of the 1959 Nash) was wide open as we approached. Since there was nobody around any more I got to look at and trade all sorts of SWAG and Travel Bugs. On thing that caught my eye was a business card with Mike and Frank’s face on it, it said Welcome to American Pickers Munzee and stated to scan the code with a smart phone. So I did, it brought me to the app which I downloaded and back on the road we went. I created my account and the rest is history.

Once we got back to Milwaukee, I found a few Munzees to cap while I cached with my brother-in-law and got him started. As soon as I got back to Grafton I started really searching. There wasn’t that many in the area, about 10 or so. They all belonged to RAWHYD and one was only 5 mins from my house. I capped that one on the way back home from the Airport. I didn’t even notice the virtual at the airport. Now I have 3 virts at the airport and other have deployed virts at the other terminals as well. I started to cap the ones close by and branched out from there. THere were not many when I started but in that first year, the Massachusetts Munzee map grew 1000 fold and I am very happy. Now, I try to grow the map in towns were there are no Munzees, maybe some day I’ll get a cap on one of those deploys. It has been only 17 months and I have capped and deployed in several states, I Munzee everywhere I go. I have greenies in Spain, virts all over the world. I am currently at level 87 and do not intend on stopping. This year I intend to deploy greenies in Switzerland, Germany and the Netherlands. I now Munzee more than I cache and am a more active Munzeer than I ever was a cacher.

What do you enjoy most about Munzee?

Munzee is universal, you can deploy and cap in an Urban setting, something that’s getting harder to do in caching. Anyone with a smartphone can do it which opens it up to any age group and any physical ability. In caching you maybe limited to terrain 1 or 2., which there are not that many. It is easy to play, especially to deploy (just follow the rules, no strict approval process) you can create your own QR codes, you can buy generics for deploy) no more Tupperware or ammo cans. In the winter you don’t have to go on long hikes in the snow, in the woods, I guess the same holds true in the summer (no bugs). I enjoy the competition (clan wars), the recreation (cap while out shopping) and the challenge (getting those icons). I like the how MHQ is coming up with different types of Munzees, quiz, motel, etc. The Virts are the best of all, now you really can send people to interesting places, where a physical sticker, tag or a cache container is not a good idea. I also enjoy when MHQ goes out in the playing field to meet the players (don’t ever loose that part)! I met up with TeeJayOoo and Zoolander and some local Munzee players during their visit to Hartford and I look forward to attending the one in Boston this year.

What is on your wish list?

I would like to see virts have a bigger deploy and cap points since they’re price point is higher than regular Munzee. I have suggested that as the price of the “purchased” Munzee goes up the points should as well.  I would also like to seen another increase (thanks for the first one) in the number of undeployed Munzees a premium user can have, maybe added in incremental parts as your premium membership gets renewed. Regarding premium renewals, is there anyway to make that automatic? I would also like to see a moving Munzee that I can put on my car, or maybe on shirt, cap or bag. It can be a sticker or a patch. that has points. That would go a long way in getting more exposure.

Tell us about yourself!

My real name is Manny Orejola, I am Filipino, born in the USA, a “Navy brat”. My parents are both imigrants to the US and I grew up mostly down south on different Naval bases. I am married with 2 children, my wife is Polish, born in Nebraska. My eldest I talked  about earlier at ISU, and my son is a senior in HS. My son and wife have both started to Munzee recreational basis. I have introduced Munzee to two of my brother-in-laws.  One is very active in the game, and the other is a casual player. Before Munzee I was a ‘cacher. I got introduce to ‘caching through the Boy Scouts, it’s funny how
Munzee also got exposure via Scouting as well at the Order of the Arrow conference. I teach ‘caching to the scouts and adult leaders at the distric level. I am also a Geocaching Merit badge counselor.  I look forward to teaching Munzee to the scouts as well, right now a couple of pages in my Geocaching presentation is dedicated to Munzee.

People sometimes ask how I came up with doublestuff as my name. When I was in the Army, everyone would have a hard time pronouncing my last name O-RE-HO-LA, I would be called alphabet all sorts of names but after awhile they started to get it but it only got as far as saying “OREO” like the cookie. From there it morphed to doublesuff-oreo (Oreo was already taken as username in for other scavenger hunts) then just plain doublestuff.

I used to print and laminate my munzees. This made for a slow process. For those starting out it can be frustrating as you can only cap. Now I print my own sticker munzees and have several different skins depending on the deploy. I have a tackle box with all my munzees in it and a card case credit card wallet several munzee skins for those quick deploys.
Being able to print your own or buying from the store is the single thing that allowed me to grow the map at a faster rate and keeps me moving towards the next level. I would recommend anyone
that has a laser printer to buy waterproof labels and print your own. You will see your scores double and triple in no time. I supplement it with generics, metal tags and magnets from the store.

Other hobbies include?

When I am not Munzeeing or caching, I love to cook, and I am a foodie and will eat weird things (I have tried fugu fin in sake and did not die) I am a Food Network fan. I consider myself an amateur chef. I compete and have won in several local chili cookoffs for charity!

chili cook-off

This saturday I am competing again for the Appalachian Service Project to raise funds to by materials needed to fix homes of our poorest of the poor in the U.S. (Appalachia) I try to play guitar, ukelele and the cahon. I’ve started to do unique “adventureous” things for my birthday. Sky Diving, Powered Parachute flying, Hot Air Ballooning and last year pilot lessons. I don’t know what I will be doing this year, maybe hang gliding, or bungee jumping.

Munzee’s 1 millionth deploy!

Normally, we post our Player of the Week, but this week we’re taking a moment to highlight a big moment for Munzee, and a special player out there.

We’ve had a few players requesting this info and we’re happy to announce our 1 millionth Munzee deploy!

Scott and Daniel pulled the data, crunched the numbers, and found the lucky Munzee player was Nicklas, who deployed “Dammweg” on January, 5th, 2014!

Dammweg

We’ve been looking forward to this day since July, 2011, and we’re so excited that we’ve reached 1 million Munzee deploys.  We couldn’t have done it without our awesome players like Nicklas!  Thank you guys so much!  This is a milestone we’re happy to have reached.

To celebrate our 1 millionth deploy, Dammweg has been converted to a special Diamond Munzee, and Nicklas received bonus deploy points!

Here’s to another 1 million Munzee deploys!  We can’t wait to see how the map and our player community will grow in 2014!

Munzee Player of the Week: Daniel Hammock (Hksfarm)!

If you’ve ever seen a joker get “The Banner Hammer” -then you’ve had the pleasure of seeing this week’s Player of the Week.  If you’ve ever found yourself confused on Facebook staring at a Unicorn, you’ve probably seen something from this POTW.  But if you’ve noticed the increase in amazing Munzee Youtube videos, or ever needed help with something relating to Munzee gameplay/app/etc… then you’ve definitely interacted with this charismatic goofball!  This week’s Player of the Week is none other than Daniel “HKSFarm” Hammock!

Daneil

Who are you? Hksfarm

Where in the world do you live? Baltimore, MD. U.S.A.

How long have you played Munzee? Since January 5, 2012 (Editor’s Note: Happy New Year and Happy Anniversary!)

How did you find Munzee?

I first found Munzee looking for alternate ‘caching apps. When I downloaded it and tried it there were very few Munzees for me to find. So I didn’t really play much at first until a while later when my friends CodyHollowFarm and DudleyGrunt told me that they were playing it. So I got back into it and have been hooked ever since!

What do you enjoy most about Munzee?

I love the social aspect of Munzee. I first was invited to make a clan with BoneCollector. We made the Maryland Munzee Militia. Popularity of the clans grew so I created a Facebook page for the MMM. As more people wanted in I bought my wife (Horselovernikki) a premium membership and she started a second MMM clan. The social part of Munzee, like making friends, talking on Facebook, and doing clan capping sprees is what I enjoy the most. I also wanted to give back to my fellow Munzee players. So I made the “Hksfarm’s Monthly Munzee Giveaway” group on Facebook:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/767423953284276/

I love watching Youtube videos, I love Munzee, and I love giving things away, so this was a step in the right direction for me.

What is on your wish list?

CIRCLES ON THE IPHONE APP!!!!!!!!! (Daniel’s Note: You can delete that Omi) (Editor’s Note: 5 minute Ban Daniel!!!)

I would love to see more organized gatherings for Munzee players to get together and chit chat.

Tell us about yourself!

My name is Daniel Hammock. I’m 33 years old. I’m a Taurus. My favorite food is Chinese. My favorite animal is a UNICORN!….LOL Just kidding!!!

Daniel

HksFarm and Fam!

I usually go with Horselovernikki on my Munzee excursions, but have went solo with clan members on special 4x days 😉 Speaking of which, that should be another suggestion! More 4x days! One day I would love to fulfill my dream of working for Munzee….ya know as a janitor or something, wiping up the tears of other banned users. So basically, Rob’s job.

Daniel was nice enough to share his Social with us:

HKSFARMSOCIAL

He’ll be happy to read your positive journal entries as soon as he’s out of BAN HAMMER JAIL!  We’re just joking.  Be sure to check Daniel out on Youtube for his monthly contests at:

Munzee Player of the Week Spotlight: TheRealGigi (Tammy Teel)

If you’ve ever needed a positive, helpful friend in the Munzee community, then you know who this person is.  She’s rallied multiple clans together to rank in the top 20, she’s the admin of nearly 70% of the Munzee help groups out there, and you can count on people like her and our previous Player of the Week Ken to turn any Munzee frowns upside down!  This week’s Player of the Week Spotlight goes to Tammy Teel, though you may know her as TheRealGigi!

photo (9)

Let’s take a moment to “meet” TheRealGigi by reading below!

Who are you? TheRealGigi

Where in the world do you live?  Spring Hill, USA

How long have you played Munzee?  10 months

How did you find Munzee?  That’s an interesting story… I have always loved treasure hunts and scavenger hunts… including the movie The Goonies!! One of the things Jay(PiedPiper) and I had in common and discussed on our first date. He mentioned he liked to Geocache, however had become more involved in Munzee. I immediately searched for Munzee on the web and downloaded to my phone. The next night we went to dinner on the way home he told me to pull up the app, as he would stop and let me cap an Easter Egg on the map… I was addicted at that moment and started searching the area, then state after state to find the seas of green. That is where the adventure began, and my entire life changed literally. Jay did teach me to cache, although considering my RA, I am not always physically able to do the difficult rare finds he enjoys so Munzee is perfect for me.

What do you enjoy most about Munzee?  I truly wish I had enough time to explain how God has blessed my life via Munzee, I will just say every day is a gift to me, I look forward to our munzee adventures each day. each person I have met through Munzee has proven to be an asset in my life. I now have friends across the states and around the world. Jay and I actually plan our travel routes by looking at the Munzee Map. Right now My Most Favorite thing about Munzee is watching Our Dream come true by building the Franklin Tennessee Specials Garden with our friends David, Amy, and Gracie Scarborough and now Jon Haag and Chelsey Hall. Together we have become the #1 Mystery Cluster in North America and still growing, that doesn’t even include the multitude of Virtuals, Diamonds, Weapons, Golds, Motels and Quiz Munzees and now Virtual Mysteries…thanks to the Munzee Family.

photo (8)

What is on your wish list?  Personal Wish list is to physically place a Munzee in all 50 states. Wish List from Munzee ? First on the list is the revamped version of the app for the iPhone, I know Patience is a virtue…as I prefer one without the bugs so looking forward to all the hard work I know is being put into its creation. I have always wanted Mystery Munzees to be worth at least 10 points for the cap with the continued increments of 5 pts up to 50 pts, however I suppose that could alleviate part of the “Mystery”. I also want to see more special icons and badges… I enjoy capturing others Socials including trading for the Rare ones…(Hint Hint…Social-Butterfly Badge?) and enjoy the challenges of the badges. (Editor’s note: Tammy was interviewed last week before some big announcements… Did we “do good” Tammy?!?!)

Tell us about yourself!  My name is Tammy Teel although my Grands call me Gigi. I am a mother of 3 daughters Catherine(foxxygirllt), Jessica (lulubell8709) and Laura(GeorgiaPeach) 2 granddaughters Juliana & Emma Kate and 1 grandson Collin, as well as part time mom to Jay’s Children Ashley(Peanut) and Clinton(TheLoneRooster).

photo (7)

Jay and I both are blessed with jobs allowing us to work from home, however this can lead to no outside world interaction if you are not careful. Munzee has truly made a difference in my life in multiple ways, especially my physical activity level which has already proven to be beneficial for my health. Jay and I munzee together on a daily basis, and it is a great way for us to spend quality time with our teens. Recently with the introduction of clan wars and watching our dream come true of creating a Specials Garden in Tennessee we have started meeting up with several of our teammates (now great friends) and capping and deploying as a group. Then again, I never meet a stranger and can talk to anyone about Munzee as Jay will be the first to attest. I enjoy cooking and used to have a pretty good second income baking and decorating cakes for birthdays, showers and weddings, thus the relation in cooking and cupcakes in my socials. I am very honored to have been nominated and chosen as Player of the Week… and I Greatly Appreciate the hard-work and efforts MHQ puts into making the game so enjoyable.

Tammy was sweet enough to share her Social Munzee with us!  Check it out:

Player of the Week: Carl Olsen (JasperCottage)

We’re spinning around the globe again this week to congratulate another amazing Player of the Week!

During the month of November, several players stepped up to the challenge of changing the face of men’s health, including this player.  Building one of the first “Mustache Gardens” in Australia, this always helpful Munzee garden designer coordinated with all players in his country to build some amazing Munzee gardens for everyone to enjoy.  A family oriented and pro-active player in the Munzee Australia groups, Carl Olsen knows what’s important to life, and the game of Munzee: having fun, and spending time with his family!  Drop down below the photo to check out this fun and cheeky Player of the Week!

IMAG2910 (2)

Who are you? JasperCottage

Where in the world do you live? Perth, Western Australia

How long have you played Munzee? I Started playing in July 2012

How did you find Munzee?

My wife Cathy had heard of “that other outdoor game” so we went to Kings Park in the city to look for one to see if it was something that would interest us. The very first cache that we found was at the top of the DNA tower and it had a QR code attached to it as well. I downloaded a scanner and scanned it joining up with the same user name. I then checked the map and we got three more before leaving the park. Initially we played as a team but within a month Cathy made her own user name (HideNSeek) and we take our kids out to Munzee as well!

IMAG2205 (2)

What do you enjoy most about Munzee?

I play both individually and with my family. Some days it is about points and I go capture what I can but it is also great to explore the map, finding a park you didn’t know existed and exploring the city we live in.

It can be a very social game playing with friends or individually depending on what your preference is. The same for how much you invest financially applies too. It’s the versatility of the game and the progressive improvements that make it interesting. I look forward to seeing what secrets are yet to be revealed.

What is on your wish list?

I am very much looking forward to events going live. I have an idea for a Munzee based car rally treasure hunt that i want to structure around the events once they start.

Also new badges to collect – perhaps a place where suggestions for badges can all go to and one or two are selected each month (is there a badge for player of the week? wink wink lol).

Finally with the Business Munzee: I think at the start of each day they should reappear on the map not always stay red once captured for the first time.

Tell us about yourself!

I have taken on the role of building virtual gardens in Perth when an event or something special comes up. It started with FluffyFish creating a virtual garden in Kings park early this year which filled quickly so I did an extension to add more. since then I have created 5 more, including three separate mustache designs and lately a park and the phrase “MUNZEE?” across a central location in Perth.

Over the last 6 months I have had to travel to the Munzee wilderness in Malaysia and the Philippines where I took the unique opportunity of becoming the number #1 deployer in two countries. Now if someone would just go and capture them 🙂

For normal deploys i have no set way or standard that I use. It varies from posts and poles with stickers, to hanging on fences and my favorite ones would be magnets inside the base of statues in very busy areas, and on the back of a pot plant in a vertical garden with semi cryptic clues to find it. I have learnt you need to be able to look like you are tying your shoelace at a moments notice to not look suspicious in certain areas :).

My favorite Munzee moment came from a dare on Facebook in the at about 1am from Rob to deploy a Munzee or he was getting out his “ban hammer”. There is a mystery in Atwell, Western Australia still called “Rob made me do it” to prove who was the victor on the occasion!

Over the next few months I want to work on getting to the elusive 100,000 points mark and my other goal of chasing down and passing the last of the Munzee team that are ahead of me.

Look out coachV I have my sights set on you 😉

Carl was awesome enough to share his Social Munzee with all our readers! Check it out:

Munzee Player of the Week: Rob Verstappen!

If you’re a Munzee player and you’re ever lost in Europe, there’s only one person you need to meet: Rob Verstappen.  Lovingly referred to as “Dutch Rob”, “The Rob V overseas” and even “Rob’s other Brother”, Robje64 is the friendly “face” of our European Munzee community.  Always helpful, he’s a proactive Munzee player that’s strengthened the Munzee community worldwide, even volunteering to help us with translations for the Munzee app!  Now tip your hat to the other Mr. V. and check out this interview below!

Who are you?  Robje64

Where in the world do you live?  Venlo, Netherlands

How long have you played Munzee?  Since Feb 23, 2012

How did you find Munzee?

I was at a Stammtisch ‘caching Event.  When I was there I saw the QR code in the well-known green colors.  It got my attention right away! Since I always explore new things on my iPhone, I immediately downloaded the app and signed in.  I scanned it, and there it was: my first 5 points!  From the first day I started playing Munzee, I liked to looked at the map and check out all the Munzee pins out there to capture!  In the beginning, there weren’t that many in my area.  So I started to look further. Planned a trip to Germany, which included a small “hike”.  That hike had many Munzee, and every time I heard “PING” it drove me further, to capture one after another! (Editors note: sounds like Munzee “Madness” to us!)

What do you enjoy most about Munzee?

As I played, my passion for Munzee grew and grew. I started to contact people. First Germans, Dutch people and some Belgians.  Then it took off rapidly all over the world, contacting Munzee players, networking, and making friends.  Time and Friendships swept me up in the moment, before this game, I never thought it possible to meet and befriend so many people.

After a while i got in contact with the wonderful people from MHQ.  And not to put too many words on paper, nowadays i try to arrange as much as possible on Munzee stuff as i possibly can.  Setting up Facebook groups, connecting with other players, and volunteering Munzee help for new players.

And just another thing i want to point out what i really liked:
Last Friday was my 49th Birthday. I had a 2 days of training at a garrison in the middle of the Netherlands.  When I arrived at the garrison in the morning, I was surprised with many Virtual Munzees and Mustache Munzees to congratulate me!  How cool is that? 😉

Nowadays, I am fortunate to volunteer testing various projects for Munzee.  How involved can one get in the game? It’s super, and I love it!  So the most I enjoy about Munzee, is getting connected with lovely people all over the world and being part of this wonderful community.

What is on your wish list?

On my wishlist… hmm… that’s something to think about for a while…

Some suggestions that immediately come to mind:
– Seeing at least 1 Munzee being deployed in every Country around the world.
– Events being well organized, so more people can meet in real life.
– The whats-next-on-the-surprise list from Munzee coming out.
– The possibility to link broken Munzee via the app.

Oh! and visiting Munzee headquarters one day!

Tell us about yourself!

For the ones who don’t know me, my real name is Rob.  I am in the Royal Dutch Military at Oirschot, Netherlands (near Eindhoven).  I am married to the most lovely wife on this planet, Monique.  Here she is below!

POTW_robje64

Normally when I go out to deploy/capture Munzee, she’s always by my side. Being very supportive, helping out, and just walking together having fun with the game.  We joined the lovely people in the Clan Cologne. Going on streaks together and, as most people know me, eating and drinking with all who wants to join! We can all say that Munzee has taken a very important game in our lives. And when you are that addicted you better make sure to have fun as we do!

At home, you can usually find me on my iMac. Creating graphics to share with the Munzee community (Mostly for the Facebook groups)! And of course planning the next trip, discussing with Monique what we want to see or where we want to get most points out of a day.

I’d like to thank all players around the world for being in our lives.  No matter if we have met you or not. Every munzee is a feast!
Thanks to Munzee HQ for letting us (not only me, Monique as well) be player of the week.  If you meet me in person i have a special Munzee gift for you!

And for this special occasion i also created a new Social munzee. 😉

*President Rob Note* “Dutch” Rob is a really important part of our European player base, noted by his honorary title, European Ambassador. It was a pleasure to meet my “brother” in person on my recent trip to Cologne. I can’t imagine anyone taking more care of the details and organizing a great opportunity to meet so many of our amazing European players. I’m happy to honor Rob for his impact on Munzee today!

Celebrate the Twelve Days of Christmas with Munzee!

xmasglobe_preview

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from Team Munzee! It’s the Holidays, a time of giving, friendship, and fun. For Christmas 2013, we’re celebrating the “Twelve Days of Christmas” with our players!

One set of icons will be added to the map each day (MHQ time) through the entire 12 days of Christmas. The times will not be announced, it’s a surprise! Each icon will bounce around the map until December 31st, 1500 MHQ.  Here’s a breakdown of the icons you’ll see loading to the map each day:

XmasCover

Special icon captures will earn 20 points, and the owner will receive a residual 10 points for hosting the icon. When the icon is capped by one player it bounces to another location somewhere in the world! Players may find a special present under their “Badges” should they capture at least six different Special icons during the Twelve Days of Christmas!

From December 13th-25th of the Twelve Days of Christmas, every capture or deploy is eligible for a unique present! These prizes will be selected at random from player activity during the Munzee Christmas Celebration! Some of the special prizes you can win are:  the new 20,000 mah external battery packs available in the Munzee store, the new FitBit Force, Pebble Watch, and a Garmin GPS unit.

If that isn’t incentive enough to “grow the map” this holiday season, here’s something you might like: between December 15th and December 24th, we’ll randomly award Munzee presents for CAPTURES OR DEPLOYS. Every player will have the chance to win Diamonds, Virtuals, Mystery Virtuals, Motels, and Socials.  The more you play, the more chances you have to win!

Additionally, Santa comes early on December 24th, as we’ll be giving away 50 one year premium Munzee memberships!

Tis’ the Season to celebrate and give.  This December, we’re celebrating our players, giving away some awesome Christmas presents, and wishing you all a happy new year to come!
