Player of the Week: Oliver Tausch

As Munzee has grown over the years, the game has evolved in so many more ways than any of the co-founders could have imagined. We’ve certainly had our fair share of growing pains, but in its essence Munzee has tried to stick to its core goal of getting people out into the world. No one knows this better than those players who have been with us since the beginning. This week’s Player of the Week is Oliver Tausch (tau).

with my son in Berlin 2Who are you?
I’m Oliver Tausch, but the Munzee community knows me as “tau”.

Where in the world do you live?
I live in Delbrueck, North Rhine-Westphalia, Good Old Germany, but my real Munzee homezone is Paderborn about 20km from my home.

How long have you played Munzee?
I signed up in July 2012.

How did you find Munzee?
I was on a job in Los Angeles with my coworker Piglett78. He already played a GPS-based game but got a hint from a friend to try out Munzee, so I did, too. On a Sunday, we had some free time and went to 1849’s homezone. It was the weekend H2OKLAN passed 100,000 points with a big event close by. It was unbelievable. I thought I would never get to 100k in my life. We were afraid of going to this event as we were absolute beginners. Piglett78 and I spent half a day on capping greenies. We searched for one for about an hour. A security person came by because we looked some kind of suspicious. We tried to explain what Munzee is all about, and finally we were allowed to continue our tour. At the end of the day, I reached the unbelievable amount of 175 points!! We felt like heroes and made it on the leaderboard the next day.

The next months, I deployed my first Munzees and found out that another player was living on the same street (PappaPad). I got in contact with him and some other players living in our area. When Clan Wars were introduced, we founded the “Team Delbrueck” Clan. Some time later, in October 2013, we won the battle with an all-time record of more than 800K points. In November, only one month later, Munzee launched the MVMs and our record was broken straight away. I wish Fitbit had been integrated at that time as we all probably reached the equivalent of several marathons that month to get that far. Capping was more or less reduced to physical codes those days. During this battle, we built up one of the biggest Mystery clusters in the world with more than 1200 physical Mysteries. It took us months of planning with lots of barbecues and beer to get it organized.

What do you most enjoy about Munzee?
As I said, we started with only one clan. These days, I’m managing six clans with players from all over Germany and Switzerland. With every new battle, each player decides which level(s) he/she would like to go for, and I try to puzzle them into six teams. This give a high flexibility for everyone respecting the individual potential for each battle. We grew to a great community and most of the players have stayed with us for a very long time. Many of them I’ve met personally at events. I find this very exciting as their real faces always look differently than what you imagine is behind the Munzee name.

I love getting out and exploring cities all over the world “from a Munzee view”. Achieving the different battle levels pushes me forward. As I’ve spread my Munzees in many different countries, I like to see who caps them.

What is on your wish list?
The Clan Requirements should be published one or two days earlier. This would help people like me to manage their clans.

I would really like to see an official virtual garden in our Lippesee area. Nowadays, players from outside the big cities and Munzee hotspots need to travel a lot to get points and other advantages. In this case, people from big cities would need to come and visit us.

I also would like to see a virtual replacement of a physical munzee (special) which is in maintenance mode. As my munzees are spread all around the world, it is kind of hard to maintain. A virtual which adopts the type of the munzee in maintenance mode would be perfect.

Tell us about yourself!
Born in the “Summer of ’69”, I grew up and went to University of Paderborn. I have a beautiful wife and two kids, a thirteen-year-old daughter and a ten-year-old son. They both play Munzee, too, and my wife finally “got used to it”.

kids and me 2

I’m a Master (Dip. Ing.) of electrical engineering and Director of Electrical Engineering and IT in a mid-size company in Delbrueck. My job makes me travel around the world frequently to meet customers and visit our agencies. That’s why I like Rovers are part of the Munzee game. Instead of hanging out in hotel bars, I try to go out and Munzee.

Other hobbies include:
Some years ago I used to be a semi-professional soccer player. Now I just play for fun and concentrate on coaching my son’s soccer team. I like bicycling, hicking, and taking a break in the sauna. I’m very involved with
with my daughter carnival (well, my whole family is) which is very popular in the area I live in.

Any last words?
I really feel honored to be a POTW, now and say THANK YOU to everyone who was involved in my nomination. “Team Delbrueck and friends”, you are fantastic guys, and it’s a pleasure to play with you day after day! Hope we stick together for a long time and still “fight” many battles!

Munzee Player of the Week: Ron Hudspeth (McRon)

As Munzee has grown over the years, the game has evolved in so many more ways than any of the co-founders could have imagined. We’ve certainly had our fair share of growing pains, but in its essence Munzee has tried to stick to its core goal of getting people out into the world. No one knows this better than those players who have been with us since the beginning. This week’s Player of the Week is Ron Hudspeth (McRon).

Who are you?
Ron Hudspeth aka McRonCapping in Berlin Tiergarten

Where in the world do you live?
In the town of Celle which lies between Hannover and Hamburg in the north of Germany.

How long have you played Munzee?
I started playing on the 21st November 2012.

How did you find Munzee?
I got introduced to the game through a work mate, “Blindauge”. He tried to get me to play another GPS game, but after a few hours crawling under bridges and around trees, I decided it was not for me. A couple of week later, he came up with a new game called Munzee. After logging in and deploying my first Munzee, I was hooked. The same day we both became Premium members and then made the biggest mistake we have ever made. We were offered virtual Munzees for $1 and, no really knowing what they were or how to deploy them, we didn’t buy any. ;( ;( I’m still waiting for that offer to reappear.

Köln Event

What do you most enjoy about Munzee?
Getting out and about with the Wife (Plueschi) and meeting up with other players either at events or if I see them capping near me then I’ll go and try to find them. I can remember watching 2 Australian ladies (Lisa and Helen) doing the Lamp Post Dance and creeping up on the Fab Four (Iain, Michelle, Maggie, and Pete). I’m also into the social side of the game in a big way which has brought me many new FB friends, some of whom we got to meet on our Florida Vacation this year which turned FB friends into real life friends.

What is on your wish list?
More special icons and badges. I like the challenge.

Köln Event 2014 with the Man himself

Tell us about yourself!
Born in Glasgow, Scotland, hence the name McRon, I grew up traveling the world with the British Army as my dad defended the Empire and ended up staying in the north of Germany, finding my wife and starting a family. Thirty-five years, four daughters, and six grandchildren (#7 is on the way) later, I’m still here. The area that we live in is great for playing Munzee with Hannover about 40 minutes and Hamburg an hour away. In Celle itself, it’s getting hard to find places to deploy LOL I work on building sites as a crane operator for a German construction firm. This also involves sites all Berlin Event 2014 with the Clanover Germany, and Munzee gives me something to do in the evenings (I’ll go and check out the local signs and lamp posts). I’m part of the 3-Länder-Clan which has been in every battle to date, winning Gold, Silver, and Bronze, with our lowest placement so far being #29.

Other hobbies include:
Almost every type of board or card game. I’m just a gamer at heart.

McRon also included some socials (one of which is on the Header Image), so cap away!

Munzee Player of the Week: Josef Lewerken (GeoBeTa)

Munzee may be an international game, but our team is very much headquartered in the US. A lot of responsibility falls on our worldwide players to not only grow the game, but also aid in spreading and translating Munzee news and announcements. One such dedicated player is Josef Lewerken (GeoBeTa) who helped start the first German Munzee podcast- MunzPod. It’s this dedication that truly helps our small staff continue to grow the game in new and interesting ways- and in all languages! Read on to learn more about GeoBeTa!

4

Who are you?

I´m Josef Lewerken aka “GeoBeTa”.

Where in the world do you live?

My hometown is called Delbrueck, a small town near Paderborn in Germany. It´s also the HQ of my clan “Team Delbrueck” which won the October clan battles in 2013 with the highest result before the Mystery-Virtual-Munzee-Rollout. So there is some historical air to breeze.

How long have you played Munzee?

Today my account is 1.181 days old, but I’ve played seriously since I got my first Android phone in April 2012.

2How did you find Munzee?

I heard about Munzee as an active “other game” player in 2011. At the time, Paderborn was a munzee desert. An addicted player, called PappaPad, was kind enough to build a local community.
During the october clanbattles in 2013 Paderborn changed to “Paderblue”. We added over 1,000 mystery munzees and made our area to the 3rd biggest mystery cluster worldwide.
So thanks alot Mr. Pad, you made me find Munzee.

What do you enjoy most about Munzee?

It´s a combination of different things. Getting outside, reaching the highest possible clan level with it´s rewards, chasing special icons, the German Munzee community and of course producing the German spoken munzee podcast called MunzeePod. But clan battles are the biggest fun factor.

5What is on your wish list?

Well, it´s an app-based game. So, why do I have to use a browser for my daily needs? It would be awesome to buy credit items, to watch my #pointstoday, to have a message system which invites me to a private clan chatroom when I´m joining a clan, to capture a location-less by touching it and say “open with Munzee” (you need a second device) and that all in app. I want to go outside! There´s no time for sitting in front of a PC.

Tell us about yourself!

I´m 33 years old and married to my wonderful wife Debby (Thank you for supporting me Honey. I love you!). We´ve got an awesome 2 year old son who is interested in mobile devices. In the Munzee breaks I am a certified engineer for professional coffee machines.

Other hobbies include:

Definitely the podcasting. I´ve produced the German spoken MunzeePod (http://munzeepod.de) since march 2013. In my opinion it was the 1st pure Munzee podcast worldwide. I´m thinking about a monthly live talkshow with guests form the German Munzee community in 2015. Many thanks to my awesome audience. And of course many thanks to matzenthias. There wouldn´t be a MunzeePod without him.3

Birthday presents arrive and Clan War begins

On the eve of America’s independence, we continue to celebrate our #FiestaThree birthday here at Munzee. Whether you’re in the states or across the world, we’d like to extend a chance to celebrate Munzee’s birthday! So in between the hot dogs and fireworks this weekend you should take some time to cap and deploy. Even though it’s our birthday we want our players to get the presents, so here’s what you have a chance to win today:

  • 3 Mystery Virtuals
  • 1 Blast Capture
  • 1 Ruby

GemRuby_128For those that have been paying attention to the blog, the announcement of the ruby may not come as too much of a surprise, but what exactly that stone is will be news to all. The ruby is the birthstone of July, so it’s only fitting we would announce a new family jewel for our birthday. Much like a diamond, the ruby munzee gives players and owners a split between points when captured. In connection to our third birthday, players who cap a ruby will earn a random split of 33 points with the owner of the munzee.

The presents will be awarded to random captures throughout the day beginning around 9AM (MHQ time) TODAY ONLY, so the best way to strengthen your chance is to get out and capture all day! If you’re lucky, maybe you’ll even earn more than one! Clan Wars begin today as well, so this should be an added incentive to play today. Birthday celebrations are just beginning, so keep checking back so you can make sure you don’t miss out on anything.

Munzee Player of the Week: Christoph (c-bn)

The story is a common one here at Munzee: Someone hears about a “new geolocation game” only to see very few munzees in their location, but before long, due to the hard work and dedication of our players, the game grows to new heights. Like many players before him, Christoph (c-bn) has helped expand Munzee in his area and developed a love for the game. Although his family, work and Munzee leave little time for other hobbies, Christoph is happy to dedicate himself to such a wide, supportive community. The combination of exercise and gadgetry are some of Christoph’s favorite things about the game, but don’t take our word for it. Read below to get to know Christoph a bit better:

Where in the world do you live?
I live in Bonn, the former capital of Germany, and that’s my username: “c” for Christoph and “bn” is the shortcut on our license plate.

How long have you played Munzee?
My account age is 1,000 days. I found and captured my first munzee on October 11, 2011. My first deploy was November 13, 2011.

How did you find Munzee?
I read something about a new geolocation game in an internet forum. It sounded very interesting to me, but unfortunately there were no munzees around me! So I forgot about it for a couple of weeks until I captured my first munzee on a trip to Hamburg. In October 2011 there were just three greenies, but have a look to the Binnenalster today!

It took a while to become really obsessed, but once infected my passion grew rapidly.
The first big thing I remember was the “walk the Rhine,” the first power-trail in the Cologne/Bonn area created by ReMiKu. In spring 2012 we had never met, but there were afternoons he deployed on the South end and I captured on the North end of the trail. This was an interaction I enjoyed very much.

mapIn the very beginning of getting contact to the international community I created one of the first munzee art. We coordinated and deployed virtuals to build the premium member star. Think of a huge green meadow with nothing but the star. Today it is accompanied by many other VMs and MVMs.

What do you enjoy most about Munzee?
Munzee is a great opportunity to go outside and have fun! I like the combination of walking/exercise, gadgetry and points. As an early bird I know Munzee from the very beginning! I love the evolution of the game! I love the unexpected! I love specials! I love badges! I love statistics! I love double-point-weekends! I love a 3,500 pts. blast! I love the #SuperChuck! I love the Top3 – but I have to leave within the next few days :-/ Greetings to zeusi!

And – of course! – I love my Clan COLOGNE! My friends: It’s a joyful honor to be part of this clan!clan

The interaction with many other people, locally to grow the map, or worldwide to trade socials, talk about the game on FB and so on — all that is my pleasure, too! I’m looking forward to the upcoming events in Cologne and Hamburg!

What is on your wish list?
We were very spoiled with dafis Statzee. After the integration in Munzee.com most I miss is the section with all the clusters in the world. How many RMH do we have in Cologne? I don’t know and I can’t count them. I’m sure, Statzee will expand more and more.

Tell us about yourself!
I’m 40 years old, married, have two sons (7 and 5 years old). And I’m addicted to munzee!
I try my very best to infect my family with this enthusiasm. They all have their own accounts, but … 😉 My specialty is to deploy munzees unreachable for some players. It’s not my bad intent, it’s just because of my body size. I’m 2.02 meters (6 ft 7 in) tall and sometimes I look around, searching for the best place to stick a minizee and forget my dear fellow players that have trouble to reach my deploys. Some journal entries remind me — and I vow to improve!

What are some of your other hobbies?
This question is a joke, isn’t it? I’m addicted to munzee — no time for another hobby! The rest of my time is family, sleeping, working.

Is there anyone you would like to thank?

I thank the people who nominated me to the POTW.
I thank all the members of the MHQ for this game and all the fun it brings to my life.
I thank my parents, without whom I would not be at the world.

Yours faithfully,

Christoph
c-bn

Munzee Longsword

sword_256[2]

The Munzee Longsword

Long live the Munzee longsword. Three clans earned the Munzee Longsword after play concluded for September 5, 2013. Clans Cologne, Hummel Hummel, and Menagerie were the first clans and players to receive the longsword.  How did they earn this level three weapon in the current clan battle?  Each clan member accumulated a minimum of 1000 points.  Find more details about the Munzee longsword via our help desk.

What’s Next?

“The Chuck” is the highest level weapon during this clan battle.  It won’t be as simple as just accumulating points to earn this weapon.  Which clan will figure out the right combination to unlock The Chuck first?
