Share Your Referral Code and Win Big!

Last week, we shared Munzee Introduction Flyers which allow you to introduce players of other geo-location based games to Munzee. These flyers are editable to include your own referral code to benefit from these new player signups. That will come in handy for our latest competition.

From tomorrow (July 19th) at 00:01 MHQ time through July 31st at 23:59 MHQ time, we will be having a competition using referral codes. After the time period has passed, we calculate the three players who had their referral codes scanned the most*. The winners will receive gift cards to the Munzee Online Store.

Speaking of the online store, we’ve also added a new Munzee Decal with Referral Code to it!

ReferralCodeSticker

This sticker will be die-cut (similar to the current Munzee Decal) but will also include your own referral code on it! These are available now and are prices 2 for $5. (Because these are custom, they may take a bit longer to ship than generic stickers or decals.) These are just the start to new, personalized stickers you will be able to get!

So get out there and grow the community!  What better time than birthday month?!

Munzee on!

*Please keep in mind: This competition is about growing the Munzee community and game. Checks regarding the legitimacy of the number of scans will be in place, and if a user is found to have cheated in some way, action will be taken. While we don’t like to include this disclaimer, we want to make sure that it is clear and that everyone is competing equally.

Player of the Week: Lori Daiker (Lorimar)

As Munzee has grown over the years, the game has evolved in so many more ways than any of the co-founders could have imagined. We’ve certainly had our fair share of growing pains, but in its essence Munzee has tried to stick to its core goal of getting people out into the world. No one knows this better than those players who have been with us since the beginning. This week’s Player of the Week is Lori Daiker (Lorimar).

New Products in the Munzee Store

Updated: Now includes Capture and Deploy points for the Prize Wheel.

It’s been talked about and teased since late last year, and we figured Birthday Month would be a great time to release it. The Prize Wheel Munzee is here! Well, almost. Munzee Introduction Flyers

You may have noticed a large increase in people walking around outdoors with phones in their hands recently. Pokémon GO(TM) has cast a bright light on geo-location based gaming. Many members of Team Munzee have heard stories of, or experienced firsthand, interactions with players of Pokémon GO(TM) and other geolocation games. During these interactions we have been able to introduce them to Munzee. We saw a post from McChickenNugget about a flyer they use to introduce players of other games to Munzee, so we reached out to them. They were kind enough to send us their design, and we’ve updated it a bit so that everyone can use it.

SingleFlyer

We’ve also included the PDF, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Illustrator files below so that you can edit the text for different games and change the QR code to your Referral Code (it’s currently the Munzee Referral Code). Remember the referral code must be one of the first ten captures on a new account in order to register.

The introduction and adoption of games like Pokémon GO(TM) to the public is great for the geo-location based gaming community as a whole. So if you see someone playing other games, or if you just want to introduce a new person to Munzee, feel free to spread the Munzee love!

Meet Munzee Munday: Judy Nguyen

Here at Munzee we’re constantly encouraging our players to meet and greet and build the personal relationships that make this game so great. Our team continues to grow and we’re excited with the addition of Judy Nguyen.

387998_2424252012886_742180605_nName and Title:

Judy Nguyen – Web Designer/Developer

Where are you from?

I grew up in a small town called Yukon, OK (the home of Garth Brooks, he never visits) right outside of Oklahoma City until I was sixteen and moved to the DFW area after that to be closer to family.

Tell us about yourself:
Pretty nerdy, laid back, introverted (but that doesn’t mean I don’t like meeting new people!).

I graduated from the University of Texas at Dallas with a BA in Arts and Technology. Initially I wasn’t sure what direction I wanted to take my degree, ended up getting interested in web development, studied a lot about it, and here I am! 🙂

How long have you worked for Munzee?
Approximately 1 month and 2 days.

What do you enjoy most about Munzee?
I’ve only been here for a month, so I’m still getting the hang of things, but so far the best part of working at Munzee are the people that work here. Everyone is proactive and open to new thoughts and ideas.1911278_10201742787478626_1028306444_o

What are some of your other hobbies?
I’m pretty obsessed with learning new things, which can range from teaching myself how to knit to hacking around with Raspberry Pi. In the era of the internet, learning how to do *anything* is just a Google search away.

When I’m not spending time nerding out learning about code and design, I enjoy playing video games (Fallout, Civilization, Stardew Valley are some of my faves). I also like dabbling in arts and crafts. I love music and enjoy finding new music to listen to (mad props to Discover Weekly on Spotify!). I also watch a lot of Netflix!

Player of the Week: Harry ten Veen (HtV)

As Munzee has grown over the years, the game has evolved in so many more ways than any of the co-founders could have imagined. We’ve certainly had our fair share of growing pains, but in its essence Munzee has tried to stick to its core goal of getting people out into the world. No one knows this better than those players who have been with us since the beginning. This week’s Player of the Week is Harry ten Veen (HtV).

atBelarus-Polish_borderWho are you?

I am Harry ten Veen, from Steenwijk, Netherlands. I’m also known as Harm ten Veen on Facebook.

Where in the world do you live?
I live in Steenwijk in the northern part of the Netherlands along with a few other (more or less) active Munzee players. It was ProfPlof who had already started deploying here, and I was lucky to be able to cap a lot of his munzees.

How long have you played Munzee?
My first ever capture was on the 21st of April 2013, two greenies of ProfPlof, of course. So it’s 3+ years of Munzee activity. In those early days, my wife and kids used to join me for a few hours of Munzeeing on Sunday afternoons.

How did you find Munzee?
One time when I was exploring a pingo ruin, I found a QR sticker on the info sign. I had recently installed a QR scanner on my phone at the time, so I read the link to a website. At home, I checked it and found Munzee. It took a while until I had a phone that the app could be installed on. ProfPlof and Reej helped me in those days.

What do you most enjoy about Munzee?
Like most players, I like hunting for munzees, collecting all of the different icons and badges, trading socials, exchanging rovers, walking and exploring new regions, and being outside in the fresh air. Meeting new friends and, of course, events is what gives an extra dimension to our hobby.

I have a habit of keeping all sorts of statistics for myself like personal records and trading lists for socials and rovers. Every month, I publish the leaderboard of the Netherlands.

Playing Eventzee is a weekly activity, and I always try to participate in the Munzee Monthly Giveaway and the Munzee Monthly Photo Contest.

Following (too many) Munzee Facebook groups is time consuming, but I try to keep up.

What is on your wish list?
I like what is going on with Munzee. New munzee types, new temporary specials, and so on. On my wish list are small, mostly statistic things:

  • Better registration of one’s Rover list (only first contact)
  • Quick Deploy – I would like to see a blocked area for Flat Robs
  • Specials Screen – Design a better icon for Unicorn and Leprechaun hosts. Add the Motel, Hotel, and Virtual Resort rooms and give them their own icon.
  • Statzee – On the Deploys statistics, I would like to see a total for the different types. Both the Quiz Munzees should be added.

Tell us about yourself!
Born in 1955, I am 60 years of age, now. My wife is Rita (RtV), and we have two daughters: Laura (lauratenveen) and Emma (emmatenveen). For 39 years, I worked at the largest agricultural bank in the Netherlands, last as a Service Desk Coordinator at the internal ICT service desk. I had a change to quit my job two years ago.

HTV-firstdeploy_20130710

Other hobbies include:
My greatest hobby is searching for border markers. I have walked along the complete border line between Belgium and Germany and more than half of the Dutch/Belgian border. It’s all about studying and gathering information then walking with friends along the border and crossing through whatever landscape we encounter. All my socials have border markers as them.

Also, I am an Amateur Radio Operator (for insiders: callsign is PA8KM, and I’m interested in VHF and UHF, DXing, and contesting, but I’m not very active at the moment).

Furthermore, I am very much involved in nature. I like to be outside and ejoy the landscape and plants and birds and all other creatures.

Any last words?
I am honoured to be elected a POTW and want to thank everyone that nominated me!

HtV also included some socials, so cap away!

Post from the Prez

Howdy everyone! I want to take a minute to let you know about a few things in the works here at MHQ. We are excited about July and the things ahead in the next few months.

First, a heartfelt thanks to those of you who joined us in Denver for our birthday celebration. Geowoodstock and the surrounding events were amazing. It was great to see over 2000 like-minded people enjoy geo-games in the same place. Those in attendance were the first to earn the “Shindig” badge for 150+ attendees at a single event. I made some great memories with old friends and new. I witnessed a beautiful sunrise at Red Rocks and played frisbee while enjoying a sunset at Clement Park. In between, I walked countless miles and loved seeing the countless smiles on the faces of each player I interacted with. So again, thank you for joining us.

Next, the team is very excited about the number of birthday party events going on around the world during this month. July is important to us because it is the month we celebrate our birthday, and this year WE ARE FIVE! We wish we could attend every event, but it’s just not possible so we’ve sent Flat Rob instead. Please check the calendar for events near you! *Behind the scenes info: the calendar is currently getting a makeover and we know you are going to love it!

Additionally, this year we are working hard to build the Munzee community globally. We are using resources to spread the word about Munzee and see that you are clearly doing the same. Throughout this process we continue to improve communication with brand new players. If you notice any in your area we encourage you to reach out to them via messenger and offer support as needed. This will encourage them to join you and grow the map!

Finally, as part of our community building we are also working hard to refresh the game. We may be five, but sadly some of our early players are no longer active. In June we activated the “recycle” icon, with much great feedback about how it helped your local area. While this won’t remain a permanent fixture you can rest assured this wasn’t the only time you will see this icon. In that line, we are also introducing two new titles into the game. Players who have not captured or deployed in the last 180 days will be given a “dormant” title. Players who have not captured or deployed in the last 365 days will be given an “inactive” title. These titles will be checked and updated daily, so a player can remove the title by simply capping or deploying again. While a player account has either of these titles it will change several rules for their account. The first being a faster archival process for physical munzees they have deployed. If a physical munzee owned by one of these accounts has TWO “Needs Repair” or “Unable to Locate” journal entries added it will automatically archive the Munzee. This is only step one in our efforts to refresh the map based on older “inactive” accounts. We will always leave the account open for players to return, but want to keep things fresh for new players. Stay tuned for more info on the next step soon.

As always, we truly appreciate each of you and know our community is what makes Munzee what it is. We are the 21st Century Scavenger Hunt only because you play and you spread your love for the game. Keep doing what you do to build the community, and we will do our very best to give you every tool you need to keep it fresh and fun! See you down the road!
